[Finale] Copy errors

2009-04-24 Thread Stig Christensen

Hi,

Every time I copy a section of music, that contains chords I get a
message saying:

The Font is not available in this piece.
Select another font or...
Add to Finales font list?

Cancel . Add. Select

How can I avoid this? I use the same template for a great deal of
work, so I would hate to have to start all over again with a new
document!

Re: [Finale] Page numbers in linked parts

2008-11-15 Thread Stig Christensen
You could leave the whole page numbering business to the PDF creation
proces.
I do it all the time, and I always have multiple documents because I
work a lot with musicals and stuff like that.

So simply produce the PDF's and open e.g. all flute parts in acrobat
professional and do the page numbering here.

You could create a separate page number field for each part,
showing just that one and hiding all the others -- but that's
probably more trouble than it's worth and I suspect you are
better off extracting.

In future, it is almost always best to use a single score file for
multimovement works, instead of splitting the work into one file
per movement.

Thankyou for your response - the reason for splitting multimovement
works into one file per movement is mainly, in the case of rather
long pieces, the exceeding dimension of the waw file to be
extracted from just one file for the whole work.

Hi Stig-

The guitarist should play the melody in its notated rhythm, but
letting each note continue sounding past its notated length. It's
identical to engaging the sustain pedal on a piano and then playing
a melody- all the notes override each other until the pedal is
released, dampening the strings.

Usually one will find a sign that looks similar to a coda sign (an
oval with crosshairs) at the end of such passages, and that means
the player should resume playing with normal technique.

LV comes from the French, laissez vibrez. The technique is
impossible to achieve on guitar for consecutive notes played on a
single string, obviously, so the player has to distribute successive
notes among other strings to achieve the effect.

As Terry said, the fingers must be left in position on the strings
after each note is played. When the number of strings or fingers
runs out to keep that practice sustained over the course of the
melody or indication it's logical (to me), knowing the intended
effect, that the first note played would be the first dropped to
play the next one before any other notes were dropped.

-Cecil RIgby

I believe the intention of L.V. is to leave the left hand fingers
 in position

How come the play back is so horrible in Finale.
The volume is lovered and the pan suddenly goes bananas!
You can't use that for anything!

And what happended to Bookmarks, that function doesn't work anymore.

I also cpoied a complete piano part to a newly created score, and
suddenly the new part was filled with voice 2 rests! Then have to
convert voice 2 to layer 4 select Display Active Layer only and delete
layer 4!

So many anoying bugs.

I allready have Sibelius, so that will not be a problem.
I don't expect a full featured seq. I use Logic for that, but beeing
able to proove listen is very usefull, but almost impossible in
Finale.

The pan-bug has been there for too long now!
The bookmark feature is not the most elegant construction, but I have
used it sometime, but yesterday it just wasn't there.
I made a bookmark called Verse 4. But after a while, when I was trying
to return to my bookmark, the bookmark menu was grayed out, and there
was no sign of the Verse 4 bookmark!

I think writing drumnotes takes ages!
The switching beetwen 2 layers - deleting all the extra rests and so
on, there must be an easier way to do it!

Maybe I will try Sibelius again!

Sibelius has its own problems, not too surprisingly, and playback is
one of them if you expect EITHER program to be a full-featured
sequencer when they are both notation programs.

The difference, as many have testified, is that the present Sibelius
management seems to be dedicated to fixing problems that are brought
to their attention, unlike the present MakeMusic management, which
is not. (I believe that Sibelius still has a generous cross-program
upgrade offer on the table until the end of the month, but I may be
off by a month.)

Hi Allen,

Youre right if the document is fresh, it's working, but not if the

I think the step from 2008 to 2009 has been a bit time consuming. I

Re: [Finale] Song Book recommendations

2007-07-29 Thread Stig Christensen
If You want to place several text lines (verses) under the same staff
(melody line) you have to put the text for each verse in it's own
verse (in the lyrics edit window), otherwise all the textlines will
be placed in the same position.

So conclusion is text belonging to the same verse will always (at
least in scroll edit) be written in on the same line.

I plan to combine all the songs into a single Finale file, unless I
hear it is a really bad idea.

1. Should I create a separate verse for the text of each song, or
should I place all the text in one verse? If they are separate,
won't I end up fiddling with base lines a great deal?

2. What is this hyphenation bug and word extension bug I keep
reading about here?

3. Is there some way (plugin or program) to recreate all the
correct hyphenations and extensions if they get messed up?

I know that my Mass Copy plugin does not work with hyphenation and
word extensions. I am working to rectify that as best as possible.
If there is an easy way to repair them, that will make my life easier.

[Finale] Chord Font missing

2007-04-16 Thread Stig Christensen

Hi,

I like to use Applegothic for my chord symbol, and I save this

uniform the layout with the other documents in the musical I work
on, the chords appears with the wrong characterset.

So my Q. is why will Finale 2007 Mac not remember this particular

I agree that loading libraries sometimes gives unexpected results.
The best way I know of to import a smart line is to copy a measure
containing one from another document, then clear that measure in

Is it possible that you are not using an American keyboard layout?
I have my Mac set to use an American layout for Finale, and a

But in any case, if you have a full keyboard (not a laptop layout)
then the Delete key that is above the arrow keys, between the alpha

But be careful, as it doesn't clear everything, like Measure
Expressions. Even the menu item Clear Items... you can set it to
clear Measure Attributes, for example, and it won't change the
Break Multimeasure Rests settings in the selected measures. This
has caught me several times.

In the Chord Menu, Enable Chord Playback, uncheck it. This turns
off chord playback for the entire piece in all staves.

You can do the same thing staff by staff from the Instrument List,

Re: [Finale] Need notation advice for a composition for large concertband!

2005-04-04 Thread Stig Christensen
Wouldn't you normally write 1. Or 2. For 1.st / 2nd flute and a2 if you -
after a solosection - want both musicians to play?

I think this is the standard inplemented in TGTools!

so that share the same stem

I have a feeling I am somewhat misunderstanding this, but if two is
sharing the stem, how can you tell if the note is not solo?

And I think it would be a good feature request if Finale can display/
print in a manner of imploding from multiple staff. I usually create
parts then explode. They usually share similar page layout.

[Finale] sustained chords

2005-02-07 Thread Stig Christensen
Hey,
I would like your advise how to write broken chords, as often used in
the romantic piano litteratur. an example:

If the composer wants the pianist to play a C major triad with the C on
beat 1, the E on beat 2 and the G on beat 3. All 3 notes should be
sustained to form a C major triad on the 4'th beat.

This involves (in Finale) the use of ties or slurs, and works very
well( well not that smart with the special tool and extending the
lenght of each tie), but when it comes to ties/slurs over a staff break
it all becomes a little difficult.

I would very much appreciate your opinion and suggestions!!

If you cut and paste measures with the smart shape in it, individual
line definitions will be copied.

Settings Transfer in Forza! Lite can copy all your custom smart shape
line definitions to other documents, while avoiding to create
duplicates. (Select the Lists mode and check Custom-Line Smart

Re: [Finale] Measure number zero

2004-12-01 Thread Stig Christensen
I know in my world, which is show-business, I have never seen bar
number 0. Neither in classical music. I also think that a drummer
playing from bar 0 to bar 7 in a jazz standard repertoire would be very
surprised to find a section to begin on bar 8 and not on bar 9!

Sorry I can't offer you better help! :-(
David
The basic problem here seems to be a client who thinks it's logical
to have a measure zero. It's no more logical than to have a page
zero in a book, or a year zero in our calendar. The human mind
doesn't work that way. Looks like anything you do to satify her will
have to be a kludge.

John
In film music this happens quite often and Dan is right. It has to be
the exact same way in all of the parts as it is in the score just as
the composer has it. Time is so precious on a scoring stage and
overtime is a bad thing...very expensive. So the fewer questions
there are, the faster things go. Even something perceived as trivial
as this by some can hang a session up. All the conductor would have
to say is 4 Free (clix) to bar zero (or perhaps 3 Free for example
if the zero bar is a pickup bar) and if there is no bar zero...well,
then trying to tell 80 plus people what it should be

Click tracks are generated in different ways by different composers
too so whatever works for them is what is used...this translates to
the page in different ways.

Copying for Film music is a different animal than traditional
engraving. Things aren't always done in a traditional way...sometimes
it's more utilitarian. It has to be on the page in a very clear way,
has to be accurate. These amazing session players are sight reading
everything too. I still get blown away by them. So whatever the
copyists can do to make it easy for the players to read, with as
little confusion as possible, is what is best even if a few
traditional engraving rules are broken from time to time. And if it
makes sense to the composer and music editor...that is what is done
:-)

I think I ran into this once, too, but I'm not sure that it's Finale
that's going bananas, but perhaps the OS. I suspect that Finale is
using the rules that governed in the earliest days of the software,
when DOS filenames could consist of only normal letters, digits, and
a handful of special characters, of which $, , and _ werre three.
Sophisticated users knew how to get other characters into filenames,
but the filenames could not then be accessed by other people.
