hypertext problem

2011-06-20 Thread Jo Watkiss
I am trying to create a link to a specific page in a pdf file, but
cannot get the link to go to the correct page.

Both source and destination files are created in FrameMaker.

The destination file is a frame book file, that is distilled to a single
pdf file.

Each frame file re-starts page numbering at page 1. (1-1, 1-2, ... 2-1,
2-2, 2-3 ... 3-1, 3-2 etc). The PDF pages are simply numbered from 1
onwards.

If I set a link to go to page 27, it goes to 2-27, which is actually
page 45. This is the first chapter that has 27 pages.

I have tried using all the following syntaxes:

gotopage filename:pagenumber

openpage filename:pagenumber

openlink filename:pagenumber

I would prefer not to put the links in manually in the pdf (there are
lots of them).

Adding a linkname marker in the destination document works, but is not
feasible because it is a legacy document.

Any suggestions?

(FM9, Acrobat 9 on Win 7)

Thanks,

Jo Watkiss

missing menu items in Acrobat X Pro

2011-06-20 Thread Jon Harvey
Everyone,

I'm using Acrobat X Pro (not the reader) to view PDFs. I want to enable
document rights. I have instructions that tell me that I to go to the
Comments or Advanced menu to do so. There is no Advanced item on the
main menu. On further investigation, I find that my main menu is missing
several items: Document, Comments, Forms, Tools, Advanced.

However, I do have File, Edit, View, Window, Help.

How do I get all the menu items in Acrobat X Pro to appear in Adobe

FrameMaker save as xml does not convert entities

2011-06-20 Thread O'Connor, Mark (Mark)
Howdy all,

FrameMaker 7.x, Windows XP

We're saving files as xml. We're using the default isoents folder in the entity
search path (in the FrameMaker application file).

The greater than, , character does not get converted to the gt; entity.
Other entities, such as  do convert properly (in this case, to the lt;
entity). The symbol is entered as plain text.

I can create a new entity with a different name (adding it to the r/w rules and
the entity file) and convert the to that new name, but I can't use the iso
standard name.

Is this a known issue?

It's only a concern because I don't know how many other entities are not being
exported properly.

Thanks,
Mark O'Connor

Bullet Styles

2011-06-20 Thread Wood, Claire (GE Oil & Gas)
Hi Everyone

Quite a few years ago I managed to use different bullet styles e.g.
square bullets, triangular shaped bullets, etc. I can't remember how I
defined those styles in Framemaker. Can someone please remind me? I'm
using FM7.2. I'd like to know if it is the same for FM10 too.

Kind regards

Yes I did see Rick's post. Thanks Rick for your help!! I could feel the gray

Luckily it is a simple fix. The chapter numbers have their own style and all I
had to do was to make Alignment = Left and kept Position = End of Paragraph.
The chapter number remains at the right margin.

but I cannot see it. This is happening for chapters in the two books I've
checked.

The FM10 version numbering and font settings are identical to the FM9 version,
as far as I can tell.

I did try saving the FM10 version to MIF 10 format but the number is still
invisible.

Thanks for the ideas!

Not sure what "The space is there" means. What matters is what's in Paragraph
Designer. Is the Autonumber Format (on the Numbering tab) still correct, i.e.,
unchanged by the conversion?

Assuming it is, what about the numbering settings for the file? How do they
compare with the same settings pre-conversion?

Here's a wild guess. If the file is one chapter in a book and normally gets its
numbering from the book, when you open it standalone, the <$chapnum> variable
usually retains the value it had the last time the book was updated. Maybe the
conversion for some reason interferes with the ability to recall that previous
value, and everything will be fine once the entire book is converted and
updated. :-)

Bullet size and bold text

2011-06-20 Thread Tim Pann
Is there a style guide somewhere that states a bullet item should not be
all boldface?

[raises hand] I do! I do!

In fact, I'd find it hard to _not_ type a space after a period,
regardless of where in a paragraph it occurs. Muscle memory is pretty
important in typing. Why would you train yourself to not hit the
spacebar after a period in some circumstances? What possible benefit
does it provide? As Fred noted, this "errant" (??) space doesn't affect
line spacing or anything else. Why does it bother you?

In fact, it has a couple of advantages I can think of off the top of my
head.

1) As Fred noted, when a char format (or ad hoc formatting) is applied
all the way up to the pilcrow, it modifies the paragraph and creates an
override. This is either a bug or the FM development team's subtle way
of suggesting that all paragraphs should have a space at the end.

2) The reason all paragraphs should have a space at the end is so that
when you merge two paragraphs, you're not missing a necessary space.

Fred's suggestion of applying a char format as part of the autonumber
format is an excellent one. All my autonumbered pgf formats have their
own char format (and mine, too, begin with "z"), even though some of
those char formats set everything to "As Is." If that ever needs to be
changed in the future, I can effect the change just by changing the char
format and updating all.

Also, you might want to think about why you're applying a char format to
all the text in a paragraph. I've done that only very rarely and only as
a workaround for an unusual layout problem. If you need to do this more
than once in a blue moon, create a new pgf format instead.

Conditional text invisible

2011-06-20 Thread Tim J. Slager
FM 10

When I apply conditional text and select "Show Condition Indicators" the
conditional text disappears. It's there, and I can highlight it, copy, cut,
etc. But it looks as if it is white on white. If I apply an additional
condition tag then I see the text with the combined colors. But if I remove all
but one condition tag, it goes back to white on white.

I wasn't able to find a solution in help or through Google. I didn't have this
problem before a few weeks ago.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

TIA. tims

fonts and localization problems

2011-06-20 Thread Debra Laroche
Hi Framers,

A colleague has asked me to help solve a problem that happens when documents
are translated into various Asian languages. Text with the convention we use
for code, which uses the CourierNew font, doesn't translate,
and instead renders as in the translated versions of the English text.

Please take a look at the following information and let me know if you have
any workaround for this recurring problem.

**

*Issue*: The English language documents use a character style called
TypeCommands that uses Courier New font for code snippets. When translated
into any of the double-byte languages, these code snippets show up as
??.

*Current Workaround*: Editing the character style to use Bold + Italics
formatting on the appropriate font for each language fixes this issue.
However, this process is time consuming and given the number of documents we
are turning around, it is just one more hurdle that holds us back each time
we need to regenerate the PDF after translation.

*Fonts for each Asian language*:

? Chinese Traditional ? PmingliU

? Chinese Simplified ? SimSun

? Japanese ? MS Mincho

? Korean ? GulimChe or BatangChe

*Authoring software*: FM 8 or FM 9

*Translation software*: MemoQ

Thanks so much!
