[FOSS Nepal] SFD Celebration this year
Dear Fossians: Free Software day is near, and no doubt this day means a lot for us. We, foss-nepal, have showed the entire world that we love free software and we celebrate it like we do celebrate our religion by making our mark by winning it 3 times in a row. It has been quite long since we haven’t celebrated it in a mega and unified way. Hence this brings the need of reviving ourselves and getting ready for upcoming free software day. Few fossians amongst us once gathered for coffee and this idea came up as result of the informal discussion. We finally ended up with a rigid plan for a greater and combined event. Rather than doing it separately in each and every college/community, we can actually do it in combined way, under one roof, together and make it grand success. Beyond the event we also need to implant a sense of unification and pursue FOSS agenda deeper into Industry, academia and Policy in making. So, from this mailing list we are making an announcement/commitment that we are planning a big common event. As being advocate of free society ourselves, we also appeal and request all of you to join us with your idea, initiation and contribution making this event a success. So far the informal coffee meetings have been confined to following members: Avinash Kundaliya Abhinav Jha Ankur Sharma Chandan Goopta Saroj Dhakal P.S: Lets keep this thread rolling, and organize a initiation meeting soon (we would love to present our thought process and event outline as we envisioned it to the community ASAP) -- Chandan Gooptaw (http://www.sparrowmailapp.com/?sig) -- -- FOSS Nepal mailing list: foss-nepal@googlegroups.com http://groups.google.com/group/foss-nepal To unsubscribe, e-mail: foss-nepal+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com Mailing List Guidelines: http://wiki.fossnepal.org/index.php?title=Mailing_List_Guidelines Community website: http://www.fossnepal.org/ --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups FOSS Nepal group. I will need atleast 15 people to start the class. I could do a quick 1 week training if the group already has programming experience in any language and would only like a hands-on practical session. As intermediate addition I could also do a 1 week Django training as that is becoming extremely popular tool and lots of out-sourcing jobs in it. But he can´t see any of the information displayed on his computer monitor. “Disability is just diversity of the human race,” he said of his profound blindness. Born in a rural village where nobody else was blind, the 28-year-old is a major inspiration today to a niche IT community quietly growing across Nepal in the last 10 years. First coined globally in the 90s, FOSS promotes the use of computer software that is both free to download and use, and can be modified to suit an individual user´s needs. Unlike expensive market dominators - such as Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Word - these programs have no pricetag or copyright licenses preventing their evolution. Hempal Shrestha, founder of FOSS Nepal, said its local active fan base is relatively small - in the thousands - and mostly comprised IT professionals, fanatics and students. Those participating unknowingly, however, are innumerable. Mozilla´s web browser and email software, Firefox and Thunderbird, are two widely downloaded examples of FOSS. For Pradeep Mahato, operator of the Bishwanath Institute of Computer (BIC) in Chitwan that opened this year, the founding “flossophy” (philosophy) behind it is “freedom”. Mahato, who teaches his students at BIC solely in FOSS, said the movement is all about “freedom to use, freedom to share, and freedom to modify”. Of course, for a country like Nepal, where piracy of software and illegal downloading is rampant, the “free” is this statement almost seems like a non-issue. Yet its followers say FOSS offers an alternative to illegal activity; giving poorer Nepalese access to more programs while encouraging creativity in the IT community. For instance, Mahato uses a version of the FOSS operating system, Linux, on his personal laptop that´s modified to display and navigate purely in Hindi and Nepali. Sharma also uses Linux, Firefox, and a FOSS screen reader for the visually impaired called Nonvisual Desktop Access (NVDA). “FOSS is especially important for the visually impaired in Nepal because most of them are from poor backgrounds,” said Sharma. “Having access to IT for reading is a big challenge. It´s beyond their expectations. FOSS makes it accessible and affordable for them.” Mahato said other benefits to his 50 students include software that´s free of computer viruses and general cost cutting. “They are always trying to make their custom desktop interface unique from other Linux desktops,” he said of his students. Yet there are setbacks to FOSS. Many of these programs require training to install and learn, and modifying software is something best left to those with IT skills. Some programs, like Linux affiliated software, are often incompatible with non-FOSS operating systems used widely, like Windows, making file sharing complicated. Shrestha, Mahato, and Sharma will be just some of those celebrating at IT events held across the world this Saturday for Software Freedom Day. Yet they said FOSS has a long way to go before it makes it into the mainstream as a common business and personal practice. “The business and government sectors need to be strong. They shouldn´t be using pirated software when they could save so much money with FOSS,” said Shrestha. Some NGOs, like the United Nations´ Nepalese wing, have been moving towards widespread implementation of this software within their administration. “The first advocates of this need to really put our efforts together and make it happen for a developing country,” said Sharma. Sharma is today dedicated to teaching other visually impaired Nepalese how to use NVDA via his non-profit Pokhara training centre. “When I went blind, I felt like I was the only person in the world facing that challenge. People were negative because they´d never seen people like me doing these things. “I made a decision to change that. The world is not limited. It is so important to encourage social initiatives that really empower people.” Published on 2012-09-15 07:00:23 -- With kind regards, Hempal Shrestha FOSS Nepal Community Putalisadak, Near Share Market, Kathmnadu, Nepal +977-1-4261459

System Admin Concepts in GNU/Linux source: http://linuxcandy.com/2012/03/introduction-to-system-admin-concepts-in-gnulinux.html Most of the GNU/Linux users may be knowing shell program. Infact GNU/Linux Operating system has started it’s journey with command line interface. Because of that some people even felt that GNU/Linux is only for command line activities and not for visually attractive GUIs. FOSS community around the globe has removed that misconception and a great deal of improvement has made in terms of GUI (Graphical User Interface) experience. Unlike proprietary world, GNU/Linux offers several GUI options like GNOME, KDE, XFCE, etc. Based on the hardware and software requirments, you can choose the appropriate X Window System. XFCE is a light weight Interface while GNOME and KDE are beautiful and rich GUIs. But even when GUI is there, the world of command line is predominant among the System Administrators. There are many reasons for the upperhand of CLI (command line interface) over GUI . The main reason is the availability of hundreds of powerful commands in GNU/Linux. It is not mandatory to learn all of these commands, but a knowledge on a basic set of 30 to 50 commands will give lot of flexibility while using GNU/Linux Operating System. A user should understand how to go through documentations and use it with correct syntax for his/her needs. In this series of articles we will try to simplify the learning of CLI and its tools. If you are a user of one of the GNU/Linux flavoures, there will be an option to open Terminal. In Ubuntu you can open it from Accessories. In Fedora you can open it by right clicking on the desktop and choose terminal. Just find out how to open terminal in your flavour. Go to the different options in terminal and familiarize with it. You can change the font, background colour, open another terminal in the same window, etc. Once you are done with these experiments, concentrate on your shell prompt. Shell is a program between you and kernel. There are different types of Shell Programmes like sh, bash, ksh, csh, zsh, etc.. Thanks to the freedom of enhancement in Free Software. *So what is your Shell?* Shell is a programme running in the operating system, interfacing the user. It accepts and interprets the commands and execute the same with the help of Kernel. There are different ways to find out your shell. Type any of the below commands and you can find your shell. 1) echo $SHELL 2) echo $0 You can choose any shell which is available in your system by just typing the shell name. Most of the shells support all basic commands. It may have some difference in terms of formatting, history of commands, etc. When you opened the terminal it takes you to the home directory of your user ID. what is home directory ? And how will I find out where am I now? A user’s home directory is intended to contain that user’s files; including text documents, music, pictures or videos, etc. It may also include their configuration files of preferred settings for any software they have used there and might have tailored to their liking: web browser bookmarks, favorite desktop wallpape and themes, passwords to any external services accessed via a given software, etc. The user can install executable software in this directory, but it will only be available to users with permission to this directory. The home directory can be organized further with the use of sub-directories. Refer Wikipedia page (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Home_directory https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Home_d%20irectory) for more details. From shell how can we find out our present working directory? 1 ) pwd (print working directory/present working directory). Eg :- rs@rs-ThinkPad-T400:~$ pwd

[FOSS Nepal] Freedom Box, your control over your data
Do you own your data on internet ? Do you have control over them? Have faceboook deleted your pics when you delete them from your profile ? well, we have lots of questions like this. Google, facebook etc know more about us than we know about ourselves. Heres a concept of FreedomBox which will give you control over your data and what you want to do with you data. Besides you can also control whom you want your data to be shared with and whom not with. The concept was coined by Richard Man Stallman.. Jonas Smedegaard has been developing on it. On Thu, Sep 1, 2011 at 1:30 PM, C2 pal.he...@gmail.com wrote: Did you change the upload file limit (upload_max_filesize)in php.ini ? You should probably do that. Thanks to the hint. That was the problem. Description: Error: POST Content-Length of 91 bytes exceeds the limit of -1048576 bytes in Unknown on line 0, referer: http://localhost/phpmyadmin/index.php Problem and solution: On some 32bit systems PHP will take the memory settings like 2000M or 2G and convert it to the integer number of bytes by not performing a boundary check. A number starting at 2G or 2048M will be -2147483648 bytes then. Some PHP versions cap this at the top, so it won't go into negative numbers (that is the 32 bit signed integer limit). If you want to achieve the maximum possible number of bytes on such a system then, use *2147483647*. This is equal to two gigabytes minus one byte. Alternatively if you need to deal with large data, consider a 64bit system. Additionally you should consider the following: According to PHP Manual the memory_limit setting is the more important one. If it does not offer enough memory, the post-data size-check then will pass, but PHP would not have enough memory to actually handle the post-data. You will get another error than, that the memory exceeded. So when you configure your PHP, take care that post_max_size is smaller than memory_limit. In your example the memory_limit is 128M, so it can not process post-data of a size larger than ~128 Megabyte. So fixing the limits my problem is solved :) Cheers... ... this is seriously irritating. after going through blogs, stackoverflow and others I couldnot find solution to this problem. Or may be I am missing a simple thing. I was uploading about 8 gb dumped file to a database and it got interrupted due to system restart. after then I am unable to login to phpmyadmin. the login redirects me to http://localhost/phpmyadmin/index.php . the login credentials are correct. I am not sure if the interruption of upload made a difference. I can log in to cli mysql and do everything. but not through browser. Re: [FOSS Nepal] OpenDNS
Plus other drawbacks too :D 1. privacy concerns -- they track every website/domain you visit 2. unknown domain redirection -- they redirect unknown domain lookups to search engines. This breaks some applications as they expect DNS queries to return domain not found instead. [foss-nepal] weird problem with wired net connection

Re: [foss-nepal] mount failed.. ubuntu 10.04
mounting was not a problem. The problem was that it was showing error message (as I wrote in the begining of this thread) while booting. But ubuntu was showing and detecting those partitions without any problem. After I deleted those /dos and /windows lines from etc/fstab now een the error message is not showing. ~chandan On Mon, May 10, 2010 at 10:23 AM, Manish Regmi regmi.man...@gmail.comwrote: On Sun, May 9, 2010 at 11:40 PM, chandan gupta gupta.chand...@gmail.com wrote: that didnt work out. NTFS fsck is not available yet. so you need to run windows and check perform check disks. why are you trying to manually mount filesystems. ubuntu 10.04 should automatically detect and mount them. --- regards Manish Regmi http://manish-cs.blogspot.com http://ext2read.sf.net -- FOSS Nepal mailing list: foss-nepal@googlegroups.com http://groups.google.com/group/foss-nepal To unsubscribe, e-mail: foss-nepal+unsubscr...@googlegroups.comfoss-nepal%2bunsubscr...@googlegroups.com Mailing List Guidelines: http://wiki.fossnepal.org/index.php?title=Mailing_List_Guidelines Community website: http://www.fossnepal.org/ -- FOSS Nepal mailing list: foss-nepal@googlegroups.com http://groups.google.com/group/foss-nepal To unsubscribe, e-mail: foss-nepal+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com Mailing List Guidelines: http://wiki.fossnepal.org/index.php?title=Mailing_List_Guidelines Community website: http://www.fossnepal.org/
