Re: [Finale] Triplets in speedy entry

2018-05-10 Thread Scott Jones
For each beat you restart with Ctrl-3. I wish there were a quicker way like
Sibelius does where you can set up a bracket and hit the R (repeat) key and it
will continue to create triplets as long as you want them.

Re: [Finale] Problems Printing 11 x 17

2017-06-18 Thread Scott Jones
Make sure your printer setup is pointing to tabloid(11x17) size paper.
Whenever I am printing to that size I have to tell the printer in page setup to
also be set to 11x17 as well as telling finale to print to that size. I print
using an HP laserjet 5000.

Try the marching percussion sounds and go with a snare rim knock. There might
be a sound where you tap the side of the drum too. Not sure if the free lite

 Hi Ryan,

I asked the same question a little while ago – no one who saw the request
at the time answered with exception of Gippo Mercoli who wrote:

In finale, with Garritan or midi I can't imagine other way: open a drum
track and process a single tom or bass drum shot.

If anyone who didn't see the question then or has had time to think about
has a better suggestion, please describe! I tried this suggestion above –
 unsatisfactory.

Also, if anyone has *good* suggestions for virtual instruments other than
the bundled Garritan for guitar, I'd be into hearing about that – the
Garritan sounds aren't good enough for a client. Thanks!

but not on the parts, however it appears that Finale is showing the staff
 line
in the score and the individual part as one unit rather than score and
separate part. So what I do to the staff in either the score or the part is
 carried through both.

Is there a way to set the staff names for the score and not have it carried
over to the parts? I am currently receiving the digest version of Finale
 list.

 Thanks so much.

Re: [Finale] 2014 crashes

2014-04-15 Thread Scott Jones
These recent threads make me wonder who/what type of people are really on the
beta bug testers list for Finale. It seems that we have some really huge power
users here that discover bugs fairly frequently based on the workloads that
they are involved with. That being said are the beta testers (not withstanding
our own Jari W.) really deep finale users(i.e. publishing houses) or just
people who dabble in specific areas that do not need full use of the program.

Just thoughts out loud.

Re: [Finale] Typing around text insert

2014-03-01 Thread Scott Jones
I’ve got a question since we are talking about the text tool. Why is it that
when you insert text in the Launcher window say for COPYRIGHT and you know you
are going to edit it to have line one BOLD and line 3 in italics that when you
have the score set up and go to EDIT the text box you might as well NOT have
entered it into the launcher window because you cannot format any of the
inputted text like you want without having to type it all over again to get the
formatting you want. Any attempt to edit the controlled input text from the
launcher window applies to the entire selection. I like that we can edit typos
within the controlled text but still cannot alter it individually by word or
line. Oh, and any form of copy/paste of the controlled text after the original
text remains in the controlled form.

Re: [Finale] Anybody having any success with scanning?

2014-01-22 Thread Scott Jones
After watching Tom Johnson of Finale scan in clinics with relative ease I have
gone back to scanning. He tells us that certain scanners are better than others
for scanning and that a dpi of 500 or better will achieve optimal results. 300
dpi is pretty awful in scanning music even though we were all told that long
ago it was acceptable. I watched Tom scan in a random band score at the Midwest
clinic in Dec. and it produced every note that was on the page correctly as
seen using the free version of smartscore lite. Yes there were no text on the
scanned page but he also added that instead of taking the scanned page and
turning it into your finished doc you should copy the info from it and paste
into a new doc set up how you want the final score to look like.

SharpEye). The last time I used any of them was about 7 years ago. Of
the 3, I could sometimes get marginal results with SharpEye, but usually
there were so many errors that it was not worth the time to even try.

I need to transpose a big band chart for my singer. As this is very
clean music, very well engraved, I thought this might be a good time to
see how that software has progressed. I was encouraged when I saw that
both Smartscore and Photoscore are proudly claiming that they now work
even with hand-written scores. Perfect. Then it should have no trouble
at all with my engraved music that uses the jazz font.

Well, I think you know how this story turned out. I tried the latest
versions of all three programs, using a wide variety of scan settings.
They all failed miserably. The best one was Smartscore, which at least
recognized the key signatures and most of the notes, but it still had at
least one error on every single measure -- and this is not complicated
music. It missed slurs, ties, multi-measure rests, endings, repeats,
etc and interpreted dynamics and text as notes.

Photoscore works best when I scan at 300dpi and grayscale. What
 settings did you scan at?

I've never tried it on any handwritten font nor on my manuscript.

It often has problems with multi-measure rests but most of the mistakes
are easy to fix in PhotoScore before importing into Sibelius.

I haven't worked with SmartScore so I can't offer any insights into that
but perhaps re-scanning at 300dpi/grayscale if you haven't used those
 settings might help.

Good luck -- keep us posted as to what sort of results the SmartScore

Re: [Finale] print forces update layout??

Insert the time signature as 6/2 + 3/1 and then go into the time
signature settings in doc options and change the + to a blank
character in the font and you will see the time as you want it. I've
done this very same thing for Bernstein's Overture to WSS 4/4 + 2/4
stuff. You have to set the measures after the initial to the correct
time signatures and hide them but otherwise you get the desired look
you are wanting. You will have to add the Parenthesis yourself.

No, it won't. Or if it does, the kludge is no kludge at all, and

Hmm, maybe it's not update layout then. Let me be more specific.

I've got a piece with a lot of time signature changes and one of
them has a parenthetic; that is, it changes to 6/2 but right after
the 6/2 it shows 3/1 in parentheses. I know of no way to draw that
in the regular time signature, so I've just done it as regular 6/2
and I've created an expression to show the (3/1). I then respace to
create extra room after the time signature to fit my expression in.

So far, so good, except that this time signature change happens to
fall on a system break, which I can't avoid. Therefore I need the
parenthesized time signature to appear at the end of the prior
system as well. Now it's a problem because that space isn't part of
any measure. Finale just ends the previous measure early with only
just enough room for the time signature to fit after the barline.

Therefore I trick Finale into ending the measure early: I add space
to the previous measure, update the layout, and then remove the
extra space without updating the layout. This works perfectly on
the screen, and I thought it would work perfectly over all, but I
find that as soon as I print, Finale sees through my stratagem and
moves the barline to the right anyway, pushing my parenthesized
expression out into the right margin.

There are more elaborate kludges I could resort to, but they are
problematic, in part because my client cares about the MusicXML
code, not just the printed look, so it's an issue to do things like
add an invisible measure.

If anyone has a better idea, I'd love to hear it. The basic problem
is that I need to created space after the rightmost barline in a
system that is showing time signature at the end of the system.

Is there somewhere I can define the time signature numeral
characters? If I can blank out the plus and some digits I may be
able to fake something with a composite time signature.

There is a work around. Check the backlog of messages or go to the MM

Re: [Finale] OT: field drum notation / scores

2008-08-18 Thread Scott Jones
I currently teach drum corps and believe that ALL of the DCI corps are
on modern Bb/F horns. Their cohorts in the DCA (senior corps) world
are still split between G bugles and modern Bb horns. As for the
original comment regarding Cymbals, Marching cymbal lines are
typically the first to be cut out of the marching ensemble for visual
reasons and relegated to the pit ensemble on the sidelines whenever
another caption wants to increase their groups size on the field. I
personally think a full Cymbal line (4-5 members) is quite musically
enhancing to the overall group and is super visual as well within the
marching unit on the field if taught well and used correctly.

While that gets the beaming right, it displays time sig of 3+3/8 +

This just ridiculous.

You don't have to change the file extension unless you want

Just use FILE | OPEN in Finale, and change the FILES OF TYPE dropdown

There's nothing problematic about the way Windows works here -- it's

Maurice Jarre or the film production company likely own the

To the collective wisdom,

I had a question from a student who is working on a student film. She
wants to synchronise video playback (I think she has QuickTIme files)
with Finale's playback, so that she can compose directly to image
as if

she was using a sequencer. I don't know if this is possible in Finale
at all. I thought maybe embedding a start MIDI message in the
Finale
file that would be heard by the app playing back the video might
work,

but I don't know what apps might hear this message properly.

Any ideas?

Christopher

I'm afraid that softwares able to do that are sequencers like Cubase,
Nuendo, Cakewalk Sonar and so on.
They can sync a MIDI or audio file to video files to start together
or at a

certain given moment.

Make sure you have already set up your 2nd ending, then option

I can create this one no problem, but I actually want this more

if you don't have WingDings3 (or even if you do in my case!) then
you see a down arrow instead of a curved right arrow. This is what

supposed to handle these things. The character I am looking at is
in the Unicode Table row F0C0 and column A, and I can only find it
in Wingdings 3 Regular.

So far, the only program I have been able to see it correctly in
(aside from Character Palette) is AppleWorks, and I can create a
PDF from it, but I can't get it imported in any way into Finale
that I can work out. Apparently the character will only show up in
Unicode-compliant programs, and Finale is not one of them. I would
be happy to import it as a graphic, but I can't create a graphic
that will import into Finale from AppleWorks. I can only create a
PDF, or a very low-resolution TIFF or JPEG, which are too jaggy to
use. There is no way I can find to increase the resolution of the
TIFF beyond 72 DPI.

Does anybody have any strategies?

Upon D/L of the windows demo there is a font called GCRevere that gets installed. That seems to be the font that everyone is interested in. Many of the characters are very nice looking but it will take tons of tweaking to ever use it in Finale. I just finished playing around with it myself in an old document I opened up. Seems they do not offer anything more than eighth note values (notes and rests) in the font. Anything bigger is a creation of those values added to each other (i.e. multiple 1/8 rests to create 16th, 32nd rests). The same goes for flags.
