Bummer. :-(

I was hoping for some better dynamic stuff (duck typing), and some
quicker ways to define (or at least instantiate) throw away static types
(like a static version of an object literal - or some kind of structural
data types). And maybe some performance tools like inline functions, or
static (jit) constructors - or old favs from as2 like private
constructors. C# has some of this kind of stuff. So does HaXe.

Maybe next time.

Subject:[Flashcoders] AIR from Flash CS3 IDE...

The ability to fire off an AIR application from a FLA quickly is very nice,
but I noticed something... nowhere are the dimensions of the thing set (that
I can see anyway).

So that means my app allowed to resize (don't like that), and because the
size isn't set, a comboBox set at the bottom edge of the app opens *down*
which means items are hidden.

I should dig some more about this, but for now its not allowing me to deploy
an AIR application that I would like to use myself.

Anyone have ideas about this?

2 other options:

Just have one event handler per button.

or use an anonymous function

myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, function(){doSomething
(1);});

private function doSomething(index:int):void
{
trace(index);
}

(I havent tested the code above, so there might be some syntax errors).

Personally, I would always have one event listener per button as I
feel it make it a little easier to read the code.

In this case, though, I wouldn't even do that. You can just use
event.target to determine which button was pressed:

var button:Button = Button(event.target);
// Do stuff with button.

If you need to specifically use an index number, I'd attach that to
the

button instances themselves. Then you could retrieve that via
event.target.

 Subject: [Flashcoders] AS 3 - event args

 Hi there. I am just beginning my adventure into AS 3, and came upon
 something.

 In AS 2 I used to use a custom delegate class to deal with scope
issues,
 but also be able to pass args (in an array, single string, etc)
to my

 event functions.

 So for example, I might have something in AS 2:

 // snipped fro ma method
 for (var j:Number = 0; j  5; j++) {
 this._targetMc[dtBtn + j].onPress =
 MyDelegate.create(this, onPressed, j);
 }

 // event method
 function onPressed(i:Number) {
 trace(i);
 }

 So the custom class would allow this to work in my classes.

 Now in AS 3 as I have read, the basic delegate class is no longer
needed
 as the scope issues are dealt with now.

 So how would I go about accomplishing the same thing in AS 3?

 passing an arg to an event method?

 Thanks!

 Dustin

Re: [Flashcoders] [AS3] Compiling just from AS3 code, no mxml files

There is not support for using the Flex Framework in an AS only
project. While it is theoretically possible, you would have to
manually bootstrap a lot of the application initialization code that
Flex handles (something which would be rather complex).

If you want to play with the framework, but don't want to layout your
app with mxml, then the easier way is to create a simple mxml file
that contains an application tag, and a script tag that then points
to your code.

This way, the application tag will take care of all of the
initialization, and you can then leverage the framework via
ActionScript.

If you just want to use ActionScript and no framework, then mxmlc

What are you basing that on? The underlying Player, not framework

In fact, Flex was originally built and designed with scalability as a
primary goal (as it was originally focused at the Enterprise space).

And Flex based apps can easily communicate with backends such as ASP,

Actually, that is a little different. That would work if running the

However, running in standalone would not work. You would have to

I am in the process of building an ActionScript 3 library to wrap this.

Every API should work, although:

2. they currently don't have a crossdomain.xml file, so you have to go

Things have changed quite a bit between Flex 1.x and Flex 2 (which is of
course still in beta).

With Flex 2, you can distribute Flex-generated SWFs however you like. There
is no required server component for applications developed with just the
Flex 2 compiler. There are optional server components, which will likely be
quite useful, since most Flex 2 applications will probably fetch data from a
server of some sort anyway, but they are not required by the Flex 2 compiler

No. This is not correct.

The Player and Framework support sending and receiving data to the
server in a number of ways:

HTTP
Binary and XML Sockets
AMF

On top of this player support, the Flex framework provides:

HTTPService - makes HTTP calls a little easier
SOAP and XML-RPC based web services

This is all in the player and the framework, and is available (and free)
to everyone.

Subject: [Flashcoders] Flexbuilder 2 Alpha IDE problems

I realize its still in Alpha, but has anyone noticed that highlighting
long lines of code in the Flexbuilder 2 IDE is sometimes problematic, as
the highlighting is sometimes delayed behind the cursor for as long as a
few seconds? For example, if I try and click and drag my cursor across
the following line in order to highlight it for a copy/paste:

mx:PieChart id=pieChart dataProvider={panelTitle}
showDataTips=true

The highlighting suddenly stops at the d in dataprovider and then
continues, then stops again a few characters later, then continues, etc.
It seems to be worse when I try and highlight from right to left instead
of left to right. Also, the problem is inconsistent as to what
characters it stops at the next time I try. Eclipse didn't have that
problem as far as I remember. Anyone else experiencing the same? It's
a fairly annoying problem that slows down work.

Also, is there a proper place to report bugs in Flexbuider 2? I
couldn't seem to find a place on labs.macromedia.com - probably just
missed it, or maybe its on macromedia.com

Yes you can :-)
But in this case, a warning (not an error) kept showing up that

changes to the

value that was bound to the title of the panel would
not be 'spotted'.
I think this means that in order to do some kind of dynamic

binding, a

data source

is required that emits (modelChanged?) events (or
something in that direction).

I just kind of worked around it by using a variable (panelTitle)

instead of some

node (name) nested inside an xml strucure.
I'm pretty sure there's a way to use {myXML.day[0].name} as the

title

value (and

not get any warnings), but I'm not that smart yet,

created by the actionscript within the tag. So you cannot use

you

have to make them a single variable like your code below?

panelTitle = myXML.day[0].name;
mx:Panel title={panelTitle} width=300 height=200/

Thanks for the help. I suppose then you cannot use dot syntax on
actionscript objects outside of a script tag. Only single

Re: [Flashcoders] Flex Builder 2 - FP8?

2005-10-19 Thread Mike Chambers

No. Currently Flex Builder creates Flash Player 8.5 SWFs.

Of course, you couldn't use any of the new AS3 abilities, but can it
work like Flash 8 - as long as you don't use any new features, you can
still publish back to FP7.

I'm using PrimalScript for external coding at the moment (only just
getting into it) but I can see the advantage of using Flex Builder 2
instead...

Re: [Flashcoders] Will ActionScript 3 require me to rewrite my apps to use it?

2005-10-19 Thread Mike Chambers

Comments below:

Judah Frangipane wrote:

1. A lot of things have change and moved in AS3. Will my flash app have
to be converted to compile to AS3?

Yes. You will have to do some migration. How much will depend on you
content, but you will have to do things like explicitly give classes
modifiers.

2. Will there be some sort of way to have a V2 AS2 component run inside
a AS3 app? Or will old functions be deprecated or completely removed?

V2 components are written in AS2. In order for those to run within
ActionScript 3 content, they would need to be migrated.

So, v2 components will not run within an AS3 app.

Is it safe to say that our apps will require major conversion to work
with AS3? Or possibly written from the ground up?

Again, it depends on your content. My guess is that you won't have to
re-write it from scratch, but you will have to migrate you code. This
falls into two areas:

1. syntax correction / changes
2. API changes (i.e. moved APIs, events no longer requiring proxies).

My experience has been that I have had to update syntax modified, and
change my event handling code to no longer use event proxies. I also
have to import a couple of packages because some APIs moved.

Hope that helps...

Re: [Flashcoders] Need for the Flex Server

2005-10-19 Thread Mike Chambers
Just to clarify, we have not removed support for AMF from the player.
You can still write code in ActionScript 3 that connects to existing
Flash Remoting servers.

The Flex Framework currently supports using a newer version of AMF in
the player. Currently, the only servers that support this are ColdFusion
(via an alpha adapter) and Flex Enterprise Services (which is not in
public alpha yet). As far as when third party remoting services support
this, you will need to talk to those project's leaders.

I think that you are right that you need *a* server, but not *the* server.

Today you can use SOAP or standard HTTP to access server data.
Unfortunately they do not seem to be supporting the existing
AMF/Remoting standard which was up until now, the most popular way for
flash to access heavy duty server based services. Now to do that kind
of stuff, you will need to use the Flex Enterprise Services server.

Orphaning their existing technology is, I do believe, an unfortunate decision.

This brings up an interesting point. Exactly when is the server beneficial
to have? Seems to me that if the point of Flex is to create applications,
which by their very nature tend to be rather data-centric products, then
wouldn't the server be required to do anything of substance? What, really,
does the server add to the mix? And what can Flex accomplish on its own
without the server?

Thanks,

Try this (tested and works here);

I think the main issue was that you were not importing the classes. I
changed a few other things also. Let me know if this doesn't run, or if

Re: [Flashcoders] Remoting (attn: Mike Chambers)

2005-10-19 Thread Mike Chambers

Hi.

First of all, if you need to direct an email to my attention, please
email it to me, and not to FlashCoders:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

second, as I posted earlier, remoting / AMF0 is supported in the Player
(as Muzak demonstrated). AMF0 is not currently supported in the
framework (AMF3 is).

The mx.* packages are part of the framework. The flash.* classes are
part of the player.

This is an early ALPHA, so documentation and implimentations may not be
complete.

hank williams wrote:

Ok, so I am potentially back to my original position of being
concerned that remoting is not supported.

Muzak did some work with the netConnection class, but in the old
days remoting worked by requesting a service from a NetConnection by
calling connection.getService(servicepath);

There is no getService call documented in the actionscript
documentation, so my question is how does this work now?

I am thinking it is related to the mx.rpc.remoting package, but the
documentation seems ah... scant.

for the RemoteObject constructor is says:

public RemoteObject(destination:String = null)
Creates a new RemoteObject.

Parameters
destination:String (default = null) — [optional] Destination of the
RemoteObject; should match a destination name in the flex-services.xml

but what is flex-services.xml. And if I am writing pure actionscript
why would I need to establish a flex-services.xml file either locally
or on a server.

I ask this question because you (mike chambers) earlier today said we
could do remoting via actionscript without flex components and without
the flex enterprise services. So I am really just looking for the
equivalent calls to using netConnection and a netServiceProxy.

Thanks
Hank
