You can easily get a notch if you have the RX Equalizer engaged without
intending to have it engaged. Click on the equalizer tab and make sure
they are NOT checked.

a swept (by hand) sine. The passband looked flat without notches in both
cases.

Test conditions were LSB, 40 meters, with filter widths of 2.1K, 2.6K, and
4KHz. M44 SoundCard. And no other software running (no MMTTY, MixW,

Could the notch you're seeing be an interaction between Preview 8 and the

Subject: [Flexradio] Unhandled
Exceptions after new graphics install

Hello, all.

After upgrading my CPU from an Athlon XP 1800+ to a XP 2600+
I was running v1.4.4 without a problem. I also upgraded from 512 mb of
ram to 1024 mb.

However, after upgrading to a new video graphics card, I
have the following errors on all versions of PowerSDR Console, including 1.3.9,
1.4.3, and 1.4.4 uninstalled and reinstalled. Tried new v1.4.5 preview 8
but got these same unhandled exceptions.

My new video card is a VisionTek ATI Radeon 9600XT AGP with
400 MHz internal DAC, 128 MB memory and the latest drivers from 11/22/05
version 8.201.0.0 uninstalled and reinstalled twice for good measure.

I do not see where to turn on GLI otr turn off
Direct-X. I do not believe that Direct-X has anything to do with my
problem...not when trying to run an old version of PowerSDR console.

Does anyone have any clues? Last ditch effort next is
to take out newvideo card andreinstal old one to see if that will
work. Unless that course of action becomes a new unexplained
miracle,I am completely unable to use my SDR-1000 now.

[Flexradio] Video Cards ..

2005-12-22 Thread Larry W8ER

It's nice to have friends with spare video cards
hanging around! I had a chance over the last couple of days to diss the Intel
graphics supreme video adapter, that is part of my motherboard, and try an ATI
Radeon 7500 and a GeForce2 MX-400 video card.

I judged performance on the CPU utilization. The
onboard Intel video adapter uses about 4% of the CPU when using the GDI
interface. When going to DirectX the CPU jumps up to about 40% and sometimes as
high as 60% utilization.

The ATI Radeon 7500 was not very spectacular. I
loaded the latest DirectX and the latest drivers (several times) and the GDI
utilization was also 4% and the best DirectX performance was about 25%. One
would be silly to use DirectX in this setup.

The GeForce MX-400 card with 64 meg of memory did
work! Direct X performance was at the 3% to 4% level but again it seems silly to
layout the bucks for a new video card when so little is gained in performance.
Oh by the way, I started getting squirrelly things happening with this card. For
instance the panadapter would go to a white background and give me an error.
Telling it to continue and deselecting the panadapter and reselecting it fixed
it but it happened again when I changed from 160 to 80 meters. UGH!

The future may have some enhancements for those
using DirectX (I am sure). In the meantime I am going back to my POS video
adapter and the GDI interface! Love the POS crap!!

Last but not in the least ... thanks Eric for
Preview 8! The AGC enhancements are superb.

Happy Holidays to all!

[Flexradio] DirectX Decision

2005-12-22 Thread Eric Wachsmann - FlexRadio
We (FlexRadio) have made a decision to hold off on DirectX development
for the time being. This is in the interest of stabilizing the software
with the goal of getting to an official release. We were clearly not
ready for the troublesome launch of this complex new feature and will be
removing this option until after the official release. Subsequent Beta
releases will likely reinstate the DirectX development.

In the meantime, we recommend that if you are using Preview 8, that you
set the SetupForm - Display - Driver Type to GDI+. This control will
be hidden until the next Beta series (likely Beta 1.7.x).

Thanks to all of you who provided feedback. It has been and will be
useful as we continue development on the DirectX implementation in the
future.

Re: [Flexradio] SSB tests

2005-12-22 Thread Tim Ellison
Hi Bob Eric.

OK. Here is what I did, just now to verify the reduced power with
Preview 8. I was really careful about making sure nothing was different
between the two setups.

Using a database from Preview 7, I did a Reset All to reset the DB
back to defaults. I re-ran the PA calibration.

I then deleted the DB for Preview 8 and imported the one from Preview 7
so all the options were exactly the same. No values were changed.

I set up an AF single tone generator set for 877 Hz and placed the mic
in front of the speaker.

Here are the results from Preview 7

ALC = -10.5 dB
PowerSDR Forward PWR = 113 watts
External Watt meter (not calibrated) = 105 watts

Here are the results for Preview 8

ALC = -10.5 dB
PowerSDR Forward PWR = 26 watts
External Watt meter (not calibrated) = 21 watts

This is a significant difference between the two versions. I may have
something configured differently in Preview 7 that is not configured in
Preview 8, but I can't find it. I appreciate any things to try to see
if this truly is a configuration issue.

Eric and I ran tests. We disabled the fast agc and then enabled it. We

could see no difference whatsoever in output power. We used a recording

and we had 150w PEP output with a respectable average.

We can't see a problem. We did not test with Leveler enabled, or
unusual ALC settings. If you have modified these, please try to use the

defaults.

and I get the Microsoft error report screen (send/don't send report) as
soon as the unit is keyed. The program is frozen and I can't turn off

Thanks for Preview 9 I have it working well on Digi
modes with Mixw and now VAC 3.11, I'll see how that goes.
Thanks for all your efforts to bring us the radio
and the software, I can appreciate how much effort has gone into it
all.
Have a good Christmas break and best wishes for
2006.
While you are in the snow and cold, think of us
having Christmas and New year getting sun-burnt.

best wishes

Loaded P9 here. Installed OK, but when I went to setup in immediately
locked up. I imported DB from P8. I tried running FFTW_WISDOM again in
P9 directory. The program comes up, but if you click on anything,
including the Standby button, it locks up.

[Flexradio] OT - USB 'scopes

2005-12-22 Thread pvharman

My 30 y.o. Tektronic D67 has passed away so time for a new ‘scope. Plenty on
ebay but I was wondering about a USB one. Seems quite a few on the market. I
came across this one made in ZL

www.cleverscope.com

Seems they respond to user requests for changes, have a forum etc, and the
features seem very comprehensive. I’m mainly interested in analogue signals
up to about 30MHz so this may fit the bill.

Has anyone made the transition from a CRT to a USB/PC ‘scope and can offer any
advice please?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Flexradio] Preview 9 and TX on SSB error

I was able to resolve my problem by:

1.) Deleting the database and allowing PowerSDR to create a new one.
2.) Run the Freq. Calibration, RX Image Rejection (from a freq.
Generator) and Level Calibration
3.) Run the PA Gain calibration.

Go figure?

The only anomaly I saw was that the RX Image calibration routine
exceeded 100% and finished at ~110%

Re: [Flexradio] Question about Auto Power on

Thanks Eric for your reply. Would be very nice to control the SDR1k via
touchscreen so I'll wait and for future power-sdr releases.
Leon,
I own sdr1k for 6 month now and I never had unwanted keydown or something
strange happening. My Pc and sdr are running 24h a day and even when
ac-power is lost sometimes (mostly when tinkering on other projects) pc-and
sdr-software are starting without any problems. When I put the whole stuff
in a box and have all cabels properly fixed I'm on the safe side I think Of
course I'll have a eye on it when new beta release is installed. Strange
things can happen everywhere and any time even if you have a 10.000$ rig in
your shack. I'm not afraid having the radio started automatically.

Imagine how boring the(ham's)world would be if we were able to reach
perfection!

Merry Christmas to all of you

 Hello to all,
I plan to put the sdr1k in a solid case together with a small itx-
 mainboard,
8'' LCD and shuttle pro controller. Power SDR will be in the
autostart-folder. Is there a way to start the radio without taking a

 and click the ON-button ?
Maybe I take a Touchscreen LCD but in this case it would be nice to
 control
the frequency by tipping on the screen. (frequency up-down-button or
 something like that)
btw: I'm very pleased with new beta8 (especially the new agc and

 max-gain)

 Martin

Well, it's your radio and Eric writes the code, but IMHO this is not as
good an idea as it sounds.

I've had some very strange things happen once in a while. I don't want
the rig to turn on after an AC power failure in the middle of the
afternoon, assuming your PC comes back up with it. Strange things
happen. Rarely, but they do happen and Murphy says it will be at just
 the wrong moment.

I've had the rig go into keydown because the parallel cable worked
loose, for instance. I'm currently fighting a Windows bug where it all
locks up with the rig in who knows what state.

Do you really want the thing to come on like that when you might be out
 of the shack?

The whole sidebands, phase noise, spur issue with DDSes, particularly into
a mixer, is pretty complex. There's a good analysis of the DDS spur issue
from Martin Pechanec

http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/5611/dds.html

However, Martin doesn't consider the effects of driving the QSD/QSE, nor
the effects of the low pass filter in the SDR1000 (which, being something
other than a gaussian, has a non linear phase vs frequency
characteristic). With these sorts of detectors/modulators, the timing of
the zerocrossings is moderately important. (otherwise, you could just feed
the MSB into the logic and be done with it.. leaving aside the DAC and
filters).

You need to look at the phase noise of your counter and thresholding
circuit (for the Johnson counter). Folks designing high performance
microwave PLLs obsess about such things, because they're a significant
contributor to overall performance. Don't forget that digital circuitry
doesn't have non-zero jitter, and picoseconds make a difference. (If
you're sampling a 30 MHz signal (period = 33 ns), a timing error of 1 ps is
equivalent to an amplitude sampling error of approximately 1E-12/33E-9, or
30 ppm. (about -90 dBc, if your sinewave happens to be exactly full scale)

 Hello,
I started with a new database and beta 9 works fine here until I switched
the transmit-equalizer on: Error message appears with overflow error and
I
got red cross on white ground in the scope window. Then I have to restart
power-sdr and switch transmit equalizer off. Then everything works fine
 again.

  Eric,

With Preview 9 in SSB mode, as soon as I modulate the signal in SSB
(upper and lower) and DigiU modes I immediately get a white box outlined
with a red line and a red cross in the middle. I also get an unhandled
  exception:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

Re: [Flexradio] Preview 9 and TX on SSB error

2005-12-22 Thread Larry W8ER

Bob,

Me and a couple of other Flex owners have tried to make the processing
features work ever since their inclusion. We have tried several versions as
the code. Our results have been utter failures. We gave up when setting all
of the EQ filters to 0 and activating the EQ gave us wierd unusual sounds,
when in fact the activations should have made no perceptable change in the
audio at all, receive or transmit. I do not think the processing code has
ever worked properly.

The radio works great! Using external processing, it is easy to set things
up to sound very very nice. When I say external audio processing, all I am
talking about is a mic preamp, a 31 band Rane EQ, and a slight amount of
compression (3 to 6 db). That's not a lot different than the audio
processing that was included in the PowerSDR software!

My reason for this post is just to let someone know what I have found, not
to be critical of anyone associated with writing the code. I just can't go
along with others who seem to think that it's the answer to audio tailoring.
Sorry!

Sigh. This is not an overnight fix. The IIR filters were right on the
hairy edge, barely working right before. Moving from double
precision to single pushed it over the edge into instability. I HATE IIR.

Okay, sans choice, it will have to be done right.
