Re: [Flexradio] [OT] not my fault...
Ken Thanks! Very diplomatically handled. This is NOT inconsistent with paradigm shifts, which the mass of people do not like, suspect, and take every opportunity to criticize most of all because it is 'different' with little merit to the biased criticism. The only thing that we can do is counter the claims as you have done here. It concerns all of us. Thanks for being a continued faithful pioneer and supporter, to a radio we know is the future of radio! One which continues to get better. To whom it may concern, I heard a group of guys on 14.168 tonight discussing the eHAM review posted by AA8VL. It seems that some of the readers of the eHAM review came away with the opinion that AA8VL purchased a crummy used SDR that was built from kit parts in Bulgaria; it was thought that the rig had cold solder joints, and a host of problems associated with the older SDR rigs. For the record, the rig was my SDR-1000, formerly owned by George W5YR(SK). The rig had been thoroughly checked out at Flex on August 8th and was working perfectly. I loaned the rig to Al K2WS who used it to help him make comparisons with his own rig as he worked through some apparent RFI issues. Al used the rig on the air, and even had a demo QSO with AA8VL using my SDR on Al's KW AMP. There were no bulgarians involved, no cold solder joints, and no problem with the PA in Al's shack or mine, and no messy homebrew mods of any kind. AA8VL had his $$ promptly returned in full. The rig is supposed to be returned to me this next week. The whole sale was totally up front with no gimmicks, no information withheld, no 'as-is' junk. The sale was undertaken as an honest attempt to help an avid ESSB operator realize the power and vision of the SDR-1000 and the PowerSDR software. I think it is notable that AA8VL did not seek the advice or assistance of the powerful Teamspeak channel, nor of this wide-ranging and truly helpful email forum. thanks for the email bandwidth, de Ken N9VV ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz
[Flexradio] Slightly Off-Topic
Terry AB5K was over yesterday and we were working on getting everything buttoned up and interoperable for our upcoming DXpedition/CQWW SSB trip to V31 in a couple of weeks. In case youve been in a coma, were part of the SDR op team going to V31 to conduct the first all-SDR DXpedition and DX contest operation. Well be operating from V31MD, using his antennas and our SDRs. Pre- and post-contest operations will be under our respective calls Terry is V31TG, Larry (WO0Z) V31LL, Eric (AA4SW) V31SD, and me as V31ZL. During the contest well be using Bob Foxs call (and body) as V31MD. Well be running Multi-2 during the contest using N1MM software networked with the radio computers. Though were going at this both as a fun/casual vacation with radios - with some wives along - were also out to prove the viability of SDR technology in a DX/contest environment. Now to the point of this email, and where it strays off topic. Terry and I were trying to get our respective SDR computers interoperating through my home network yesterday to test our design. I have a Linksys 80211.g router set up as a secure (WEP encrypted) network access point and we were having problems getting Terry signed on to the router. After banging on it unsuccessfully for several minutes I suggested we call Linksys tech support on the phone. Id called them before on a previous setup issue and mentioned to Terry that Linksys phone support (free) had always been very good. So I dialed them up on the speakerphone and after the obligatory automated operator maze and (our call volumes are unexpectedly high) five minute wait we were greeted by a live, but very Indian, female support person. (I could see Terrys eyes roll.) As I had experienced on a prior call to Linksys, this was not your usual Indian tech support call. This lady was all business - focused, knowledgeable, and wasted no time getting our problem sorted out. VERY impressive! Im an unabashed user of customer support phone lines when I run out of runway with online help, but theyve mostly gone down the tubes with all the shifting to cheaper offshore support mills. Linksys, too, has gone to India with their phone support, but its IMPECCABLE! Leaves one to wonder why the huge gap. Bottom line, I *WILL* buy Linksys products in the future. Gary W5ZL

Gary Schmidt W5ZL wrote: Bottom line, I *WILL* buy Linksys products in the future. Drifting things even further off-topic. another reason to support Linksys is that many of their products (in particular, the ubiquitous WRT-54G wireless router) run Linux, and the source code for virtually all the firmware is available. Because of that, several folks have come up with new firmware for the WRT-54G that ranges from enhanced versions of the standard Linksys code, to completely independent Linux distributions. I'm running two WRT-54G units with the OpenWrt firmware, and while I haven't done any of these goofy things with them (yet), it's cool to know that I could run a web or ftp server, hook up a weather station or webcam, run VoIP, or do who knows what else on these little $69 boxes. They even work as access points. :-) John

Re: [Flexradio] Help - Winkey Keyer /SDR1K
Serge, If sounds like you are using the older keyer. Try enabling the new keyer on the Setup-DSP-Keyer form. Uncheck the Iambic option in order to use an external keyer. You will need to specify the keyer source. See the operation manual for details about each control on that form. N1MM is a fairly popular logging program that has a built in keyer (among many other nice features). The hook ups for connecting a key as specified by N4HY are as follows: Pin 8 = CTS = Dash Pin 4 = DTR = Common Pin 6 = DSR = Dot If you are using an external keyer or a straight key, just one either the dot or dash line and the common (and uncheck iambic in the software). How about this one from Jackson Harbor Press? http://jacksonharbor.home.att.net/keyall.htm de Ken ab7r wrote: I have been working on this too with my Microham CW keyer. I called Dale at hamgadgets.com and they no longer have this keying interface. Greg AB7R
[Flexradio] DRM Mode, desired cosmetic features, questions ...
Hi there ... I tried to use the DRM mode. The signal seems to be centered on zero Hertz instead of 11,025KHz. I tried versions 1.4.5 and 1.4.4 only. I remember that on an older version (I don´t now which one) the signal at the line out was centered at 11,025KHz (or 12KHz??). Does anybody has the same behaviour? I´m using an unsuported card (onboard 16 bit) and a home made QSD. Cosmetics: * Why not make the display reflects the notch filter effect? * For the 16 bit users, a way to make the dBm display lit on a different color when max dbFS is reached (kind of overload indicator)? * Syncronous AM with selectable sidebands (USB, FULL, LSB). We can get this via variable filters anyway but ... who knows. * 6KHz filter on AM ... good on MW ... but on SW the BCs channel spacing still 5KHz so the beat tones are there. So 4KHz or the variable filters are the way to go ... A +/-4980Hz filter will be great. Question: * CWL and CWU: is there any hardware freq change when in CW? Is the transmitted/received signal at the sidebands or the CW signal is zero beat with a shift USB/LSB on local oscilator equal to heard CW tone ? BTW: I´m using an external tunnable prescelector on MW. Impressive performance of the QSD/Software. Beats a Kachina 505DSP on splatter. 73 Marcus PY3CRX/PY2PLL http://py.qsl.br
