I meant we can taxis on runway or deck, only with the rotor running (these
helos have wheel)
It less easy (i am not a good pilot) to land exactly on the elevator.

Nice, because the Piasecki (both) , S-51, Lynx wants it,

But it can be fixed quite easily: The fdm allows to tilt the whole
rotor. I just need to add tilting of the rotor in a vertical position
along the fuselage. Then the contact points are within and above the
fuselage. As I added the blade/ wing fold I was not thinking about the
elevators. I thought, the remaining contact points would never hurt.

Ah, ok. But in real life one would land, fold, and then be pulled
to the elevator. In fgfs you land, hop to the elevator, fold,

in reality the Osprey lands on Carrier, and is 'driven' to the hangar
(elevator).
Within FG when you have land it on the Carrier you can manage to taxis it(
admit not easy) with propeller running to the elevator place.

I do that operation with S-51 , H-21C, HUP ...

Much better now. :-)

But the v22 on the elevator is cheating (and thus violating
my personal diktator policies). You can't realistically land
it there, and there's no way to move a v22 to the elevator
once landed. Cheated "screenshots" have annoyed me since
years ... almost decades. Pretty photo-realistic pictures

I don't have time to do this myself, but my script that assembles the
gallery page and creates the medium resolution and thumbnail images and
links everything together does support captions.

What needs to be done (and it's slightly tedious) is to create .txt
for each .jpg or .png with the appropriate caption. If someone
can create those and send them to me, the contents of the .txt file will
replace the file name on the gallery page.

Thanks,

Curt.

That is the problem with JPEG,
however we must choose,
the available space is not infinite ,
for instance the original Rescue image was .ppm 1800x1440 7.4 Mo,
the jpeg one 1600X1200 only 141 ko

The lightning is quite small in the middle in a rather not-so-interesting
position.

Oh, yes. Heiko's screenshots are indeed excellent! Better throw
out half of the current ones, and put Heiko's in. (Except the
one with the helicopter pilot. Humans are hard to do -- I don't
blame the creator. But they aren't something that one should
show close up.)

Now, if some of you think "why does he only criticize, when he didn't
submit a single screenshot himself?". True. But note that I did half
of the screenshots of the last release. And in all humbleness, they
were quite good, too. I'll miss the seafire and the concord+gui on
the fgfs page. Sniff.

I agree.

Another thing: some images seems to lack AA, for example "787gskb9".

A third issue:
http://flightgear.org/Gallery-v1.0/Source/seneca-flash.jpg
http://flightgear.org/Gallery-v1.0/Source/Rescue_1.jpg and several more images
got really bad jpg artifacts that are visible even on the thumbnails.

Seems like someone compressed a jpeg compressed image instead of basing them all
on a looseless original. The result is that the artifacts add up and the images
look bad. For best result all the smaller images should be generated from a
looseless image. And I think the full sized images should use png or very high
quality jpeg.

The one big suggestion I'd make is to drop the current caption for
each photo, which appears to just be the base filename for each
image, and replace it with a brief bit of text that describes what
we're looking at. Some come close to this ("f4u-on-carrier").
But "dhc2F-CYDL-07" is going to be meaningless to a large fraction

I have just added a new snapshot with the same scenery,
the diff:
The Corsair is now on the front deck elevator.

This could avoid any misunderstanding.

BTW: every snapshots links remains here
http://pagesperso-orange.fr/GRTux/
I had only to remove Blackbird-aar_3.jpg (was not significant and not
selected) in order to get space.

Many of the shots are quite good. But some are ... umm ...

  http://www.flightgear.org/Gallery-v1.0/Link/787fujiuy6.html

Dark bump-mapped cloud soup on the bottom, an almost perfect
presentation of our white-mountain/blue-sky bug, and lots of
aliasing steps. Not exactly a teaser.

This is technically well done, but I find the contents disturbing:

  http://www.flightgear.org/Gallery-v1.0/Link/A-6E-Nimitz-01.html

An A-6 in such deep banking with a carrier in the background.
Can easily happen in real life, but I still find it weird.
Somehow my brain wants them more aligned. But that's probably
just me. :-)

This shows repetitive sky and rather ugly terrain.

It's on an elevator, if I'm not mistaken. There's also another mid-deck
elevator shaft just behind the foreground plane. Of course, whether someone
who sees it for the first time will think "oh, there's an elevator" or "oh,
the plane's sinking into the deck" is another matter.

Melchior commented that low light and dark screen shots just don't come out
looking all that great in thumbnails and smaller versions. We have quite a
few darker shots already. I'd like to find something that is more towards
the middle of the day so that everything is brighter.

Hm another issue: in S-51-on_carrier one of the aircrafts in the background
seems partly below deck?

Also I see jpeg artifacts even in the largest version, I would suggest that the
full versions are either done in png or highest quality jpeg.

Also some of the full sized pngs load faster than the medium sized jpgs (example
dhc2F-CYDL-07). Odd. I used optipng -o 7 on all my pngs before uploading them.

Ok, I'll remove that, but I'd be happy to add back in some other Aerostar
picture if it was submitted.

Yes, this Paris screenshots (at least 1 day, 1 night) should be in the
Gallery - and 1 shot of the nice Paris airport (was Orly???), too.
Because these are no fake, the scenery *is* usable (if you have at least
a medium performance PC) and shows how FlightGear sceneries can look
like if someone is just doing the work.
This scenery is an inspiring exampel for my Northern Germany Scenery
work (EDDW, EDDV).

are 1600x1200.

All of them available here

I think two things causes that.
1) reduced pressure in the air-wheels ("simulated" by placing the wheels
in the 3D-Model a few cm below the position in the FDM)
2) the bumpiness of the surfaces which only the YASim-aircrafts can
see/feel, but which is not visible in the OpenGL rendering

Well, I'd buy it :-) I'm amazed at the range and volume of models that we
have (and the rate that they seem to be accumulating), many of them very
nicely detailed.

> 4. Do we have a nice outside view of a glider or two?

Unfortunately external appearance isn't a strong point of the Bocian yet
because (as usual!) I've concentrated solely on the cockpit and have still to
do lots of the exterior stuff :-\

Heiko's ASK looks very nice though, and he has some very good screenshots of
it too - hopefully he will reappear with them soon...

Cheers,

[Flightgear-devel] v1.0 Gallery Page

2007-12-18 Thread Curtis Olson
Here is a prototype for the v1.0 Gallery:

http://baron.flightgear.org/~curt/tmp/v1.0/

I've taken the best of the pictures that were submitted on the mailing list
and organized and arranged them.

Here are a few things that jump out at me:

1. The big commercial jets with glass cockpits seem very under represented.

2. It would be nice to have a couple more interior shots showing some of our
full 3d, fully operational cockpits.

3. A few of the pictures are really great, but some of them could be
improved upon. There's no time limit for sending me better images that
could either be added to the page, or replace an existing image. (Our
primary goal is to show our best side here, if someone's image is removed or
replaced, please don't be upset!)

4. Do we have a nice outside view of a glider or two?

5. Can someone send an image of the osprey with it's rotors all folded up?

6. The aspect ratios on these images are all over the map which makes the
page look really sloppy. I would like to standardize on a 1.333 aspect
ratio (1024x768 or 1600x1200, but not 1280x1024). Would it be possible to
find a volunteer willing to crop the original images so they all have a
matching aspect ratio and thus line up on the page? I can send you the raw
images or provide a place for easy download (like right here:
http://baron.flightgear.org/~curt/tmp/v1.0/Source/)

7. The thumbnails and larger versions of the images are all autogenerated
via a script so we have some control over the styling of the page, but there
are limits. Mostly I'd like to focus on expanding our set of quality
pictures and we can worry about page layout details a little later.

Thanks,

Curt.
