FLUXLIST: research requests = nietzschejarrymaciunasnauman
to whomever may be mildly knowledgable (or at least interested enough to respond): i am looking for info about possible connections (not that they are that far-fetched) between certain literary perspectives and fluxus. specifically between literature that embodies self-mockery, self-directed laughter, the carnivalesque/ grotesque (such as nietzsche and... ) an emphasis on lower-body humor, concerning shit, etc. (such as rabelais [via bakhtin], a.jarry [merdre], duchamp [r.mutt's fountain], maciunas [his excreta fluxorum], etc.) and I would like to focus on one fluxus member how about... was bruce nauman a fluxus member ? (unofficially of course) but in all sincerety, what was his place in fluxus? nauman (I have been told) said of "five marching men" that the figures depicted were inspired by the puppetlike characters of the Ubu plays, but does anyone have a source for this? and what of the the carnivalesque in naumans "Clown Torture" ? if anyone has any sources or comments or links (theoretical links or html) please do not wait to fashion the perfect polished response the more immediate (a few moments of reflection, or reviewing your college notes or dusting off your dissertation or whatever,- wouldnt hurt though) as I am currently writing and have met a bit of a block (and in the spirit of george maciunas), I am not afraid to ask others for their input. any resources, thoughts, ideas,? scott rigby the basekamp 215.592.7288 723 chestnut st second floor phila, pa 19106 www.basekamp.com written thursday, 16 march 2000

BTW - If that Lightworks issue has come out now (it was to be the Ray Johnson special) then can someone please let me know so I can order one. After all $1500 dollars is not too much money if several people save up over a short period and pool their money. Jay, perhaps this will suggest a strategy to you. cheers, Sol.
Re: FLUXLIST: slick magazines
I'm not interested in starting a magazine. I have a novel out with The Fiction Collective Two, and a collection of poetry due out this fall. I just find most of the writing in Bomb to be mundane, and without edge. The art is another thing. jay Sol Nte wrote: Saul wrote: Bomb started in 1984 or 5 with $1500 dollars and a bunch of artists and writers who wanted to speak for themselves -- that is still its spirit Which just goes to show that anyone can do that and it not so much the money that's important as the quality of writing. FLUXLIST: Grotius on cyberspace
Heiko asks about parallels between the writings of Hugo Grotius (1583-1645) and writings on cyberspace. There is a large and growing body of discourse on the culture of cyberspace. This includes considering issues of ethics and law. Because cyberspace is an international space, the issues reflected in Grotius's writings are particularly relevant. It's likely that someone has applied Grotius's ideas to cyberspace, but I'm not sure who or in what context. I was a bit uncertain what the question was. If Heiko will state it more clearly, I may be able to give a better answer. --Ken Friedman --

Sol Charleton Burch. Email? I'd venture to guess not. Last time I wrote to Charleton was back in 1993 or so. I'm pretty sure he never finished the Ray Johnson issue. At the time he was taking care of his kid and household and was not really planning on being active or so was my impression then. Reed Sol Nte wrote: Jay wrote: Bomb is to inside for me. FLUXLIST: In The Spirit of Fluxus
$80 is too much to pay for that catalogue. In the first place it's not a very good catalogue and in the second place if you can order the Dick Higgins book from Printed Matter, that's what you should do. The adress is Printed Matter 77 Wooster St. New York,NY 10012 tel: 212 925 0325 fax: 212 925 0464. Also they do take credit card orders over the phone. Reed Altemus

Ken, as well as others - Wasn't the essay also more recently anthologized in the book of his essays titled Modernism Since Postmodernism (it did have some of his essays on intermedia) that was published in 1998 by San Diego State University Press?? I think so, but my copy is buried and I can not check - you can check out the book info on line at: http://www-rohan.sdsu.edu/dept/press/newtitles.html Even if it does not have the specific essay that you are looking for the book is well worth having and the cost is quite reasonable at $15.00 USD.
