I'm happy to help.

I think it's a horrible thing for software companies to do that -- tell
us there's an upgrade to our current version available when actually
they want us to buy a completely new version. I've got another piece of
software which keeps telling me the same thing, only it says "Important
update for your current version." No, it's not an update of the current
version, it's a brand new version which will cost me money to get. Sleazy!

It's telling that "the new version is 2014.5 2500.0.0.7722" -- that
tells me that even the folks at rocky-mountain-high-exercise-company (or
whatever the name of the current owner of Finale is) consider this new
version to be simply an extension of 2014.5 and not the totally new
version they advertised it as.

Why can't software companies be more honest with their users?

[Finale] 2014.5 Playback - again!

2016-12-03 Thread Michael Lawlor
This is a problem I encountered with earlier versions of Finale.
Suddenly, one instrument's volume drops so it cannot be heard (very
faint if playing solo) but then a few bars later, it plays at the
correct volume again. I never got a solution before but worked around
it by deleting the affected bars and re-entering the music.

This time, I re-entered the music and it played back correctly, so I
deleted the bars with the problem but now the re-entered music has
inherited the same problem. It is as if there is a virtual area and
whatever lies over it gets affected. Has anyone else encountered this
and managed to fix it?

Re: [Finale] Getting JABB and GPO to work in Finale 2014.5 Mac + ARIA

2016-05-04 Thread Darcy James Argue
So, eventually, after tediously trying multiple installs, I finally managed to
manually locate and remove all Garritan and Plogue files from my computer. I
had had already tried Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Application
Support, and ~/Library/Preferences, but it turns out there are also files in
Library/Audio that need to be removed to get a clean reinstall. (ARIA really
needs to come with an uninstaller.)

I also had to remove all sample files.

After that, doing a complete reinstall in the following order worked:

GPO4
JABB3
Finale 2014.5 (Garritan Instruments and ARIA player)
ARIA Player v1.872

An absolute nightmare that took untold hours, but at least I’ve got the GPO and
JABB instruments back.

In future, it would be nice to know if there were a less brute-force method.

Cheers,

So after a complete reinstall of JABB (including reverting to Aria 1.091), the

Aria and Plogue items from Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Application

Hi all,

Can someone explain what the trick is to get the latest version of ARIA Player
to recognize GPO4 and JABB3?

I’ve followed the instructions here:

http://makemusic.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5381/~/setting-up-garritan-sound-libraries-in-finale-and-printmusic

The result is that instrument libraries show up as options in Finale 2014.5,
but the instrument samples don’t load.

I’ve also tried directing ARIA (latest version) to my Applications folder,
which contains the “Garritan Jazz and Big Band 3” and “Garritan Personal
Orchestra 4” folders. These libraries then show up as “User” libraries in the
ARIA player but the samples still don’t load.

Has anyone gotten this to work?

Hi Darcy,

I'm in NY and away from Finale, but I have not had anything like this problem.
And a Finale support guy told me how to set up the score manager so that JABB
can be selected directly there, circumventing going into the Aria player most
of the time. I know this may not be much help, but I don't know why this
problem is occurring.

Are the support guys no help?

enhances the look of any score. The Notes,
Articulations and Pitches fonts can also add a
modern touch of elegance to your Classical music
score.

Character charts and examples using neueweise fonts can be found on this page:
http://newmusicnotation.com/fonts.html

The Fonts

Notes -- Noteheads common to New Music, as well
as rests, and straight and angled flags.

Articulations -- A range of articulations, bow
markings, fermati, tremolos with 1-5 bars,
fingernail, guitar pick, slap tongue, Bartók
pizz. and more.

Pitches -- Standard accidentals and quarter tones
(flats and sharps), as well as inflected versions
(arrows up/down) and smaller versions with
brackets; also round and square brackets for use
with notes and accidentals.

Use and Design

Although neueweise fonts were designed
specifically for New Music, they work perfectly
for traditional notation as well. Some notable
features of the font set:

- Accidentals contains quarter tones and
inflected (arrow up/down) quarter tones;
- Inflected accidentals are legible even in reduced size scores;
- Narrower width of some characters saves
horizontal "real estate" in the score;
- Unified width of many noteheads ensures
consistent appearance using alternate noteheads;
- A bold and stylish design will make your work
stand out, musicians love your scores.

Finale Users

Font Annotation files (FANs) are included for
each font. A stem connection library is included
with Notes; an articulation library is included
with Articulations.

Hello list,

I'm looking for a detailed list of new features/bug fixes for finale

Can anyone point me to a detailed list of relevant features for this

I did a project in it that I had started in 2014 and didn't have any problems

[Finale] Finale 2014.5 and Garritan

2015-12-05 Thread David Froom SMCM
I recently upgraded to 2014.5 (Mac). I have the full Garritan, but
occasionally use the Finale version for the non-orchestral instruments
included. After the upgrade, the full Garritan is fine, but the others have
disappeared, except, oddly, a single instrument (viola). This is so, now for
both versions (2014 and 2014.5). Clearly the instrument location has changed,
and Finale doesn't know to where.

Does anyone have a suggestion of what I should do to fix this?

Thanks,

I notice the Finale-employees who are members of this list are

Definitely troubling that such things weren't discovered in beta testing

In older OS X I use to solve such problems playing finale through midi (or voce

Very true!

There's a very good book by the late Andrew Stiller, long a mainstay of
this group, called "Handbook of Instrumentation." It's available
through Nick Carter Imaging:
http://www.npcimaging.com/software/frameset2.htm

I've found it to be a very accurate guide to ranges, techniques,
potential problems, etc. Far better than asking humans whose egos may
get the better of them.

It's available as a paper book, on CD-rom or in a combined package.

Thanks to all for the information about the tuba trill. In the work that I'm
copying out (one of mine what just needs a dynamics overhaul) this
unaccompanied trill introduces (I won't say modulates to) a new key. When
the piece was read years ago I didn't get any feedback on this trill. The
only problems that I did hear about (which I have subsequently fixed)
brought on a life lesson that you don't use trumpet range advice from
Maynard Ferguson wannabes.

Thanks again!

Tuba trills: f# to g# in the staff would be fingered:
2/3 to 1 on a BBb. A bit awkward.Alternate fingering would be quite out of

2 to 2/3 on a CC Tuba. Easy.
2 to 1 on an Eb tuba. Easy. Sorry, but other poster was not correct.
1/2 to 2 on an F tuba. Easy.
I have avoided any options of 5th or 6th valves, as the setups are quite
varied.

You are correct. The setting was "automatic" Evidently the handling
for "automatic" changed. I set it to "chromatic" and it plans as
before, which is preferable in this case. Thanks for that tip.

One of the bug fixes involved the criss-crossed use of two different
MIDI controllers (I think these affected volume and not pitch), so it
seems they were in that area of code at least to some extent.

I would agree. I have not tested this personally and am relying on a
(reliable) user who posted at the Finale forum.

The reality here is that this is essentially a new company and mostly a
new set of developers inheriting a huge and quite complex code base.
Having done that a few times in my career, I can tell you this is really
scary. Coincidentally, Sibelius was in exactly the same position. The
Sibelius people opted to not touch the main code and to put out a "7.5"
that was almost entirely cosmetic. It was a "statement of support" but
not real support.

The Finale people wanted to demonstrate something a little more
substantial, and took an extra 18 months for that.

I can't say which strategy was correct. The fact is that there are
still big bugs needing fixes and important improvements needed. At this
stage we have more evidence that the Finale people can make improvements
than we have from the Sibelius people. But if we are looking at another
18 months before the next set of bug fixes, that will be really
disappointing.

Re: [Finale] 2014.5

2015-11-18 Thread Robert Patterson
The symptoms you are describing are exactly those that would be the case if
you had the Fin12 version of Patterson Plugins installed in the 14.5 plugin
folder. Please double check. The 14.5 version comes in an archive called
"Fin14Mac.zip" or "Fin14Win.zip". The mac versions are roughly twice as big
as the Fin12 mac versions. Most of them are around 2.2M as opposed to the
Fin12 versions that are around 1M.

Have you checked the HP settings for portamento/chromatic gliss ?
Maybe they changed the default setting ? But I can't believe that you
open a file that was set to chromatic gliss now automatically becomes a
portamento. At least it should be easy to change in the HP settings
(HP->Glissandi/Bends->Type: Chromatic).

I haven't tested it myself yet. But if they didn't fix the long known
note-on/off bug that accidentally skips notes in playback, this would be
a pretty bad priority list for bug fixing: playback would still not be
working properly.

Re: [Finale] Superficial comment on Finale 2014.5

2015-11-18 Thread Craig Parmerlee
Yes, it is a mixed bag. So far, the biggest problem I have seen is that
it knocks out VST playback after doing an export to WAV. I have to
restart Finale to get sound going again.

They seemed to have done a few things affecting HP. For example I am
working on an arrangement where the flutes gliss an octave, so I notated
this with the straight line smartshape. In 2014, it plays distinct
notes in that run, which is how the flute will sound. In 2014.5, it is
a portamento. That's OK for this project. Anyway, my point is that
they did something in that area, but they didn't fix the main HP bugs
that have to do with note-on/off timing.

The good news is that the new team is able to make some changes that are
more than superficial without completely ruining the product, so they
should be in a position to fix more of the bugs.

[Finale] Finale 2014.5 quick first impression

2015-11-18 Thread Robert Patterson
I downloaded the official Fin14.5 for Mac, and I feel that a warning is in
order. If you don't have to upgrade to El Capitan, I would hold off.
There's a long-standing issue on Macs with modeless plugin dialogs that
causes the main dialog to lose focus. In just cursory trials with Fin14.5
this morning, it appears that the problem is now much worse and that any
dialog causes (or at least often causes) the main dialog to lose focus. You
can quite easily end up in a scenario where no window has focus. This may
not sound that bad to some, but it is probably a deal breaker for me, at
least during the heavy editing phase.

Another annoyance I am experiencing is that every time I open the program
it re-displays the simple palette and the playback controls. And it doesn't
remember my previous window position. If anyone knows a way to address
this, I'd appreciate it.

One of the nice things is that you can freely transition between Fin14d and
Fin14.5 while working on the same file.

[Finale] Finale 2014.5

2015-11-18 Thread Randolph Peters
First impressions of 2014.5 on a Mac (Yosemite)

1. Special Tools Window doesn’t remember my placement on another monitor,
although Main Tools, Smart Shapes and Playback Windows do.

2. Extra large tool size not remembered in preferences.

3. TGTools align dynamics and hairpins with the special keys does not work. (It
might have worked once, but no more!)

This last one is a deal breaker for me. I’m going back to 2014 until this is
fixed.

At least the files still open without a problem going back to 2014.

2015-11-18 Thread Robert Patterson
If you do go back to Fin14, it's worth remembering that you can fire up
Fin14.5 at any time and work on the same file without conversion. You may
want to consider doing this when you get to preparing linked parts. Fin14.5
has some crucial bug fixes in that area.

Re: [Finale] 2014.5

2015-11-17 Thread Chuck Israels
So far, so good.

Simple way to take care of FAN files and Plugins (Mac):

Go to root level Library/ApplicationSupport/MakeMusic/Finale 2014

Duplicate 2 folders and move them temporarily to the desktop - FAN Files and
Plugins.

Then move the duplicates into the App Support for 2014.5

Quit and restart Finale 2014.5 and both Font Annotation and Plugins will be in
the right place and work correctly. Easy.

One issue I have with preferences is that adjusting the manuscript color and
the background color causes an interaction. Adjust one, and it affects the
other. The manuscript color (I try for a nice ivory) is more important, so I
am stuck with the default gray background. Anyone else have a similar
experience or know a workaround. This particular color adjustment seems rather
finicky.

Patterson Plug-ins not showing for me. The folders show up, but empty. Are they
there for you?

The other quirk with it is that I can’t seem to resize the main tool palette
the way that I could before - in two columns but with lower tools hidden.

Aaron,

I usually use beat-attached dotted-slurs for that. You may find my Smart

offsets, since the beat-attached UI is not implements for dotted slurs.
(They work, but the UI is still the pre-Fin12 UI.) And you may find my Mass

I can't answer the question about log drums, but as far as tubas are
concerned, you have to think of the key of the instrument. Tubas come in BB
flat, CC, E flat and F [those are the most common keys.] The trill you
mention is a lip trill on the BB flat instrument, and on the others it
should be a fingered trill. On E flat it might be awkward as it has to be
played with F sharp in 2nd valve and G sharp using 3rd valve. Good luck!

Tuba trills: f# to g# in the staff would be fingered:
2/3 to 1 on a BBb. A bit awkward.Alternate fingering would be quite out of tune
2 to 2/3 on a CC Tuba. Easy.
2 to 1 on an Eb tuba. Easy. Sorry, but other poster was not correct.
1/2 to 2 on an F tuba. Easy.
I have avoided any options of 5th or 6th valves, as the setups are quite varied.

Re: [Finale] Superficial comment on Finale 2014.5

2015-11-17 Thread Dean Rosenthal
Hi,

The oddest first thing I found about Finale 2014.5 (before taking it for a
drive) is that after reading the list of fixes and improvements, there is
no indication anywhere on the pop-up menu as to how to download it!

After some confusion, you discover you have to click on "*learn more*" –
not a button that would say "*get it now*" or "*download now*". Although it
does say up top, "do you want to download?" – no telling how you might.

Finale, when you offer a new version, have a download button in the pop up
window or explain that you need to click "learn more" to get the new
version. It's a totally superficial criticism, but a valid one. This is not
a complaint, however, and I wish us all good luck with this one.

A lot longer than 30 seconds for me. If you do "check for updates" from
within Finale, then you get useful instructions, but none of that is in
the Readme or in the announcement email.

You won't find this in the downloads section like other patches. The
procedure is to log onto you account at the Finale site. By to "your
software" That will indicate Finale 2014 available for download. Even
though it says it is 2014, it is actually 2014.5.

I don’t understand how things like this get rolled out in 2015. We were
laughing about it when I was still working in tech back in 1992. Disconcerting.
Like a trumpet player who shows up without any valve oil.

I’m happy the update was released. While this version has introduced new bugs,
it did squash some others that directly affected me every time I worked on a
file.

A pretty mediocre performance, though.

Hopefully work will continue and they’ll do better next time.

cheers

Re: [Finale] Finale 2014.5 by end of November?

2015-11-13 Thread Mark Adler
Hi Craig,

2014.5 is on it's way soon and works well in El Capitan but I'm still not
going to publicly state a release date : )
My priority this last year has been to continue to update the codebase,
improve performance and bug fixes. All plug-ins have been updated and many
longstanding plug-in bugs have been addressed. FinaleScript got extra
attention and now works better than ever.

The posting I cited says it is shipping this month. If that is not correct,
you might want to update that.

Thanks,
Craig

[Finale] Finale 2014.5 by end of November?

2015-11-12 Thread Craig Parmerlee
This article

http://www.finalemusic.com/blog/finale-and-os-x-el-capitan-update/

says "it was our hope that Apple would resolve this incompatibility, but
if they didn’t we’d provide a solution in Finale 2014.5, a
free-of-charge update for owners of Finale 2014 scheduled for release by
the end of November."

Is there any further information on the contents?
