Re: FLUXLIST: Mesostics

2006-05-19 Thread Rod Stasick

On 2006 May 19, at 3:46 PM, Allan Revich wrote:

The point that I am trying to make is not that I am right or that
you (or anybody else) is wrong. The point is that the beauty in
Fluxus is that it thrives on diversity and difference rather than
on dogma and rigidity. I think that Cage was a genius and that his
methods, means, and maybe madness were all beautiful. Getting hung
up on pointless minutiae is a waste of time and energy.

I have no problem with the way that anybody here decides to write. We
can all be as totally goofball as possible...and we can give any kind
of name that we want to our writings. BUT it is not pointless
minutiae to point out that a form of writing is NOT what it claims
to be. If we decide to go in that
direction, then I'm going to call this text that you're reading a
haiku - OK, so let's call it that - after all, this is Fluxlist and
we're just a bunch of CrAzIeS influenced by Fluxus and we're all not
hyper-technical here. If people want to put a bunch of words on a
page and capitalize any letters to spell out some word they want,
then call it something else - you know...uh,Fluxmiddles
or...textmiddles or...whatever...but they are NOT mesostics.

Why does this matter? Because, by incorrectly calling something a
mesostic, you're advancing
the lazy-mindedness that so many people possess as well as
perpetuating an untruth for no real reason other than convenience. To
stop asking questions is death to the soul, death to the imagination,
and death to progress - whether personal or social.

To answer your question; no, I don’t suggest that you “follow this
guy's examples even if they don't fit with what Cage stated”. I
suggest that you accept the work of other people as inspired by
whomever or whatever they suggest was their inspiration.

This guy's statement implies that he's not willing to listen to any
criticism -

criticism is not welcome. You are asked to do something better.
What is this better? To accept that he was influenced by someone
else, I can accept this...BUT to incorrectly represent that person
when he shows you an incorrect example of THAT person's work is, at
best, a misunderstanding and, at worst, a lie. Maybe I'll start a
website that says that John Cage said that, in music, anything
goes- oh, wait, I think some people have already beaten me to that.

Your suggestion that I accept other people's work and their inspiration:
I will certainly listen to what they have to say, but if a guy puts
up a webpage to tell
me that 3 + 2 = 7 and that he'll accept no criticisms (Bill O'Reilly:
SHUT UP! SHUT UP, I SAY!)

then I most definitely will have something to say about it.

What does the place of birth of Maciunas have to do with John Cage
or Mesostic poetry anyway? Do you need me to tell you that you are
very clever? OK. You are very clever. The sources that I have
located to date suggest that he was born in Lithuania, moved from
there to Germany, and from Germany to the United States. If you
have more accurate information you could probably share it without
losing any of your cleverness.

My comment was in reference to this statement of yours:

2) Don’t get so hung up on minutiae Rod. This is the Fluxus
Fluxlist after all, lighten up. If you feel the need to get hyper-
technical than you also need to accept that the word “mesostic” is a
neologism in (inconsistent) use by a barely significant percentage of
English speakers. As such there is no accepted definition.

In other words: Oh well, so what if it's wrong. It's just minutiae.
I'm just hyper-technical by pointing out a fact. OK, so let's just
say that Maciunas wasn't born in Lithuania. According to your
reasoning, and like I said above, we're just Fluxus folks and we
shouldn't concern ourselves with such trivialities should we?

...and there's your reasoning that because a barely significant
percentage of English speakers are familiar with or actually use
something that it's OK to be imprecise because there's no accepted
definition is something I just don't buy. The accepted definition
is Cage's definition because no matter how many other variations
occurred thru the uses of the average unknown artist or the
heavyweight variations by well-knowns, he still made it clear
throughout his life what the two forms were (the 100% version, he
adopted later). The texts done by others were still *variations* -
Mac Low's Diastics to give one example. At least Mac Low didn't
call them mesostics because he knew that they weren't.

XOOX

This is a filmic-project that I started in the early
'80-s.' It was simply, a year's documentation of the firing
of the noon-day gun in Halifax. I was much more concerned
with the development of a ritual process of being in
position to film this moment day-after-day for one-year,
than with the film itself. I was attending graduate-school
when this project unfolded, so I would have to excuse myself
from my teaching-duties or conversations every day in order
to attend to a different moment. After a while, the retired
legionnaire who fired the cannon became accustomed to seeing
me make my way up to the fortress every day; occasionally
he would deliberately fire the cannon a little early or
late, just to mess with my ritual (and all the similar
events in town that were structured on hearing the noon-day
gun). Rather than have all these super8 outakes just run
end-to-end, I cut them up into fixed lengths (multiples of
10 frames I think it was...) and crudely spliced them
together in my studio. You'll notice scratches, dirt and
jumping frames. That 'decisive moment' is perpetually
distended and dislocated. Until now, the expense of making
prints (16mm blow-up was the plan) prevented me from
'finishing' the film (and in some ways it wasn't necessary).
I had the film transfered to video at the local supermarket
and then I digitized and colorized it at work. You can
download the first and second parts of this miniature (60x45
pixel) Quicktime film now.

Mitakorak silikti!

Nice... Japanese video on a Hebrew website! (I can actually read the Hebrew,
but have no idea what the Japanese is saying).

Mitakorak Silikti!

... is now stuck in my head, playing over and over and over and over again.

To start your days off on the right foot:

‘Tarzan’ chimp celebrates 74th birthday in SoCal desert
Monday, April 10, 2006
(04-10) 11:42 PDT Palm Springs, Calif. (AP)

“Cheeta the chimp, star of a dozen “Tarzan” movies in the 1930s and 1940s,
celebrated his 74th birthday with sugar-free cake. Although healthy and
active, Cheeta is diabetic.

“He had a good time. The party went real good,” said keeper Dan Westfall,
operator of the primate sanctuary Creative Habitats and Enrichment for
Endangered and Threatened Apes — or CHEETA. Representatives from a Spanish
film festival also showed up for Sunday’s party to present Cheeta with the
first award of his career — an International Comedy Film Festival of
Peniscola prize. Cheeta has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World
Records as the world’s oldest chimp. Chimps rarely live past the age of 40
in the wild, but can reach 60 in captivity. The graying, 150-pound Cheeta,
one of six primates at the desert sanctuary 110 miles east of Los Angeles,
is very active and “he still has every tooth in his head,” Westfall said
Monday.

Asked about his typical day, Westfall said one of Cheeta’s favorite
activities is riding around with him in the car. He also likes to paint,
what Westfall calls “ape-stract” pieces that are sold to raise money for
the nonprofit sanctuary. Westfall adopted Cheeta in 1992 from his uncle
Tony Gentry, an animal trainer who worked in Hollywood and obtained Cheeta
from Africa in the 1930s.”

FLUXLIST: Karen Eliot

2006-05-15 Thread Allan Revich

Karen Eliot is a name that refers to an individual human being who can
be anyone. The name is fixed, the people using it aren't. The purpose of many
different people using the same name is to create a situation for which no one
in particular is responsible and to practically examine western philosophical
notions of identity,
individuality, originality,
value and truth.

Anyone
can become Karen Eliot simply by adopting the name, but they are only Karen
Eliot for the period in which they adopt the name. Karen Eliot was
materialised, rather than born, as an open context in the summer of 1985. When
one becomes Karen Eliot one's previous existence consists of the acts other
people have undertaken using the name. When one becomes Karen Eliot one has non
family, no parents, no birth. Karen Eliot was not born, s/he was materialised
from social forces, constructed as a means of entering the shifting terrain
that circumscribes the 'individual' and society.

FLUXLIST: OSU Rare Books temporary closing

2006-05-15 Thread John M. Bennett

The Rare Books and Manuscripts Library of The Ohio State
University Libraries (OSUL) will be closed from May 30th until
July 10th, 2006.

The Main Library at OSUL will undergo a $100 million renovation beginning
in Autumn 2006. In preparation for the renovation, the Main Library
will be emptied and Rare Books will be the first unit to vacate the
building, a process that has been going on for over a year. Rare Books
finds it untenable to operate its reading room and reference services,
and conduct the final stages of its move simultaneously.

On July 10th, Rare Books will reopen in its temporary home at
the Ohio State University Archives at 2700 Kenny Road, Columbus, Ohio
43210-1046. It is anticipated that Rare Books will be in this
temporary location until Autumn 2009.

Please feel free to contact us on or after July 10th regarding
reference requests.

Please address concerns to Geoffrey D. Smith at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or

...my German name 'Heinrich' was translated into 'Henri'
just after my arrival in Paris. I had to resign myself to it and,
finally, name myself thus in this country,
for the word 'Heinrich' did not appeal to the French ear and
the French make everything in the world nice and easy for themselves.
They were also incapable of pronouncing the name 'Henri Heine'

and for most people my name is Mr. Enri Enn;
many abbreviate this to an 'Enrienne,' and some called me Mr. Un rien.
