Re: Assessing a document's reading level
So far as I know, there aren't any FM plug-ins that do this, but bullfighter at http://www.fightthebull.com/bullfighter.asp is great for Word files (and FM saved as .rtf). You have to make a few adjustments, for instance if you don't end bullet list items with periods so they're viewed as sentences, but otherwise, it's useful. Especially useful for giving to non-writers. ;- ) Art On 10/24/06, Rene Stephenson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All, Does anyone know of a tool or plugin or FrameScript for FM that can assess reading level of a document? page numbering
Hi all, Is there a way to override the page numbering for a single page in a document in Frame 7.0? I'm working on a revision to a manual. In this revision, I need to add new information to a chapter that is 176 pages long. The new information needs to go after page 31, which means that not only would this page be included in the revision, but all the subsequent pages would have to be added, as well, because even thought the information is the same, the page numbers all shifted by one. I'd rather not print 146 pages when I only need to make one page of actual content change. So, is there a way to add a page and call it 31-a, without causing all the other page numbers to change? I tried to search the archives on the FrameUsers website, but it appears the site is temporarily down. Thanks, dave. -- If you're having trouble getting inspired about something, it's probably because you're temporarily lacking inspiration. That's what you need. Conditional text page problem
All, We are making our first venture into conditional text, with two files of three conditions per file. (FrameMaker 7.1 with current patches, XP sp2) The main problem so far is that pages from a condition of longer text remain as blanks when a condition with shorter content is applied. For example, when the 10 page condition B is changed to the 5 page condition A, condition A text contains 5 blank pages from the longer B. My colleague who is working this has so far not figured out how to easily apply condition A without the blank B pages. By our sense, the pages should be removed along with the page text when A is applied without requiring further finagling. I vaguely recall something related to this on the list recently, but I was unable to locate it and the site database is down this morning. Can't Save a 7.0 Book file in 7.2
Hello, I recently upgraded to 7.2, running XP. I opened a book file I had (originally created in FM 7.0), made some changes and then tried to save it but receive the message: The document was saved to a temporary file, but Framemaker can't rename it to have the correct name. The newer version has an odd suffix. I have not tried to change the name of the book and the suffix is .book Google had one item about this, where one person said it was related to anti-virus software (highly unlikely in my opinion) and then the original poster came back to say that it appeared to have something to do with accessing the file over his company's network. My file is checked out from SourceSafe, if that has anything to do with it, but??? Can anyone shed some light on this problem? RE: How do I add a Tab to a Marker using Glossary
I suspect that you're seeing the result of FrameMaker's handling of tab stops. I'm guessing that the paragraph tag that is being used for the collected glossary items lacks a defined tab stop position. Without one or more defined tab positions (and the default is to have none), you can type as many tab characters as you want (manually or via an escape code in a dialog box), and FrameMaker won't budge so much as a single point. Open the Paragraph Designer from your glossary file and make sure that the Basic properties sheet shows a tab defined at an appropriate location. My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel. Phantom RGB objects in 2-color PDF
I originally posted this to the FrameMaker for OS X group, but I have now refined the problem description after a few hours frustrating work... FrameMaker 7.0 for Mac, AdobePS driver 8.8.0(301), PDF PPD, Acrobat 6 Pro Distiller settings, custom, Press default plus leave color unchanged, no image compression One Pantone spot plus grayscale, job must print as 2-color process. Preflighting in Acrobat Pro 6 indicates the presence of phantom RGB objects on top edge of page. These are invisible and cannot be selected with object touch-up tool, but are highlighted by double-clicking in preflight window. If I start with a completely blank document that contains one character, preflighting indicates no phantom RGB objects. If I define Pantone 652 CVU as a spot color, set color view to show that and black, with white as cutout, and apply the color to the single character in the document, the PDF then indicates a phantom RGB object on the top page edge when preflighted in Acrobat 6 Pro and indicates the need for five plates. This is crazy: what is going on? If you're out there today, Dov, I'd really appreciate your insight on this - or anyone else with color experience in FrameMaker. -- Steve ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.

The tables structure is: TableType | TableHeading | TableRow | TableCell | Para --- context rule to fire here | TableCell | Para TableBody | TableRow | TableCell | Para | TableCell | Para (etc) The problem is that there seems to be no way to formulate a context rule that identifies the para element shown above, because although it's enclosing cell would fire a unique {first} rule, the rule must actually be in the para element's rule set, and there's no way to say 'if your parent is first, then...'. Or is there? Clearly, changing the table structure so that it used a different structure might help, but there's too much existing material for that.
Re: Master pages refuse to be applied: RESOLVED
I previously posted about some really weird things to do with master pages that apparently 'refused' to be applied. I thought folks might be interested in the reasons for what turned out to be, not one illusion, but two. I was suffering from two 'problems': 1. In one part of the book, the body pages apparently refused to accept a change to the height of the main text frame on the master page. 2. Some pages appeared to 'reject' the master pages by refusing to display a page number. Issue 1 was caused by a weirdness to do with the page zoom. Although all parts of the book had the same page size and the same zoom setting, without my noticing it, the problem section (the Preface) was not actually displaying the entire page to the top, leading to the visual illusion that the main text flow was the wrong height. Only a careful comparison of the vertical ruler revealed this. I have no idea of its cause, but dropping the zoom by 5% for all parts of the book 'cured' the 'problem'. Issue 2 was a little more subtle. Again in the preface, the right page footer contained a Running H/F and a Roman page number. The Running H/F was not actually used in the Preface, and contained one blank space. On one page, and one page only, xxvii (which should have been a clue), the right-tab stop settings of the footer interacted to prevent the page number being displayed at all, leading to the illusion that the master page was not being applied. A small adjustment to the tab stop preceding the page number restored it. Moral: things often 'aint what they seem.
Re: Newbie Question re: Translation Work Process
Lin Surasky wrote: OpenOffice wasn't as buggy as Word. We could output the Frame content directly to XML which the translation tool can deal with. However, can we get it back into Frame cleanly? Yes. This is what we do (but see caution at the end): In a structured Frame binary file, with an XML application, which round-trips successfully (ie you can save as XML and open the xml file through Frame + the apprpriate Structured Application with no changes or losses), export the file and translate. Then import the result. Easy. You might wish to add an attribute such as xml:lang to some or all of your elements. You can use this to enable language-specific spell-checking in Frame, and also as an identifier to tell other post-processors what they are dealing with. Caution 1: If you are using XML as a 'native' save format for Frame files that don't have a Structure Application (DTD, read-write rules, etc), you are on your own. It should just work, but we don't use that process. Caution 2: This may not work well for languages outside Frame's character sets, because the result may not render properly in Frame. I don't know enough (ie anything) about how Frame renders Japanese/Chinese from xml utf-8-encoded files to guess at what happens, and I'm sure that other writing systems (Arabic, for example) are not supported. best -- Mark Barratt Text Matters Information design: we help explain things using language | design | systems | process improvement __ phone +44 (0)118 986 8313 email [EMAIL PROTECTED] skype mark_barratt web http://www.textmatters.com ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.
RE: page numbering
Here's one direct (i.e. brute force) approach: If page 131 is in the middle of a chapter, split the chapter into two files, one that ends with page 131 and one that starts with page 132. Set the pagination for the first half to Delete empty pages and set the pagination for the second half to start on Next available (which option is only available from the book window) or Left if you're working with duplex pages. Change the numbering properties of the second half from Continue from previous file to start with 132. If page 131 is already the last page in a chapter you skip the step if splitting the chapter. Then just make the new content a separate file that you'll include in the book between the two halves. Modify this file's master page(s) to use a two-part page number, one half of which will be the regular page number system variable that you'll set to use numeric format beginning with a or A, and the other half of which is the text string 131 (or 131- if you prefer). You can either enter that text directly on the master page, or use the $volnum system variable if you're not already using it. My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel. Converting unstructured to structured FrameMaker
I have a large project coming up that involves converting unstructured FrameMaker docs to structured FrameMaker (7.1 on Windows). Does anyone know of any helpful websites or documentation to get through this as quickly and efficiently as possible? Thanks.
