allan's response to john's poems reminded me of some things i used to do a lot
of, but which now i don't do at all (no, not that! writing)

i used to write letters and short 'stories' in which words would trigger a
string of connected words, connected by letter formations that is. i had a
strict(ish) rule that the whole phrase or paragraph should be one continuous
flow, one worg in effect. above is an example which does not follow that rule!

i think the last attempt i made was way back in NYC (2002!) and i gave it to
melissa, i wrote her a note. a few weeks later the most beautiful piece of
calligrahy turned up in the mail. melissa had found all the words.

now i have the words but i don't know what the note said!

just in case anyone was remotely interested this is:

i am able to express myself clearly but words keep getting in the way and

FLUXLIST: An Historical Atlas of Fluxlist - Proposal

2006-02-08 Thread alanfffo

resend for dbc

--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 An Historical Atlas of Fluxlist

Fluxlist has effectively evolved into a small

community, an example of the 'global village' at its

most, well villagy (sp?). Village elders and

village idiots, friends and vague acquaintances,

over the back fence chatters, curtain twitchers, the

odd recluse and a whole host of folks who just go

about their daily business, minding their own and

showing up at the odd parish meeting to put their

two pennerth in. On occasion itinerant travellers

wander through offering wares varying from the

delightful to the downright dubious. Sometimes the

circus turns up and erects its big-top in the

 carpark, sometimes hooligans from neighbouring

villages show up and cause fights in the pub.

People pass away and are mourned, people get

married, have babies and their neighbours raise

their glasses in acknowledgement. Sometimes new

villagers turn up out of the blue and others up

sticks and move away to the city.

The strange thing is that most of the villagers live

thousands of miles away from each other, many have

never met any of the others, some have met but a

handful, many can not put a face to the name and

most a probably quite unaware of the existence of

 some of the remainder.

 The idea is this:

To construct an historical and geographical atlas of

 fluxlist, past and present.

Each current member of Fluxlist is invited to write

about another - a biographical piece placing that

 person geographically, historically and contextually

 into the story of Fluxlist.

These biographical pieces may be based on truth or

complete fantasy. Pieces may vary in length, there

being no maximum or minimum enforced and may be

written in any language deemed appropriate by the

author. Anecdotes and stories of bravery, stupidity

or particularly successful dinner parties, artworks

and animals, music and missing weekends. When and

how they joined Fluxlist, motives and mysterious

 sudden disappearances. Notable contributions to

Fluxlist, faux pas and folly. Place of birth, date

of birth, date of first date and outcome.

 Famous/noted/ignored for... Place of abode,

distance travelled by bicycle, bravelled by tricycle

and amount of interest in % of learning to unicycle.

Information on place of abode, including address,

 city, state, country etc.

Participants may produce as many 'biographies' as

 they wish.

Or you could write something completely different.

The aim is document Fluxlist to date, to produce

something which records Fluxlist membership at

various levels, not just names but information about

the person, a short biography (as stated) and

information about their geographical location (and

their location in time if you so wish).

Entries may be duplicated. In fact duplicate

entries, especially about 'active' members, are to

be encouraged thus building up a broader view of the

 individual.

Eventually the biographies will be used to build up

 a 'map' of Fluxlist.

The aim is to publish this 'atlas', eventually, as

an actual book if costs are not too prohibitive, and

in digital format (PDF and HTML)

Those interested in contributing are kindly

requested to let me know within the next week or so.

 Thanks

 Alan

Subject: Art Show Opportunity

  Hello Creative Friends,

There's a possibility that in March, I'm going to curate an art show

of empty walls. It follows a long saga of budgetary/political problems,

but I'm starting to see it as an opportunity for a Fluxus-inspired

event. I want to host an art show with no art.

My idea is to solicit contributions of creative friends (and their

friends) for descriptions of art which doesn't exist. You provide the

Title / Artist / Medium / 25 - 100 word description and a short bio (25

words or less, this part should be reasonably truthful). The text will

be printed on a lovely card and mounted on the wall, under a large

chunk of blank space. There will even be an opening night with free

wine and cheese cubes.

An obvious theme for such a show might be censorship, but it could

include reactions to our current political world, fantasies,

commercialization, abstracts...whatever. I doubt that I need to explain

too much to you.

Finally, I'm also seeking a name for this event. As Pat would say - Go

on, hit me with your best shot.

Please forward this message far and wide. Email entries directly to me

ASAP at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Feel free to send multiple entries.

A list of accepted works will be posted on our website -

www.dmacorlando.com.

Thanks in advance,

Rich Grula

Director

DMAC, the Downtown Media Arts Center of Orlando

It's a great compilation too, despite being so few participants. I can hear
traces of Throbbing Gristle, Nurse With Wound, Einsturzende Neubauten. Well
there are things there that remind me of stuff on a whole host of experimental
vinyl albums I still have back in the UK. like stuff on the elephant table
comp, an afflicted man's musica box and three minute symphony...

oh my! what nostalgia - are they available on CD one wonders...

FLUXLIST: wifeswap

2006-01-04 Thread alanfffo

I saw wifeswap on tv when i was back in the uk on me holidays.

if the ABC verion is anything like the one i saw, DON'T do it. (unless the
money is reeeaaalll good - yes i am that cynical!)

i got the impression that the nasty, stupid, ignorant people where played up
and made into false celebrities, encouraged to play on their bad traits, and
the more decent folks, well made to look a little foolish. that's just from
the few episodes that i saw though.

they do a lot of clever editing to make good TV. reality tv is such a
misnomer, but 'cleverly manipulated people and sharp editing of events that
really happened to make scandalously degrading programmes which keep the masses
gripped tv' isn't that snappy a title for a genre.

i don't know, perhaps you should do it and simply refuse to toe the line.

FLUXLIST: email and all that

2005-11-16 Thread alanfffo

Dear Dawg All,

Just a quick note about the problems AOL users have been having, it's not as
easy as it should be to resolve such matters. I have had silly problems with a
number of 'commercial' email providers, especially those providing free
accounts. Telecom Italia actually lost my account once!

A couple of years ago I signed up with Cwazy.co.uk - crap name, excellent
service especially as it was free. 305mb mailbox, spam protection personalised
filters, pop 3 compatability etc etc. ideal for fluxlist admin (which is
basically deleting spam!) cwazy has just become a paid for service but it only
costs £5 a year, what's that, about $7? its very cheap and now you get the
305mb all the spam protection etc and you can chose your email domain name e.g.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (not sure how it works but that's the deal). i think you
get more than one name too.

anyway apart from all the groovy options there is a very high quality of
service, steve the 'boss' actually responds personally to queries and puts
problems right etc. the cwazy server blocked fluxlist as spam, i emailed steve
and he fixed it the same night.

it's worth a look, perhaps as a second email especially now as you don't have
to get stuck with the cwazy tag

Horseman Peom Number 2 (Dedicated to Alan Bowman)

A large horse wears a large bow.

A grand shovel port and grand arc.

A grand port of pellets and an arc ground.

A port of ground grains, old and damp, sold out.

A portrait of grain mounds, viewed as humid, vents abhorrence.

And portraits with monocles filled with grain become humorous as they expect

horror.

At least the portraits have dented monocles on which pleas for grinning

developement police for more chameleons to attend horror films are scrawled.

And mounds of portraits on the bundle of monocles sinking into a putrid

liquid soon intervines in favor of the grimacing police developing a sour

mint paper chameleon as to occupy the films and horror of gribbling bowls.

FLUXLIST: Hysterical Alas of Fluxist - Props

2005-11-03 Thread alanfffo

hi sol,

good point!

anything that would be ultimately 'printable' is fine. i'd like to think this
project as an extension of the original fluxlistmaps, with room to extend them
in any way one sees fit.

personally what i'm interested in is amassing the varying interpretations of
fluxlisters by fluxlisters.

the most obvious way of producing a biog is to write, that's what i'll probably
do. but that doesn't say that it's the best in every case. could be
interesting.

cin cin!

alan

My only suggestion is that you allow for the inclusion of visual

pieces..there are the old maps and other illustrations that would be of

use/interest.

cheers,

Sol.

FLUXLIST: An Historical Atlas of Fluxlist - Proposal

2005-11-02 Thread alanfffo

An Historical Atlas of Fluxlist

Fluxlist has effectively evolved into a small community, an example of the
'global village' at its most, well villagy (sp?). Village elders and village
idiots, friends and vague acquaintances, over the back fence chatters, curtain
twitchers, the odd recluse and a whole host of folks who just go about their
daily business, minding their own and showing up at the odd parish meeting to
put their two pennerth in. On occasion itinerant travellers wander through
offering wares varying from the delightful to the downright dubious. Sometimes
the circus turns up and erects its big-top in the carpark, sometimes hooligans
from neighbouring villages show up and cause fights in the pub. People pass
away and are mourned, people get married, have babies and their neighbours
raise their glasses in acknowledgement. Sometimes new villagers turn up out of
the blue and others up sticks and move away to the city.

The strange thing is that most of the villagers live thousands of miles away
from each other, many have never met any of the others, some have met but a
handful, many can not put a face to the name and most a probably quite unaware
of the existence of some of the remainder.

The idea is this:

To construct an historical and geographical atlas of fluxlist, past and present.

Each current member of Fluxlist is invited to write about another - a
biographical piece placing that person geographically, historically and
contextually into the story of Fluxlist.

These biographical pieces may be based on truth or complete fantasy. Pieces
may vary in length, there being no maximum or minimum enforced and may be
written in any language deemed appropriate by the author. Anecdotes and
stories of bravery, stupidity or particularly successful dinner parties,
artworks and animals, music and missing weekends. When and how they joined
Fluxlist, motives and mysterious sudden disappearances. Notable contributions
to Fluxlist, faux pas and folly. Place of birth, date of birth, date of first
date and outcome. Famous/noted/ignored for... Place of abode, distance
travelled by bicycle, bravelled by tricycle and amount of interest in % of
learning to unicycle.

Information on place of abode, including address, city, state, country etc.

Participants may produce as many 'biographies' as they wish.

Or you could write something completely different.

The aim is document Fluxlist to date, to produce something which records
Fluxlist membership at various levels, not just names but information about the
person, a short biography (as stated) and information about their geographical
location (and their location in time if you so wish).

Entries may be duplicated. In fact duplicate entries, especially about
'active' members, are to be encouraged thus building up a broader view of the
individual.

Eventually the biographies will be used to build up a 'map' of Fluxlist.

The aim is to publish this 'atlas', eventually, as an actual book if costs are
not too prohibitive, and in digital format (PDF and HTML)

Those interested in contributing are kindly requested to let me know within the
next week or so.

Thanks

Alan

I am sending a plea on behalf of Madawg. Apparently AOL has now blocked the

Fluxlist thinking it's spam.

Madawg has requested help in this matter...and apparently there is a form

that needs to be filled out via AOL. He has asked that I light a fire to

have the situation remedied, as he is concerned that all listers with AOL

have been booted. Can I send a progress report along to quell the stirrings

FLUXLIST: FLOORED

2005-10-25 Thread alanfffo

FLOORED - the first part of a non starter story from my blog.

be nice or i'll send part 2!

As the pea-green bunny sidled up to the dimpled butterfly i told that god
damned tangerine frog to close his ugly mouth and keep an eye out for the blue
strawberry.

Hey cool it little crippled buddha man! he replied hollow-eyed from his
hiding place right out in the open.

Watch that bunny you citrus tinged French Lieutenant's lunch! I hissed from
my perch on Cleopatra's breast. He's already had it away with the reindeer, he
left only the antlers underneath that apple there!

Did you know that the reindeer in Spain are usually difficult to explain?
ventured my wide-mouthed watchman. Out in the open he was exposed to the sun,
accepting his cheque from the gutter pressman in the gutter he put his trousers
back on. The heat had, I feared, given our position away as there was a strong
smell of chicken coming from the direction of the obvious french gentleman who
was cowering on a plum leaf, staring at entirely the wrong rabbit.

Shut up and watch that bunny man! I whispered in a shout.

Hey! Spare us the Cuttering remarks, for under this Killing Moon I am ready,
even Crocodiles couldn't move me from my task. I'll watch the rabbit you just
watch the butterfly!

And with that he tripped the waiter.

just to be extra sure that we're all singing off the same hymnsheet here,

Don is actually wearing glasses, a hat, trousers and is standing on one side of

and to clarify,

Ken is the one with the glasses on with long sleeve shirt, standing on

the point of my name dropping was simply (and i don't think i did it very well)
to get acros the fact that in my expereience the people we know to have been
involved in fluxus, don't really believe that it exists. it is way too vague
in all of its complexity.

it is a whole bunch of other people who are interested in applying the word
fluxus to their work, philosophy, lifestyle etc.

Re: RE: FLUXLIST: FLUXUS AND THE PLASTIC ARTS

2005-05-15 Thread alanfffo

i read all three bits!

a lull in my ADD or something else?

i learned something

allan = 48

alan = 38

therefore l = 10

tada

perhaps..

anyway, thanks cecil for the full text and allan for your take on it. it's a
very interesting area indeed.

however, (oh mercy, here he goes agaian..!),

i still think that it is important that we define fluxus 'now'. i am not a
fluxus artist but i learned this the difficult way. i don't wish to be a
fluxus artist, but i do wish to be considered as one who works in a way which
can be likened to that thing called fluxus. i no longer feel the need to want
to be associated with Fluxus, which i once did.

i have had the great fortune to hang out with ay-o, emmett, alison, ben etc. i
don't KNOW them, they're not my friends - i know i have the respect of at least
ay-o and emmett because of time we have spent NOT talking about fluxus (short
times!), the times we spent drinking red wine, the times i helped emmett cross
roads in new york, the times ay-o went for coffee and always brought me a
cookie! those time are so very special to me, and i namedrop blatantly here
and proudly for someone who usually cannot tolerate such a thing.

but the fact is that because of the time spent in fluxcompany i came to
realise that i was not a fluxus artist, my work is not fluxus. it is heavily
inspired by and borrows from 'fluxus' pieces, it has been criticised and
praised by 'Fluxus' artists. but it is not fluxus.

try to imagine being in a room with ben vautier, emmett williams, ay-o, jean
dupuy, philip corner, yoko ono, nam june paik, takako saito, serge III, ken
friedman, dick higgins, alison knowles, yoshi wada, geoff hendricks, larry
miller, george brecht, etc, etc, etc.

work out from there what fluxus is! and then look at your on work - what's the
criteria?

i still think we have to work on defining/redefining fluxus, at least to get a
Fluxlist definition of Fluxus.

pain i know! but noone ever gets back on this. you can't all be searching to
be a bit 'fluxus' for the cool factor. that much is very obvious -

what is fluxus
