Re: [Flashcoders] OT - Installing PHP, MySQL?

2007-03-27 Thread Alexander Farber

Hello Dave,

my advice (and I have to deal with RH Linux 80% of
my work time) to you and other designer guys here is:
don't fall for Linux hype, go with OpenBSD.

You install the core system, which already has Apache 1
with many security improvements (compared to the original
Apache code) and which runs in chroot (i.e. if one of your
scripts gets hacked, the abuser will stay locked in /var/www
directory and as a non-root user).

Then you just install PHP (hardened) and MySQL or
PostgreSQL packages using the pkg_add command
and you're ready to go.

And if you add this line into your pf.conf (firewall config):
block out quick on $ext_if proto { tcp, udp } all user www
then any PHP worms won't have a chance to propagate...

Etc. etc... Search for OpenBSD hosting and you'll love it.

Regards
Alex

Re: [Flashcoders] OT - Installing PHP, MySQL?

2007-03-26 Thread Jason Cordial

I guess how hard relates to what kind of remote access you have. I'm
guessing Windows is the os, and PHP/MySQL on Windows has been a piece of
cake for me. I've done it more than a few times on different computers.
However, I've never done it remotely. If you have remote desktop access to
the computer, then it should be just as easy as if you had physical access
to the box. There are very nicely documented sources on how to install both
PHP and MySQL, and with a bare minimum computer knowledge, you should do
fine. However, I can't think of how you could do it with any other kind of
remote access... I'm guessing they gave you remote desktop access though, so
you should do fine.

Security shouldn't be taking lightly, if you leave something open where your
client's machine vulnerable and in fact gets broken into you (or your
company) will be liable.

If you have an IT department let them do it thats what they get paid for,
you wouldn't like the IT department designing your next site ;)

Re: [Flashcoders] OT - Installing PHP MySQL on a remote server

2007-03-23 Thread Gustavo Duenas
I did the installation of php and mysql in my computer(mac) using the
terminal, but when I learned, I did it on linux, so it is not much
different in both, but in windows I guess in php.org or mysql.org,
there is the
.exe files to install the programs. In mac and linux wasn't much
different in both the compiler tells you what is wrong and what you
might need, I don't have any clues in windows systems, but go through
their websites , they have a lot of tutorials there about how to
install over multiple systems and in remote servers. First you'll
need shell access (ssh) and root access, then you could install it,
using the files you previously have downloaded/uploaded.
