2010-01-25 Thread Diane Gaskill
Heya Hedley,

So, you got rich as a TW and retired early eh? :-) Congratulations! You
didn't say anything about leaving the list, but you did mention burning the
bridges behind you. Well, after all, you've been on this list only 17
years (that I know of anyway). I just checked my archive (17.4K messages)
and in the 200 or so messages I have from you, I found a real oldie that I
thought might be worth posting. Check the date on the message. I'm sure
that many of the listmembers will find it interesting. More from me
following your message below.

ATTENTION Framers: Forgive the intrusion of this header for one week.
We have been given official user group status by Adobe. Because
of this and finally agreeing on a name that doesn't infringe on Adobe's
right to FrameMaker with Adobe's legal team, this new online user group
will be known as FrameUsers.com. Although I like workingtogether.com,
it was not good enough to explain the purpose of the site and these lists.

The changes will occur Friday, 20 June at 5pm MST. All email to
workingtogether.com will NOT function after this. Access to the web
site via workingtogether.com WILL function for one month.

As of Friday, 20 June 1997, these are the new addresses:
- Majordomo (subscribing/unsubscribing): majord...@frameusers.com
- Posting Address: fram...@frameusers.com
- Human Admin (Brad Anderson): b...@frameusers.com
   b...@falconmedia.com
- Website: http://www.FrameUsers.com

This header will remain on message until Friday, 27 June. This is the
easiest way for me to make sure all members read this important
announcement. For all of you that must gripe and complain when any
changes occur, please direct them to me at b...@falconmedia.com.
===

Well, if you do leave the list, even though I've never met you face to face
(AU is a bit far from CA for that), it's been my pleasure knowing you and
exchanging messages all these years. You've been one of the mainstays and
definitely one of the few I call FM expert. Good luck, enjoy your
retirement, and Godspeed. Feel free to look in on us once in a while.

Regards,
Diane

Now that I am retired and no longer working as a technical writer, it's
time to clean out the cupboards, and burn the bridges behind me.

If you want a tutorial about learning to create XML structure
applications in FrameMaker, you might like to purchase a textbook used
in a class given by Allette Systems, Sydney, on creating EDDs and other
structure components. It is called /'Applications Buildings with

sold as an application separate from the unstructured version.

Hi all!

After my tenth or so reboot this morning, I'm getting slightly upset...Well
especially after reading that FM 9 on Vista 64 is rock solid-bombproof.

My problems occur mainly when switching from tab to tab or scrolling pages. Do
(have) you encounter(ed) the same problems?

Cheers,

OT: Text insets and trados translation workbench

2010-01-25 Thread Andersen, Verner Engell VEA
Hi

I have been using text insets in my Framemaker file to make sure that
the same piece of text is writtten in the same way everywhere.

It seems that our translator has translated directly into the chapter
and not the text inset.

Does the Trados translation workbench not support text insets? Should I
convert the insets to text directly in the chapter biles.

Re: Fix for Acrobat license problem in TCS

2010-01-25 Thread Alan T Litchfield
Thanks Richard,

A useful link. This appears to be similar to other Adobe licensing
problems.

Really there is no change from what people have already said except
that now they have an application that queries the database that
stores the data and confirms that it is indeed lost, in which case you
have to reinstall Acrobat.

I suppose at least we now know where the problem is, why not back up
this cache.db file and when the problem occurs, replace it?

OT: Software recommendations

2010-01-25 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hello All

I just started a new job at a software company whose product is very
GUI-intense. User assistance is crucial, and our legacy versions use online
Help that opens in a separate browser window. Management seem to be very open
to the idea of embedded help, etc. in upcoming versions, and they are very
serious about good UI design - so I'm hoping I'll be able to promote embedded
help in the future.

In the past the Help was created in RoboHelp 7 and existed separately from any
PDF output, but in the future I can see us also creating well-designed PDFs,
single-sourcing the PDF and the Help, and maybe also training materials. There
will also be about four software packages with different sets of features (so
some form of inclusion/exclusion mechanism will be needed.

I'm looking for recommendations as to which software package(s) to use. My
inclination is to get TCS2, single-source in FrameMaker, and then push to RH.
I'm pretty savvy with structured FM (though not v.9.0).

Before I leap for TCS2, I wonder if there are other possibilities. We do not
need XML as yet, though it may be a remote possibility down the road). I've
also thought about using XML and the DITA-OT, but the PDF output is probably
not good enough and there will be issues with file management in the absence of
a content management system.

Any suggestions will be welcome. Thanks for your help.

FrameMaker/CMS article in UK STC Communicator

I just wanted to point out a recently posted article from the UK STC

Re: OT: Software recommendations

2010-01-25 Thread Writer
We use DITA (authored in FM9) and create HTML output with ePublisher.
Currently, we create an FM book from the DITA files, apply a template to the
book, and create the PDF with Acrobat. WebWorks has added the ability to format
PDF output through ePublisher, but we haven't had the chance to run it through
its paces. If we can get the output to look the way we need it to, this will
shave a lot of time off of production.

We do all this without a CMS, although I shall be investigating CMS systems
this year.

Even though we do have to keep a close eye on managing the files and the
process, I really like working this way.

Re: OT: Software recommendations

2010-01-25 Thread Art Campbell
I'd definitely look at TCS2, and then look at a couple of additional
things beyond that to investigate:
 1. MIF2Go can do a couple things RH can't, and vice-versa. So I'd
also investigate a second HA solution that can run off FM
single-source.
 2. If you're also doing manuals, or they want to continue doing
manuals, I'd look at the DocBook standard as a simpler alternative to
DITA, and one that may be easier to implement if they already have a
manual paradigm.

If you're not already a member, you may also want to join the TCS
User's Group at http://groups.google.com/group/TCS-Users?hl=en.

RE: Software recommendations

2010-01-25 Thread David Spreadbury
What is wrong with working in your current version of FrameMaker, which you
don't mention, so I am going to assume 7.2.

What is wrong with creating the PDFs straight out of FrameMaker?

Mif2Go can handle your online help problem. It produces several different
flavors of Online Help, from Windows Compiled HTML (CHM) to Oracle Help for
Java (cross-platform), to Omni Help (Web HTML Help), and the cost won't
break your budget. You can download and play with their eval version at
www.omsys.com.

As others have pointed out, you can, with a little work, manage the CMS part
manually.

Hello All

I just started a new job at a software company whose product is very
GUI-intense. User assistance is crucial, and our legacy versions use online
Help that opens in a separate browser window. Management seem to be very
open to the idea of embedded help, etc. in upcoming versions, and they are
very serious about good UI design - so I'm hoping I'll be able to promote
embedded help in the future.

In the past the Help was created in RoboHelp 7 and existed separately from
any PDF output, but in the future I can see us also creating well-designed
PDFs, single-sourcing the PDF and the Help, and maybe also training
materials. There will also be about four software packages with different
sets of features (so some form of inclusion/exclusion mechanism will be
needed.

I'm looking for recommendations as to which software package(s) to use. My
inclination is to get TCS2, single-source in FrameMaker, and then push to
RH. I'm pretty savvy with structured FM (though not v.9.0).

Before I leap for TCS2, I wonder if there are other possibilities. We do not
need XML as yet, though it may be a remote possibility down the road). I've
also thought about using XML and the DITA-OT, but the PDF output is probably
not good enough and there will be issues with file management in the absence
of a content management system.

Any suggestions will be welcome. Thanks for your help.

Re: OT: Software recommendations

2010-01-25 Thread Scott Prentice
Hi Roger...

Keep in mind that the DITA-OT and FrameMaker are not mutually exclusive.
You can use the OT to generate your HTML output, but still use FM for
authoring and PDF publishing. It's a bit of work to tweak the OT for
HTML .. but not too bad .. tweaking the OT for PDF output (especially if
you're looking for something comparable to FM's PDF) is a *lot* of work.
I'd go with TCS2 so that you've got all of the bases covered, and as
time permits, experiment with other options that may free you from
proprietary processing where appropriate.

Cheers,

Hi Art

Thanks for your reply, and Nadine too. I'm familiar with DITA and will most
likely use that.

I should have mentione in my OP that there are two of us here, and the only
software we have at present is the single RoboHelp licence, so buying a couple
of FM licences won't get us very far.

Thanks for the link to the User Group.

Heya Hedley,

So, you got rich as a TW and retired early eh? :-) Congratulations! You
didn't say anything about leaving the list, but you did mention burning the
bridges behind you. Well, after all, you've been on this list "only" 17
years (that I know of anyway). I just checked my archive (17.4K messages)
and in the 200 or so messages I have from you, I found a real oldie that I
thought might be worth posting. Check the date on the message. I'm sure
that many of the listmembers will find it interesting. More from me

We have been given "official" user group status by Adobe. Because
of this and finally agreeing on a name that doesn't infringe on Adobe's
right to "FrameMaker" with Adobe's legal team, this new online user group
will be known as FrameUsers.com. Although I like workingtogether.com,
it was not good enough to explain the purpose of the site and these lists.

The changes will occur Friday, 20 June at 5pm MST. All email to
workingtogether.com will NOT function after this. Access to the web
site via workingtogether.com WILL function for one month.

As of Friday, 20 June 1997, these are the new addresses:

easiest way for me to make sure all members read this important
announcement. For all of you that must gripe and complain when any
changes occur, please direct them to me at brad at falconmedia.com.

Well, if you do leave the list, even though I've never met you face to face
(AU is a bit far from CA for that), it's been my pleasure knowing you and
exchanging messages all these years. You've been one of the mainstays and
definitely one of the few I call "FM expert." Good luck, enjoy your
retirement, and Godspeed. Feel free to look in on us once in a while.

Does the Trados translation workbench not support text insets? Should I

Fix for Acrobat license problem in TCS

2010-01-25 Thread Combs, Richard
Just a quick heads-up for TCS 2 users who experience licensing problems
with Acrobat: Today at Adobe's "Technical Communication" blog
(http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/), Mahesh Kumar Gupta posted a link to
a utility and a procedure for using it to fix the problem.

I haven't experienced the problem myself, so I can't vouch for the
utility or procedure.

2010-01-25 Thread Scott Prentice
I just wanted to point out a recently posted article from the UK STC
Communicator magazine. This article titled, CMS integration for
FrameMaker, was written by Andy Lewis and Alex Masycheff. It discusses
CMS concepts in general and the issues around CMS integration with
FrameMaker. A "must read" for anyone considering this option.

OT: Software recommendations

As others have pointed out, you can, with a little work, manage the CMS part
manually.

OT: Software recommendations

Cheers,

2010-01-25 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
