Max,

Because libgettext3 and gettext-dev conflict, the Fink dependency
engine has to be able to switch back and forth between them when
build other packages. A reliable version of this swapping code was
only recently finalized, and will be in fink 0.24.9. As soon as
that's in stable, libgettext3 can go to stable as well.

Thanks for the explanation, Dave! Makes sense.

I'd like to release 0.24.9 to unstable very soon. There's just one
other bug-fix going into 0.24.9, that should enable Essential
packages to be SplitOffs, and I'm waiting for cirdan to make sure
that works. Then it's just some testing and release. A couple weeks
after it's been in unstable, if there are no big problems, we'll
push it to stable.

OK. I guess I'll leave it as it is for a bit then, so far only one
person complained *cough*.

Gist of that is, in about two or three weeks I expect you'll see
libgettext3 in stable. If you'd like things to go faster, you can
help test :-)

Well, I am already running fink HEAD all the time. Anything in
particular I should watch out for? So far everything seems to work
build fine.

Cheers,
Max

[Fink-devel] Should I try and integrate a newer version of mutt in fink?

2005-08-06 Thread Clemence Magnien
Hello everyone,

about two months ago I was in a discussion with Daniel E. Macks
and Martin Costabel, the conclusion being that it might be
a good idea to try and integrate a newer version of mutt in fink.
Since then I have successfully compiled the most recent release.
I have contacted the maintainer about this problem, and got no
answer.

So I am willing to try and make a package myself, but I think that
it might not be such a good idea for the following reasons:
 - the functionality that I wanted in this newer version (caching
headers of messages when accessing an IMAP mailbox for a quicker
access to the mailbox) seems not to work anymore for me, and I
think I saw some weird behaviors of the sort message function
(but I have not been able to reproduce those so it might have
   been my imagination).
 - I'm basically incompetent. So, while I am willing to learn,
and think I might be able to produce a satisfying package, I
am afraid I will not be able to help anyone having problems
with it, so that it might wind up to be more work for the rest
   of you.

So, what is your advice? Should I try to do it or not?
I think the first point is not that important, since there are
probably tons of other new functionalities that work very well,
but I'm more concerned with the second.

If you do think I should try, I have another question: the version
I use is patched so that it does header caching for IMAP mailbox.
What should I do about this? Integrate the patch in the package,
or not integrate it, or make two versions, one with and one without
the patch? (with ssl and non-ssl versions of each...).

Best regards,
Clemence

[Fink-devel] Where is info2 format documented?

2005-08-06 Thread Kevin Horton
I'm working to update some packages I've submitted so they will work
with multiple python variants. It looks like I need to move to the
info2 format to make this work. I've dug over the documentation on
the fink site, but I can't find any specific info on the info2
format. Where is it documented?

The original info file format is well documented on the web site.
But it isn't clear exactly which portions of that description are
applicable to the info2 format. It isn't clear how the info2 format
differs, other than what I can glean from the .info files on my HD (I
see an Info2: at the top, and an at the bottom. What can I
do with an info2 format .info file that I can't do with an old format
info file?

Re: [Fink-devel] Where is info2 format documented?

2005-08-06 Thread Kevin Horton
I had seen that, but was hoping for a bit more. But, if that is all
there is I will try to clarify a few things:

1. These examples suggest that the info2 portion can be imbedded in a
regular .info file. I.e. I don't need to have the Info2: at
the top of the file. But, if I look at the .info files on my HD, I
can only find the Info2: at the top of the file. Does the whole
info file need to be inside the Info2 block?

2. I can only use the %type_raw[] and %type_pkg[] pseudo-hashes
inside the info2 portions of the .info file. Is this correct?

3. The only new capability that using info2 adds is the ability to
use %type_raw[] and %type_pkg[] pseudo-hashes. Is this correct?

Thanks,

Kevin Horton

Until pogma's gettexticonv package is introduced that builds gettext and
libiconv at the same time, the solution will remain as it always was:

- remove gettext-dev or libgettext3-dev, whichever is installed
- build and install libiconv
- rebuild gettext, libgettext3-dev and libiconv to be sure everything is
up-to-date.

Hi Kevin,

Info2 (and any future Info3) should wrap the entire contents of
the .info file, yes. The reason for this is that if we ever change
the format of .info files in a non-backwards-compatible way, we want
older versions of Fink to at least be able to detect I won't be able
to understand this. If Info2 is right at the beginning, then it's
guaranteed that every version of Fink will be able to notice it
without getting confused by syntax it doesn't understand.

2. I can only use the %type_raw[] and %type_pkg[] pseudo-hashes

You can only use them in a .info file that's wrapped by Info2. You
can't have both a Info2 and non-Info2 portion of the same .info file--
it either wraps the whole thing, or it's not there at all.

3. The only new capability that using info2 adds is the ability to
use %type_raw[] and %type_pkg[] pseudo-hashes. Is this correct?

Pretty much. Technically, you only need Info2 if you're going to use %
type_* in the Package field, but there's not much you can do with
them otherwise.

Sorry for the confusion, we'll try to make things clearer in the future.

Dave
