RE: See all open markers?
Hi Nancy, CudSpan's MarkerWorker plug-in might help you. It creates a list of markers which you can edit and then re-insert into your document. It's free. http://www.freeframers.org/freeware/cud/ Best regards Winfried -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Nancy Allison Sent: Monday, January 12, 2009 10:34 PM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: See all open markers? It galls me to admit this, but I really appreciate the ability to see all the hidden markers in a Word file. It enables me to see all the Index markers, for example, and quickly correct inconsistencies. Is there any clever way of doing this in Frame? Or in a MIF file? For example, I think a chapter of my book is skimpy on markers. I can generate a List of Markers and look at the page numbers; then I can go to the document and look at the pages that don't have any markers to see if they should. How delightful it would be to simply page through the document, noting the absence of markers once all markers (or, better yet, just Index markers) had been displayed? Has anyone made my daydream a reality? ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as wr...@tycoint.com. Send list messages to fram...@lists.frameusers.com. Re: Table won't roll to next page
Deirdre Reagan wrote: I fixed it! I autoconnected the first page to the second page and the table on the last page miraculously rolled over to a new page. I don't know why that worked, but I'm glad it did! It worked because text frames that have a flow tag and autoconnection cause FM to automatically create more pages when text reaches the bottom of the frames. (That's part of the reason it's called a flow -- content is a continuous stream, although it is visible only in discrete frames and pages.) Text frames that have no flow connection or tag exist in isolation and do not cause more pages to be created when they contain too much text. (Note re terminology: it is actually frames, not pages, that are connected.) The only remaining don't know is how the disconnected frame got created in the first place. It's possible that someone deliberately used the Special Add Disconnected Pages command, thereby foiling FM's beautiful engineering with their manual intervention. (Unlike with MS Weird, it's better to let FM do its own thing ;-) On the other hand, it is remarkably easy to accidentally create a flowless, disconnected text frame by selecting a normal frame (CTRL-click) and moving it while the CTRL key is still pressed. A mouse-stutter that moves the frame even one pixel and back again is enough to duplicate the frame (minus flow tag) directly on top of the original. If content happens to end on that page, you will see the end-of-flow marker on the connected frame, while also seeing such a marker on the disconnected (disconcerting!) frame on top of it. But if your content doesn't end on the connected page, it can be very mystifying indeed. OK! Now I think I have a related problem. I have three pages of figures, followed by a table, followed by three figures, followed by a table. Re: Table won't roll to next page
Deirdre, Do you have a working chapter or a template without flow problems? If so, it may be easier to: - Save the working chapter as a new file. - Clean all the content out of the working chapter. Crl-a to select all, then Ctrl-x to cut. - Copy in the content from your problem file. - Put your cursor in the first flow, Ctrl-a then Ctrl-x. - Swap to the new file, and paste. Ctrl-v. - Back in the original, go to the next chunk of content and repeat, pasting that into the correct position. - Continue until your original source file is empty. - In the new file, import variables from your source file and tags and stuff if you need them. DON'T import the page layouts. - DON'T save the now-empty original, so you have a backup copy, just in case. This is likely to be easier than trying to fix something if you're not sure what's broken or how to repair it. Art Art Campbell art.campb...@gmail.com ... Re: Table won't roll to next page
Just to let everyone know how it ended up, I deleted the two tables and pasted them into a blank document. Then I went to the end of the third page, hit return, and pasted in the first table, then did the same for the second table at the end of the document. Now the tables roll just fine. I think the first page of the document was disconnected from the other pages, and I added a small hidden disconnected text frame on the first page to provide a Chapter heading for the TOC. These could be the culprit, or who knows -- I'm just glad I've got the documents tamed. I really appreciate all the feedback you guys gave me. I've been at this for a year now, and feel like I've moved about an inch forward on the mile-long learning curve that is FrameMaker. And I am a pretty sharp person! I don't know if it's just because I'm working without an expert here, or if my brain just doesn't function in FM ways, but I am so impressed by and thankful for the body of knowledge you all to bring to bear to my problems. Thank you, thank you, thank you! The table in the middle of the document is working just fine. The table at the end of the document won't roll to a new page, so 10 or so rows are disappearing. I've doubled checked the master page usage. For the first table, the page are Custom Right, Custom Left, Custom Right. For the second table, the pages are Custom Right, Custom Left. So as far as the table will go, it is using the same master pages as the previous table. When I try to change the pagination from Make Page Count Even to Make Page Count Odd, I get this message: The new column layout in DOCNAME.fm seems to overlap other objects on some body pages. I've gone into pagination and changed the setting from Make Page Count Even to Make Page Count Odd, but that hasn't done anything. I can think of three possible causes of this kind of behavior right off the top of my head: 1) One or more columns straddled across rows. 2) Keep With Next Row and/or Keep With Previous Row set in TableRow Format 3) A very large value set for Orphan Rows in the Table Designer. Does the existing last page use the default master page? Or does it use some special master page? Deirdre, I have not had this happen with FM 8.0, but I have experienced what you are describing with previous versions of FrameMaker. Once fix that sometimes works is to save the document as MIF, then reopen and rename as the binary *.fm file. When this happened to me, I could not find any additional text columns or odd features on the body or master page. When this happened to me, it was always with a table at the end of the document. Try saving to MIF and see if that helps. _ Maxwell Hoffmann Director, Document Globalization Practice Globalization Partners International (GPI) www.globalizationpartners.com tel: 866.272.5874 direct: 503.336-5952mobile: 503.805.3719 skype: maxwell.hoffmann email: mhoffm...@globalizationpartners.com Follow me on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/maxwellhoffmann -Original Message- From: Deirdre Reagan [mailto:deirdre.rea...@gmail.com] Sent: Monday, January 12, 2009 12:11 PM To: Framer's List Subject: Table won't roll to next page Hi All! RE: Subject: Challenge with Trados
Marc, I concur with Wim's analysis. Whenever I have seen this in the past it has always been a case of someone using an incorrect version of Trados. Many translation agencies use contract linguists and occasionally, such a linguist will not have all of the correct filters or files when they prep their translated work. Your translation agency/vendor should be preparing the files and also doing post-translation engineering to ensure that such glitches do not happen. _ Maxwell Hoffmann Director, Document Globalization Practice Globalization Partners International (GPI) www.globalizationpartners.com tel: 866.272.5874 direct: 503.336-5952mobile: 503.805.3719 skype: maxwell.hoffmann email: mhoffm...@globalizationpartners.com Follow me on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/maxwellhoffmann -Original Message- From: Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp [mailto:w...@idtp.eu] Sent: Monday, January 12, 2009 12:17 AM To: marc.creag...@sympatico.ca Cc: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Subject: Challenge with Trados Hi Marc, Indeed, best practice is to save as MIF and use that to work with Trados. The Trados S-Tagger filters the MIF to either tagged RTF or STF - where STF is the most reliable. This file wil be used by the translators and after translation filtered back to MIF. STF is translated using the Trados Tag Editor. The loss of accented characters is a known issue and indicates that your client (or his translation agency) is not using the correct version of Trados in combination with the right filters (i.e. compatible with FM 8.0); The translated files (in RTF) are probably ok, but the filtering back to FM causes the error. Using RTF for translation indicates thet probably an older version of Trados is used. They should consult the Trados helpdesk (actually SDL) to solve the problem. HTH, Best wishes for 2009! Deirdre Reagan wrote: > I fixed it! > > I autoconnected the first page to the second page and the table on the > last page miraculously rolled over to a new page. > > I don't know why that worked, but I'm glad it did! > It worked because text frames that have a flow tag and autoconnection cause FM to automatically create more pages when text reaches the bottom of the frames. (That's part of the reason it's called a "flow" -- content is a continuous stream, although it is visible only in discrete frames and pages.) Text frames that have no flow connection or tag exist in isolation and do not cause more pages to be created when they contain too much text. (Note re terminology: it is actually frames, not pages, that are connected.) The only remaining "don't know" is how the disconnected frame got created in the first place. It's possible that someone deliberately used the Special > Add Disconnected Pages command, thereby foiling FM's beautiful engineering with their manual intervention. (Unlike with MS Weird, it's better to let FM do its own thing ;-) On the other hand, it is remarkably easy to accidentally create a flowless, disconnected text frame by selecting a normal frame (CTRL-click) and moving it while the CTRL key is still pressed. A "mouse-stutter" that moves the frame even one pixel and back again is enough to duplicate the frame (minus flow tag) directly on top of the original. If content happens to end on that page, you will see the end-of-flow marker on the connected frame, while also seeing such a marker on the disconnected (disconcerting!) frame on top of it. But if your content doesn't end on the connected page, it can be very mystifying indeed. Table won't roll to next page
Art Art Campbell art.campbell at gmail.com "... PDF drawings into FrameMaker
I want to thank everyone for their responses about my issue with importing PDF drawings into FrameMaker. Some suggested using different formats, but with our software setup, PDF is my only way. The PDF prints perfectly fine -- until I import it into FM! It's rather frustrating. That said, I used PDF-Fly http://www.pdf-fly.com/ to convert the files into MIF. This works beautifully! Thanks for the suggestion, Jan. Now I have to figure out how I'm going to convince my company to buy the program when FM should do this, without a hitch, on its own Adrianne Please take care of the environment, print only if necessary.

Unstructured FM to DITA XML
Hi Robyn I have done quite a lot of unstructured FM to DITA XML conversions, but I use Mif2Go for this because it's a lot more powerful than Frame's conversion tables. I've got a Captivate Flash movie that shows you how the conversion process goes. If you're interested, just let me know and I'll send you a copy. Cheers -- Yves Barbion ? Managing Director ? Table won't roll to next page
Table won't roll to next page
_ Maxwell ?Hoffmann Director, Document Globalization Practice Globalization Partners International (GPI)??? www.globalizationpartners.com tel: 866.272.5874? direct: 503.336-5952mobile: 503.805.3719??? skype: maxwell.hoffmann email: mhoffmann at globalizationpartners.com??? FM 8.0, Windows 3.1. Just kidding -- Windows XP. I'm having a problem with the table on the last page of my file. I add 10 more rows, and the rows disapper on the page -- they don't force a new page. I've seen this before and I seem to remember it's a simple fix, but for the life of me I can't remember what to do! I've gone into pagination and changed the setting from "Make Page Count Even" to "Make Page Count Odd," but that hasn't done anything. Any thoughts? Thanks! Deirdre
Subject: Challenge with Trados
Marc, I concur with Wim's analysis. Whenever I have seen this in the past it has always been a case of someone using an incorrect version of Trados. Many translation agencies use contract linguists and occasionally, such a linguist will not have all of the correct filters or files when they prep their translated work. Your translation agency/vendor should be preparing the files and also doing post-translation engineering to ensure that such glitches do not happen. _ Maxwell ?Hoffmann Director, Document Globalization Practice Globalization Partners International (GPI)??? www.globalizationpartners.com tel: 866.272.5874? direct: 503.336-5952mobile: 503.805.3719??? skype: maxwell.hoffmann email: mhoffmann at globalizationpartners.com???
