Fwd: [Fink-beginners] X code Tools 1.5

2004-08-12 Thread Steffen Lund Hokland
With regards, to X code Tools 1.5. Should I install X code 1.2 first? I
gave it up some time ago, because I couldn't get the 'segments' stuff
to work (basically i just don't know what it is beyond segments of a CD
image.).

Best regards,
Steffen

This is because you didn't install the gcc3.1.pkg. You should install
this and also the gcc2.95.pkg if you want to be able to compile all
Fink packages. Unfortunately, those bloody fools^H^H^H^H^H^H^H our
dear friends from Apple have done it again and hid some of the
important packages including these compiler versions and X11SDK.pkg in
a personalized installation option, unchecked by default. We should
probably be grateful that they didn't destroy the Java headers this
time.

Hi,

There's actually a quite nice GUI tool for this bundled with the
XTools. Tjeck out Filemerge.app in /Developor/Applications/Utilities/

Hope this helps,

Hello,

this question is a bit off topic, but because the directories

I want to automagically compare two directories dir1 and dir2 and
have a dir3 created which has the differing files and folders.

I guess that using tools like diff or hfspax this *should be easy*,
but I have not found a solution.

Would someone please help?

[Fink-beginners] RE: $PATH for Apple X11

2003-12-16 Thread Steffen Lund Hokland
Thanks to Alexander and Eric for the suggestions.

However the problem persists since:
open /sw/bin/pathsetup.command
will just open a new Terminal.app window and tell me that all is fine
(also when the command is issued in a X11 window).
Editing the .profile does not help, since for some reason X11 does not
load this file on startup. It does load .bashrc though, but
Terminal.app doesn't. I tried:
source .profile
in the .basrc file which *will* give me the /sw tree, still leaves out
all of Gerben Wierda's $PATH changes since they reside in /etc/profile.
Should I 'souce' this file as well?

Thanks for any help,
Steffen

Re: [Fink-beginners] RE: $PATH for Apple X11

2003-12-16 Thread Steffen Lund Hokland
Dear all,

Thanks Eric, Alexander and especially Martin for putting me straight :-)

On 16/12-2003, at 14.48, Martin Costabel wrote:

I think you should *not* try to play around with your shell startup
scripts (although it may be too late for this advice now). You should
start by trying to ask the right question. You keep comparing X11.app
and Terminal.app. This is comparing not apples and oranges but single
apples and whole orange trees.

or 2. Create a ~/.xinitrc file like in 1., but without the second
line. Forget about xterm and use Terminal.app windows instead. If you
export DISPLAY=:0 you can start any X11 program from the command line
in your Terminal.app window, and you have a much better environment
than in xterm. You can even start an xterm from the command line if
you need one, and it will inherit your PATH variable from your
Terminal.app environment.
I have removed the bogus ~/.bashrc file, and created a .xinitrc as
prescribed by Martin, containing the lines:
source /sw/bin/init.sh
exec quarz-wm
and have subsequently been able to launch X-apps from Terminal.app.
I've added the line
export DISPLAY=:0
to my ~/.profile, and it works great.

Thanks again,

Steffen

[Fink-beginners] $PATH for Apple X11

2003-12-15 Thread Steffen Lund Hokland
Hi, all

Sorry if this has been up before, but I couldn't find it in the
archives.

I can't run Fink binaries in Apples X11. Writing

kanwax:~ hokland$ echo $PATH
/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/Users/hokland:/usr/X11R6/bin
However in Terminal.app:
kanwax:~ hokland$ echo $PATH
/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/
local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current:/usr/X11R6/bin

I created a .bashrc file in ~ containing a line

source .profile

which then added the /sw part of the path to $PATH, however this
doesn't seem very elegant - and I don't know what effect this has on
Terminal.app. In any case, the GW-teTeX part of the path is still
absent.

To make a long story short:
Is there a way that I can make X11 read the same init-files as
Terminal.app does (pointing me to a relevant link, will be fine of
course :-) ).

Thanks in advance,
Steffen
