Re: Vertical line at right edge of graphics frame

2011-09-23 Thread Janice Swanson
Beverly,

I have no idea if this is similar to the experience I had, but...

In my case, I had a text frame (no background fill or colour) placed over a
coloured graphic for a brochure I was converting to PDF and printing in high
quality. If I had View Borders selected in FM when printing to PDF, a thin
white line appeared where the text frame was, but only on the hard copy of the
document, not on screen. If I deselected the View Borders option before I
printed, the thin white line disappeared. If you work with Borders visible
maybe try turning that feature off just before printing to see if that makes a
difference.

Re: Importing PDF Comments into FrameMaker 10

2011-09-23 Thread Joseph Lorenzini
Hi all,

I actually think I figured out the problem here. If a block of text is being
edited (deleted or replaced) and the text happens to contain content that
cannot be in track text (TT) edits , such as variables, and xrefs, then a
marker is created which contains the edit. The track text edits only work if
the content being edited is only text.

I did not realize this. I assumed the text surrounding the marker text would
be placed in TT edits and only thing that cannot be in a TT edit would be in
the marker. I must say this significantly reduces the usability of importing
PDF comments into FrameMaker. its not as if a reviewer is going to know that
a variable is the PDF and he should avoid editing it so it can show up as
track text edits in FM.

Sincerely,
Joseph Lorenzini

Acrobat Pro X is Slow

2011-09-23 Thread Joseph Lorenzini
Hi all,

I recently upgraded from TCS 2.5 to TCS 3.5. This means I went from Acrobat
9 Pro Extended to Acrobat X Professional. Has anyone else noticed a
significant slowness in opening and navigating through PDFs in 10 compared
to 9? I have 8 GB of RAM and a solid state drive for pete sake and Acrobat X
still noticeably lags when loading a PDF, selecting a link etc. According to
this forum post, I am not alone.

http://forums.adobe.com/message/3796164

One suggestion was to disable the enhanced security, which I did. Once I
did, I did notice a small improvement in speed but nothing enormous. The
most expensive operation is opening the comment pane to review the
commands made in a PDF. Scrolling through the list or selecting a comment
almost makes the PDF hang. And of course, reviewing PDF comments is
basically the only reason I use Acrobat.

Also, please keep in mind that this is after TWO reinstalls of the entire
TCS 3.5 suite.

At this point, I am thinking about just using Acrobat Reader 9 to review
comments, which I find pathetic. I find it unbelievable that adobe would
release product with this amount instability.

Sincerely,
Joseph Lorenzini

PS Can someone explain to me why you can't resize the comment pane in
Acrobat Pro X? And yes that's more of a rhetorical question. :(

Master pages and templates

2011-09-23 Thread Smith, Andy
Hi

Is there any good advice anywhere about master pages and how they relate
to templates? I've been working from the help system since I started
using Frame a year ago. Apart from a stint on v7.2 I'm pretty much self
taught. (I've booked on an intermediate advanced Frame users course
but they cancelled the last one because of lack of interest.)

My problem is that I seem to have some issues with my master pages,
variations in positioning of the header footer etc., and I'd like to
retrospectively put them right. I've got a set of main content pages
with a header footer plus an inside front cover and an inside rear
cover which are slightly different and a front cover that differs again.

I've got a template file that contains my formats but that's only got
two pages so I'm not sure how that relates to the master pages on each
of the different page types. Should I have a template for each of my
page types?

What I'd like is a step by step guide on to setting up the master pages
retrospectively (what I'd really like is for them not to cancel the
course again) and then applying them to my document.

Any ideas?

how to convert FrameMaker file to SGML format

2011-09-23 Thread Chris Despopoulos
To look at it as though it's something you intend to do...

The first question is, what DTD are they using?  Is it a standard (DocBook, for
example), or is it a DTD they created themselves?  Related to that question...
Do they need the full DTD to express the structure in your document, or can you
use a greatly reduced subset?  If they're asking for SGML, then they should
already know these things, and they should have a DTD to give you.

Second, try using Structured Maker to convert the DTD to an EDD.  If the
element definitions come through, then you're in pretty good shape.  It can
happen.  If it's a standard, there may already be EDDs out there to map to
their DTD.  Or heck, maybe they already have an EDD in place!

Related, is the issue of formatting.  The EDD needs to express formatting...
H1 has X point size and indent, H2 has y, etc.  This you will probably have to
do yourself.

Once you have the EDD completed, you import it into a template...  This is now
your template for the structured document.

Next step is mapping your unstructured formatting to the EDD.  Maker provides a
mapping capability, and unless your document is pushing the envelope, it's
entirely possible to set up a map that wraps your paragraphs in structured
elements.  Or, if this is a one-off, try importing your EDD into your document
(backing up your work, of course) and manually wrapping the content in
structure elements.

At this point you have a structured document.  To save it as SGML, you need to
create a structured application that brings together your EDD, the DTD, any
read/write rules you might need, etc.  When all is in place, you should be able
to save as SGML.  You will need to look at the Structured Application
Developer's Guide to get it all to happen.

I suppose an alternative could be to save your document as HTML, then conver to
XHTML, and then run XSLT to map the HTML to whatever their DTD might require.
That can only work if your formatting is simple enough to be fully captured in
HTML.___

Joel, I do not understand completely:

If you want to write noël (note the trema on the e), you type ESC : e in FM to
get the ë.
On french or swiss keyboards most of the required accents (diacritical marks)
are available as so
called dead keys.

See a complete list of these sequences in the attached pdf (which was with FM
until version 9). Look
into the section Support for FrameMaker 7.x character set and scroll to page
12.

If you need the diacritical marks themselves, e.g. ^ ~ ` you find most of them
in the same table.

If my answer is not sufficient, please describe in more detail, what you want

Hi, all!

Working in structured Frame 10. Trying to create multiple master pages for
our new manual series. I've figured out how to change page sizes and create
new master pages in general.

One issue: I need to have multiple page sizes within a book. The majority of
the book is 5.5 X 8.5, but we want to be able to have 11 X 8.5 pages
inserted as well. The production is already taken care of, so not worried
about that bit.

Is there a way to have all my master pages in various page sizes within one
file? Or do I have to create separate files with the different master pages?

Thanks!

seem to use anything but the PDF. You should consult with your customer to find
out what they really need.

Subject: how to convert FrameMaker file to SGML format

Now that I am done with my Component Maintenance Manual, I have been asked to
deliver it in SGML format. I did not create it using Structured FrameMaker. I
have searched the web for information and I am confused on how exactly this
works. If anyone has any information on how to convert a FM document to SGML
format, I would very much appreciate it.

Thank you in advance for your help.

how to convert FrameMaker file to SGML format

2011-09-23 Thread Chris Despopoulos
To look at it as though it's something you intend to do...

The first question is, what DTD are they using?? Is it a standard (DocBook, for
example), or is it a DTD they created themselves?? Related to that question...?
Do they need the full DTD to express the structure in your document, or can you
use a greatly reduced subset?? If they're asking for SGML, then they should
already know these things, and they should have a DTD to give you.

Second, try using Structured Maker to convert the DTD to an EDD.? If the
element definitions come through, then you're in pretty good shape.? It can
happen.? If it's a standard, there may already be EDDs out there to map to
their DTD.? Or heck, maybe they already have an EDD in place!

Related, is the issue of formatting.? The EDD needs to express formatting...?
H1 has X point size and indent, H2 has y, etc.? This you will probably have to
do yourself.?

Once you have the EDD completed, you import it into a template...? This is now
your template for the structured document.?

Next step is mapping your unstructured formatting to the EDD.? Maker provides a
mapping capability, and unless your document is pushing the envelope, it's
entirely possible to set up a map that wraps your paragraphs in structured
elements.? Or, if this is a one-off, try importing your EDD into your document
(backing up your work, of course) and manually wrapping the content in
structure elements.?

At this point you have a structured document.? To save it as SGML, you need to
create a structured application that brings together your EDD, the DTD, any
read/write rules you might need, etc.? When all is in place, you should be able
to save as SGML.? You will need to look at the Structured Application
Developer's Guide to get it all to happen.

I suppose an alternative could be to save your document as HTML, then conver to
XHTML, and then run XSLT to map the HTML to whatever their DTD might require.?
That can only work if your formatting is simple enough to be fully captured in
HTML.

Two Questions

2011-09-23 Thread Klaus Daube
On 21 Sep 2011, Joel wrote:

> function?

Joel, I do not understand completely:

If you want to write no?l (note the trema on the e), you type ESC : e in FM to
get the ?.
On french or swiss keyboards most of the required accents (diacritical marks)
are available as so
called dead keys.

See a complete list of these sequences in the attached pdf (which was with FM
until version 9). Look
into the section "Support for FrameMaker 7.x character set" and scroll to page
12.

If you need the diacritical marks themselves, e.g. ^ ~ ` you find most of them
in the same table.

If my answer is not sufficient, please describe in more detail, what you want
to achieve.

Master Pages in Multiple Sizes?

2011-09-23 Thread Kristy Nolan

Hi, all!

Working in structured Frame 10. Trying to create multiple master pages for our
new manual series. I've figured out how to change page sizes and create new
master pages in general.

One issue: I need to have multiple page sizes within a book. The majority of
the book is 5.5" X 8.5", but we want to be able to have 11" X 8.5" pages
inserted as well. The production is already taken care of, so not worried about
that bit.

Is there a way to have all my master pages in various page sizes within one
file? Or do I have to create separate files with the different master pages?

Thanks!
Kristy

You can't mix page sizes in an FM file. The larger pages have to reside in
their own file(s) within the book. That means you may have significantly more
(and shorter) files in the book, depending on the number and distribution of
the larger pages. And some of the new files may start in the middle of a
chapter/section, so you'll have to remember to adjust numbering settings
appropriately.

Hi Kristy,

You can only have one page size per document. Please let me know if you have
