Re: [Flexradio] Flex 3000 for Sale

2014-05-12 Thread Dale Hankins
Michael I have owned all the previous flex radios and now own the 6500. Great
radio but still in the building mode. I ran my flex 5000 and 3000 remote for
several years and the thought of working off the World Wide Web on a 6000 is
what really got my attention. Now for the bad news. At this time the 3000 works
better remotely than the 6000. I have not even worried with remote ing the 6000
until it will work as presented. I am not saying this to tell you to hold off
just the opposite now is a great time to get the radio learn how to use it and
enjoy every new update as they come out. We are a way from web remote but they
have promised it and the Flex team have never let me down. I would also caution
you on video graphics card for the 6000. I went with a r7260x latest and
greatest but there are issues causing crashes that appear to be driver issues
which cannot be fixed. If you have good video on your board stat with it and if
going to a high performance card be sure to get at least th
ree peopl who run it on your type of machine.

Glad to see you move up to the 6300.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex radios rj 45 adapter

2014-03-29 Thread Dale Hankins
I guess I am from the old school. I have bought a couple of the heil cables
(when they were with the mic I was buying) and overall they disappointed me
writh the quality of components and workmanship. Time after time I encounter
people running these cables and having issues only to find I bad solder
contraction or a breakdown in the plug. This is not a bash on heil mic I have 4
and two head sets , but if you need a adapter cable for a RJ 45 just take a cat
five cable cut the plug off one end to needed length and add the desired
connector 1/4 female of a male inline 4 or eight pin Foster, yes they are
available. If you need a ptt capability comming off the mic for a foot ptt or
push button the just bring out a two conductor wire from the top of the inile
connector (remember you have ptt on the back of the radio.

Every cat five cable will make two adapter cables. Oh you are worried about RFI
! Well many of the cat five cables are twisted pair and I have run this type
connector not only with my flex 3000 and 1500 but also with a vast number of ts
480 and ic 706 Moble at legal limit no RFI . In the shack legal limit alpha
8410 no RFI .

You save a lot of money, have a adapter the length you want and have the pride
you did it yourself. Avoid the inline fosters that are cast metal they tend to
have issues.

Hi Matthew and Steve,

KJ4TN’s message about the S3 noise level minimum on the Flex 3K describes my
experience as well. While it varies from band to band a bit, my S Meter never
approaches zero, including when the antennas are disconnected or when I am
connected directly to the dummy load. Noise level runs around 100.
Preamps have a small effect. Sent back to the factory last year for new preamps
plus complete checkout and was given assurances every thing was A-OK at that
time. Everything else runs perfect! Using PowerSDR v2.7.2. Maybe a calibration
or adjustment issue?? Not overly concerned but curious just the same. Thanks!

While I am impressed with the 6700 and I know that, in time, the software
will finally mature as It is truly the radio of the future. I find that I
usually use the 3000 as my "go to radio". there are so many features that
just work, and work extremely well, features that may be incorporated into
the 6000 series at some future date.

Not that the 6700 preforms poorly, but there are all those little things
that need to be checked, tweaked, adjusted, and screwed around every time I
 use it.

Adjusting the spectrum band width, find the correct frequency, mode,
making sure that the + 20db gain button has been pushed, tweak the receive
equalizer to reset its setup and adjust the many other features to my
 preference.. and then, begin operating.

Better hold on to your 3000 or 5000A for a while and enjoy the quality and
ease of operation from these radios for a while.

Also don't blaming the speakers until you see if you have stray rf , if you can
find one of the old cb meters with the antenna that will pick up rf without
being hooked to a radio, a field strength meter. That will show if you have
stray rf.

Hi,

I am hoping you can help a fellow "flexer", I am finding difficulty in
achieving a smooth power increase whilst using SSB.

A little more information needed I know, but what I mean is the following:

I owned an FT2000 and when I was transmitting,my power meter would stay steady
at the required power output when my meter was set at peak hold. This was with
the linear switched in or not.

My challenge (more noticeable with the linear in, usually run 200 watts) with
the flex is that my meter will show an average power output of say 110 watts
then on the next voice peak may shoot up to 200 watts.  It would appear there
is no control or smoothing out of my audio input and I am not to sure where to
start.

I spoke to a station today and he said that although my signal was clear and
strong  there appeared to be some  Intermodulation being introduced on peaks
(probably because of the surge in power with no control ?)

I assume hang and attack times can be adjusted to help ? But I am not sure.

I use a Tokyo Hi Power HL700b with the flex wire connected to the ALC socket on
the amp.

Hopefully you can help.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 6000's are shipping?

2013-07-08 Thread Dale Hankins
I agree I got number 50 limited edition flex 6500.

Radio has not disappointed me one bit even with the limited preview software.

The radios are rolling off at a "normal pace" and I feel they will be hitting
many people's doors ASAP.

My mom always said something good was worth waiting for. Believe me I had paid
for mine a year& 1 month before I got it and mom might be with God but she was
right, it was worth waiting for. Got my radio one week ago and have had three
updates and loving every minute I am on it.

Hang in there and the reward will be extra sweet!

Guess what the 6500 leaves them in the shade.

Iam going to replace my 3000 with a 5000a,with the RX2 installed.
Two questions come to mind, did look at the manual 2.0 didn't really find
answers. I have the amplified speakers from my 3000 to use with the 5000's
primary receiver.  With the second receiver installed, how do you listen to its
output?  also the two receivers can work different bands at the same time .or
not. Is there a source or write up that explains  the full operation and use of
the second receiver?
thanks for any help.

So I think the standard ThermalTake TT3025  fans (21CFM) should be about
perfect and not need a resistor mod.

Re: [Flexradio] [FlexEdge] Suggestions - EMI/RFI Suppressors & Ferrites

2012-12-22 Thread Dale Hankins
I have owned the Sdr 1000, two flex 3000's and the flex 5000 absolutely no RFI
running a alpha 8410 and several solid state kw amps and tentec 425 amp.
Inverted vs on 75,40,20,18,10 and log periodic .

I have computer and all items grounded at one spot to earth ground which was
checked with a meger.

I did have some issues with the DDR 1000's ,I had one of all three production
runs. But they were with the cables staying pluged in the back.

All in all I have been extremely happy with the lack of RFI. From what I have
heard on here the people who have had a lot of trouble also with regular radios.

It isn't a DLL. It is a corrupted Performance Counter library.

No luck adding the ground or the two chokes on each end of the fire ware
cable.

It seems just 20m even when I don't use my Acom 2k. If I turn the drive up
to 75w
the audio cuts in and out and I can hear the relays in the 5K.

All other bands qro are fine, no issue.

Must be some harmonic on 20m getting into the box or feeding back into it.

Suggestions ??

I don't have a ground on the PC so I'll add that tonight and see how it
works.

I did have a choke on each end of the fw cable but that didn't work but I
had no ground then.
I'll put a choke on each end of the fw if adding the ground on the PC
doesn't work.

Stay tuned.

Thanks for the replies.

Frank,

That definitely sounds like RF feedback. The most likely culprit is the
firewire cable. I had the same issue running my amp with my FLEX-5000A.

First, make certain that your PC is connected to the shack ground. After
all, it is better than half of the radio.

If you are using the stock firewire cable that came with the rig, replace it
with the one by Granite Digital. Is costs about $40 & is availabel from
Flex.

Finally, if you still are having problems, add ferrite chokes at each end of
the firewire cable.

The above steps eliminated my RF feedback problems entirely. Now I can run
1kW on all bands with no issues.

Re: [Flexradio] Current Flex 3000 software shuts down when running high power.

2011-09-08 Thread DALE HANKINS
I have run three different SDR 1000's , a Flex 3000 and now a Flex 5000A.
Never had a problem with rf when running a Yaesu Quadra at 1200 watts, a
TenTec centurion at 1400 Watts and now a Alpha 8410 at legal limit. The
point I am making is that getting proper ground on all equipment in the
shack seems to be the answer. I have worked with several people on rfi with
their Flex and I found that almost all of them had rf in the shack before
the flex but did not realize it.

I have the Grafite cable but do not use it. When I set my shack up I used a
MEGGER to check my ground under load of 500 volts. When I got that to the
best I could I then used a one point ground system which grounds all my
equipment to my amplifier( or Tuner if you want) and the ground wire to the
ground rod. All my grounds are the same length and are the silver brade from
military grade rg214.

The main point I am trying to make is the Flex radios in my case have less
issues with RFI than my Ten Tec Orion I had. Yes I do ground the computer
also.

Just my take on what might be your problem.

Colleagues,

I have been running PowerSDR 2.1.5 under Windows 7/32 with a Flex-5000 since
its release a few weeks ago with minimal problems. This morning I started
PowerSDR and found that my memories pop-up window was empty. I did not have

save myself some effort if this glitch appears again.

I understand that SSHD's are not necessarily "Plug & Play" like a standard

My motherboard is an Asus P5K Premium/WiFi-AP and I have looked thru the
manual and nothing is mentioned about the SSHD's.

How do I determine if my system can use one?

ron my previous SDR 1000 with my Quadra never had this problem. Saw the

Too nice a amp to give it up. I do not have a problem with my tentec

radio has to run a low tech amp. Not what I expected.

noticed

the "average" power output appears to be in the 700 watt level ? Unlike my

the

These spikes in output power occur with or without the DX button engaged.

Any ideas?

David,

Thanks for the tip regarding the CamStudio software. I had a lot of fun
playing around with it yesterday. Although it does produce excellent
video and audio AVI formatted files when played through its own internal
player, and also VirtualDub, their CamStudio Lossless Codec (v 1.5) does
seem to be incompatible with YouTube, where it produces a colorless and
odd 45 degree angled shot. I did a some searching at various video
forums and apparently many others have run into this, with no solutions
offered as yet. I posted a quick video showing the 45 degree angle
effect here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PNBLnIUo7g

I have used FRAPS for a long time to grab video from games like COD4 and
MW2, but would agree that its a resource hog. CamStudio looks like the
most promising thing out there for use with PSDR. Hopefully, subsequent
versions of the Codec will be more compatible. Incidentally, I did try
recompiling the video with various codecs using VirtualDub, but it
chokes on the CamStudio AVI format and indicates that its corrupt. Have
you found a work-around for dealing with the incompatibility problem?

Thanks,

Rob W1AEX

turned out to be was the switching power supply hanging on the light pool

equipment over and showed the head engeneer where the trouble was. They
replaced everything in the box put all new connectors onb the cables and a

Around here I also found the Comcast telephone / internet modems
particularly bad. And they generate similar 20 dB over noise floor
noise, with a repetition every 100 kHz or so.

Keep your antenna as far away from it as possible. The Comcast tech
made some measurements, and mostly found it "acceptable" (to whom?!).
He did shorten some of the coax lines leading to the junction box,
and that may have detuned the coax shields from resonance.

When I researched the modems, I found that they use barely any
shielding at all, lots of RF bleeds over the outer shield of the coax
and over the RJ45 network connections. I made the network lines into
chokes by coiling them. Could probably use some good ferrites over
them too. Enclosing the whole thing in a NEMA box would help
enormously. I used aluminum foil one night, but the modem will cook
itself to death with prolonged use.

But what I found most infuriating, apart from Comcasts cavalier
attitude about polluting the RF space, is that the units are made in
China (where else?), and they have a fake FCC certification sticker
on them. Anything for a buck, eh?

Final solution was to move the antennas as far away as possible from
all the Comcast coax lines leading around the outside of the house.

[Flexradio] Question on noise floor

2010-10-02 Thread Dale Hankins
Thanks to all that responded on the power supply issue. I pulled one out of
another computer and it is as quite as what I have been running.

On the pan I have about -130 dbm at peak wit -135 at lows on the hash.,nto
dummy load on receive. There is a little has noise and the scope shows
jaggaed peaks.

What shpuld I expect. I feel this is computer poor supply noise. The fact of
the matter in my neighborhood I very seldom get a low noise level (lower
than s1 on ft 2000) so when I add the antenna I am always ove the -130 dbm.
I just would like to know what I should expect into a dummy load.

[Flexradio] Computer power supply question.

2010-10-01 Thread Dale Hankins
I have run flex radios for the last five years. Never a problem with
computers or the power supply. Just built a new computer up but it had
cheap power supply. Lots of noise. What power supply should I look for and
what rating should I look for. Mid tower case with sata drives.
