[Finale] Dorico and Sibelius

2019-01-26 Thread Howey, Henry
I have both. They make files that are just files. It’s a strength to some, to
me a deal breaker.

Finale means that once the notes are entered, I can use them in a variety of
ways.

[Finale] The Dorico thread

2018-07-14 Thread Howey, Henry
I paid for Dorico the day it came out. It was alphawate, at best.

Dorico 2 is betaware. If you follow it on Facebook you’ll see many concerns
expressed.

As for SmartMusic, I must say that it’s PC/MAC version will not work with 25. I
had to move back to 2012 to have a fully functioning file for juries. We have
students sightread while accompanied. The iPad version is where all the effort
is today.

We are at a watershed moment in notation. The demands of a wide audience cannot
be met in one app. To me, flexibility is the key. Any app that can handle a
wide audience cannot help but be complex.

I work on both Mac and PC.

And my files ain't small.

On a Mac with 25, a file that played easily would not start. I had an error

Anyhow, the solution turned out to be increasing the RAM access in the ARIA

I bought it. It's certainly raw. And they are not interested in making the

[Finale] Weird transposing bug in Finale 25

2016-10-05 Thread Howey, Henry
One of Finale's most useful tools has been the power to transpose keys while
maintaining relationships, particular when modes are involved.

I just took a scale study and set up a master. Both bass and treble clefs were
involved. While the treble minor section transposed correctly, the bass clef
section ignored the minor section altogether and left the notes on the staff
unmoved.

This is a stupid bug and must be fixed immediately.

[Finale] Windows Enterprise setup of Finale 25

2016-09-25 Thread Howey, Henry
The problem's solution lay in the way a server-based system works. And Finale
seems to need special attention in this case. The problem was that ROAMING
APPDATA is on an external drive and is reloaded to the user's account on each
re-boot.

The solution was to change the settings on the server and re-start. The changes
will only become permanent in this matter. I must thank a help source at MM for

[Finale] Any ideas?

2015-09-05 Thread Howey, Henry
An Italian colleague has written asking about

http://music-encoding.org/

While this decades-old project uses its own XML and has a Sibelius plug-in, I
was wondering if any Finale list members knew of this project and the
possibility of a Finale plug-in as my colleague works exclusively in Finale.

For Michael Good, I was wondering if it might be easier to have an app that
would cross-code MusicXML with this group's format.

I've been privileged to observe the development of MusicXML for more than a
decade.

It seems that an outreach from the Finale users might be a good idea.

BTW, I have found Sibelius' MusicXML capabilities limited, so I wonder at the
efficacy of the music-encoding plug-in.

Macintosh)

Hello,

this is just a quick note that finally, TGTools have been updated to work with
the latest Finale versions. You will find version 2.71 on our web site, as a
free update if you have an older v2 license. The TGTools features should
basically all work, although some may no longer apply to recent Finale versions.

I am also planning a more dedicated upgrade to use the latest data structures
and add some features. This will be TGTools 3.0 and it is planned as a payed
upgrade.

Kind Regards,

[Finale] Scanning

2014-01-26 Thread Howey, Henry
The only scanning software worth using is SHARPEYE.

As long as the original is sharp, a 300-600 dpi TIFF or BMP will be over 90%
useful.

An added benefit is that with the proper clefs, transposed scores can be read
as well.

And it works on MAC in CROSSOVER though a few tricks are necessary.

[Finale] HP messing up playback

2013-11-27 Thread Howey, Henry
One of my techniques to update the 19th-century instrumentation to a standard
modern band has been to add the updated instruments via the Score Manger and
copy and paste, eventually removing the older instruments.

All of a sudden, weird tempo changes have sprung up emanating from HP. When HP
is deactivated, the tempos are fine. Sadly, ornaments and articulations also
vanish.

Has anyone a solution.

[Finale] Is FINALE worth continuing?

2012-04-15 Thread Howey, Henry
I started this list a long time ago.

After dealing with MAC and PC 2012 I now wonder if FINALE is ready to be
ditched.

1. The MAC interface sucks. The PC is better. Why has it not been updated for
15+ years?

2. SIBELIUS now has 64-bit access. FINALE gave us score mismanagement.

3. FINALE bought GARRITAN and MusicXML. Now support for either of these SUCKS!

4. When they were in an acquisitive mood, why not TGTOOLS?

5. SIBELIUS knows it's on the same computer as before when I update hardware.
Why doesn't FINALE?

6. We are being used as beta testers without benefits. Pay up, MM!

IMSLP.org found nothing but F horn, so I'm not sure what the early writing

were F horn only. Not Dvorak - he wrote in keys just as Brahms, [Dvorak
 6th = Horn 1, 2 (in D, F, E), 3, 4 (in E, Bb, D)]  if more chromatically.

I was curious about J. Strauss Jr., since he might have been more in the
public trenches - my friend didn't mention him but all the parts on IMSLP
(not that many) are F horn. Perhaps the waltz king gets the award for
helping establish the principle of writing for the F horn specifically, and
going against the (written later) advice of Richard Strauss? (Perhaps more
than ten minutes of research would be needed for this conclusion?)

 Raymond Horton

Ray - I'm really interested to see what your hornist friend has to share!

Actually, Brahms DID prefer natural horn, and DID hear his works played on
valveless horns - repeatedly. Robert Pascall, (Vice-Chair of the New
Complete Brahms Edition) writes, Brahms preferred the old valveless horn,
and could mark notes to be played stopped in case players were tempted to
take the easier way. And there's a wealth of performance history in
Brahms' presence to verify not only his preference but experience.

I think I may have mentioned here in the past Brahms' preference for smaller
rather than larger orchestras; on the large-end of performance practice about
which we know some details, the Vienna Phil (Brahms' 'hometown' orch) had 78
musicians in 1864, 100 by 1885 - and played each of Brahms' symphonies at
least four times during his lifetime. Brahms himself conducted a festival
performance of the second in Hamburg in 1878 with an orchestra of 113 but his
PREFERRED orchestral sound was a smaller one in which the winds wouldn't be
overwhelmed by the strings nor forced into doubling. A smaller group in
which the sound of his beloved natural horn

[Finale] ASIO-capable external USB sound card for laptop

2010-08-25 Thread Howey, Henry
Has anyone a suggestion for this? There are several out there, but reviews seem
mixed, and the authors at Amazon, etc. are suspicious.

My laptop has Realtek drivers, but asio4all causes bluescreens of extreme
severity.

Also, my laptop is 64-bit, and Finale/ARIA must work in 32-bit.I have had 32/64
issues otherwise.

I need an ASIO driver that will ignore the Realtek altogether. I found one, but
its associated hardware is very backward-looking.

Portability is important to me. Also, I only need to make great WAVs with GPO
and Finale.

[Finale] AUDIVERIS announcement

2010-06-12 Thread Howey, Henry
Bonjour,

I am pleased to let you know that Audiveris version 3.3 has just been released
on the Kenai server.
Among its new features:
- The ability to inject entities directly into the score structure, thanks to a
drag drop from a dedicated shape palette.
- The OCR features of Google Tesseract available under both Windows and Linux
environments.
See further details in release notes.

Latest Audiveris builds are also automically applied on numerous examples from
the Petrucci Music library.
Get more information on Audiveris home page and access all project components,
including software distribution, on Kenai server.

Regards
/Hervé

P.S. Please note that Oracle has announced that Java.net server should be
re-implemented on Kenai infrastructure, so one day every piece of Audiveris
should be back on Java.net. For the time being, the users mailing list
(mailto:us...@audiveris.dev.java.net) stays on Java.net side, whereas the
project management is now handled on Kenai side.

RE: [Finale] Dissertation work

2010-04-01 Thread Howey, Henry
Hey David!

The actual size refers to making the image as close to the intended result as
possible. This can be done by sizing the document or doing a selection that
is near the final size;-)

Also, I forgot to mention that WORD treats PS objects as TEXT. Thus center,
left or right justification from the text control can be used.

Well, PostScript (EPS or PS) works fine if you have a PostScript
printer for output, but most Windows users do not, so it's not
helpful to recommend that.

You *are* correct, though, that EPS/PS graphics make dpi irrelevant,
as they scale to whatever output dpi you choose, depending on the
output device.

But for non-scalable graphics, dpi *does* matter. 150dpi is fine for
onscreen display, but is terrible for printing. 300dpi is the lowest
satisfactory dpi for graphics, I'd say, but for things like music, I
don't think it's high enough (you'll get jaggies on beams, for
instance, and if you resize in your target program, you may lose
staff lines; that's dependent on the resizing algorithm used by the
program you've inserted the graphic into, though; MS Word is actually
extremely good with that).

Try to size close to actual size. Also, breal multi-line images into
 smaller pieces for good pageflow.

Actual size? What does that mean on a computer screen?
