This _may_ be due to the fact that your screen capture program that outputs the
TIFF does not place a good "thumb-nail" inside the file. The actual printed
output may be just fine, but displays (particularly when editing in FrameMaker)
would not look good at all.

My general observations:

1. JPG is fine for pictures, but terrible for graphics and line-art. Don't edit
and save a JPG (multiple generations) and expect it to maintain quality each
time you save!

2. PNG is fine for line-art and graphics - particularly when viewed on-screen.
Loss-less and can also be used for pictures too.

Since most of my "images" are drawings and business graphics, PNG suits me best.

Carol,

I assume you are referring to commercial printing, where either CMYK
process colors or similar spot colors are used.

Re: How to Choose the Right Image File Format for Print

2015-03-20 Thread Fei Min Lorente
Thanks for that article, Carol.

I've been using PDF from Visio source (sometimes Illustrator or CAD drawings),
and I'm currently using PNG for screen captures. I used to use TIFF, but then
something changed. I'm not sure if it was going from Windows XP to Windows 7 or
changing my laptop, but the TIFF figures were all fuzzy and the PNG ones
weren't (when I look at PDF and HTML). I haven't tried printing the PNG
graphics; we just ship PDFs and since our customers haven't complained, maybe
they're not printing them either.

Where I work we use either PNGs (if we have a screenshot) or SVGs (generated
from Visio). We do a *lot *of Visio diagrams.

We use PDFs created in Illustrator. As I understand a single page illustrator
and PDF file created by illustrator are identical or at least totally
exchangeable.
