Re: [Framers] preventing 2-word product name from line breaks ?

2016-04-06 Thread Peter Gold
I was thinking that perhaps it would be possible to create rules that
define the variable suitably for each doctype, and in each specific
context, within a document set, if one was using structured FM. However, in
an enterprise that prohibits all user-installed add-ons, even if structured
FM were in use, customizing the EDD might be prohibited.

So, in the end, manual search/replace might be the only practical solution.

Re: [Framers] slow-scrolling images

2016-04-06 Thread Peter Gold
In the early days of publishing, it was common to use placeholder graphics
for a variety of reasons, then replace them with the "real" images before
sending the documents to production. The placeholders were usually marked
conspicuously "For Position Only," but occasionally some would slip past
proofreaders, and be published.

I can't remember if turning off FrameMaker's graphics display retains
anchored and unanchored frames but hides the graphics they contain. Hiding
the frames obviously would disrupt layouts.

I seem to remember that one proposed solution for avoiding slow display of
graphics in FrameMaker, in the distant past, was to create low-resolution
copies of referenced graphics, with duplicate names, in a duplicate-named
directory tree, then swap the two trees before publishing the documents.

An even fainter memory seems to recall that there may have been a script
that renamed the directory trees, paths, and/or filenames in MIF, or in the
operating system (Windows or UNIX.) It's obvious that round-tripping large
document sets to and from MIF, even with the aid of scripts, could be
problematic.

Re: [Framers] slow-scrolling images

2016-04-06 Thread Heiko Haida

Hi John,

well, it is common that loading of graphics takes longer when the files
are stored on network drives. You could try to gather all files on a
local drive.

Another kind of obstacle are certain anti-virus softwares. Maybe the
most frequently used file types should be put on a "white list", if
possible.

And last but not least large bitmap files with high resolution take
longer to be rendered by FrameMaker. The effective resolution should not
exceed 300 dpi, a higher resolution is not necessary in most cases.

There have already been some discussions like this, you may also check
the Frameusers' archive.

You can update a variable in all .fm files in a .book with a single
import.

Yes, but that presupposes that you want *all* the variables from the source
file. But in my case, I have different variables in different FrameMaker
templates (for frontmatter, ToC, chapters), with only some variables, such
as the doc's part number, in all the templates. So by using BookVars, I can
easily change/add only the desired variable, to all files in the book,
without affecting any other variables.

So it depends on your setup which method is easier/quicker/applicable.

(But if you're at a company that won't allow you to install such utilities,
as is the case with John I believe, you just have to do things the manual
way. I've been at places like that, and it's always a drag on my
productivity. I'm happy to be working on my own system now where I can use
any utility that I want :-).

Re: [Framers] About text frames

2016-04-06 Thread Craig Ede
If I recall correctly, the text frames in graphics are found by search after
the main text flow, so a search and replace started from the end of the main
text flow might allow you to search on paratag Body and then paste the paratag
of your choice. It'd be a one-change at a time process, but could work if there
aren't too many such paragraphs. (I believe I've used this technique in the
past, but memory is a funny thing and I don't have time to test this now.)

And extendscript could certainly do this by skipping such paras in the main
text flow and and ref and master pages and only changing them elsewhere. Rick,
could you comment?

[Framers] a structured view of text frames in graphRE: About text frames

2016-04-06 Thread Craig Ede
A related issue:

When using a conversion table to structure an unstructured document that uses
text frames inside graphics, I've notices that the conversion results in all
the text frames being converted to Body formatted paragraphs. They usually have
a different name in the unstructured file and differ from Body in that they
have no indent (in our template, Body indents). This results in the exported
graphics having text inappropriately positioned and often overflowing the text
box.

I expect I could redefine Body to be left aligned for the conversion of the
graphics, but does anyone know another way around this?

Thank you.

I get a very slow response in FrameMaker when scrolling through files with

moving through the pages in a file.
It takes longer than it should for each image to appear as the page scrolls

Re: [Framers] preventing 2-word product name from line breaks ?

2016-04-06 Thread john . x . posada
Our department has changed names 3 times. The first time, it took me almost
all day to make the change. After I made it into a variable, the next time
it took me about 45 minutes.

I have two versions; one that gives the whole name with the iniialism in
bracket for first time use. The other vesion is just the iniiialism. 45
minutes change 3 books with 2,000+ pages per book.

FWIW, for me, variables work best for this purpose ... that way, an
occasional search and replace (perhaps at the end) works wonders.

This makes the "product name change" problem _far_ less of an issue in the
long run!

[Framers] slow-scrolling images

2016-04-06 Thread John Sgammato
Have any of you worthies seen and fixed this issue?
I get a very slow response in FrameMaker when scrolling through files with
referenced images. Obviously, the more images the slower the response when
moving through the pages in a file.
It takes longer than it should for each image to appear as the page scrolls

Silicon Prairie's Paragraph and Character plug-ins will do this for you (I've
included a Para and Char sample below).

The plug-ins are very inexpensive and highly useful and also include versions
for Tables, Variables, Colors, etc.

ok, I understand, that is true. No, I think there is no way to change

I would recommend to simply copy/paste the callout frames from an

Re: [Framers] preventing 2-word product name from line breaks ?

2016-04-06 Thread Robert Lauriston
What if you find and replace foo\x20bar with foo\x11bar? or foo|bar
with foo\x11bar?

If you can't trust yourself to use it 100% consistently, a variable
would just add complexity.

2016-04-06 Thread john . x . posada
Don't worry about remembering...at some point, just do a search and replace
and change all occurrences to a variable. You want to use a variable for
product names...sure as hell, at some point, marketing is going to change
product names.

Hello, Framers,

(Using FrameMaker 2015, but I don’t think that matters.)

I have a 2-word product name that I don’t want to break across lines. I
know that I could always use a non-breaking space between the words to
prevent line breaks. But that’s hard to remember to do all the time. And
the search function treats the spaces as a diff, so if I’ve got
inconsistent usage (some regular spaces, some non-breaking spaces), a
single search won’t find everything.

Another idea is to use a variable, with the space entered as a non-breaking
space. But sure as the sky is blue on this gorgeous day in San Francisco,
at some point I’ll forget and just directly type the product name without a
space, and later edits will push it to the end of the line into a line
break situation.

The Format > Document > Text Options lets you specify “Allow Line Breaks
After” chars, but doesn’t have a “Don’t Allow Line Breaks” option, which is
what I really want here.

Any suggestions for other approaches or utilities I can try?

-Monique

Re: [Framers] About text frames

2016-04-06 Thread Pat Christenson
I'll clarify further.

When I create a text frame for a callout to a graphic, it always defaults to
Body. I have a paragraph format called Callout. Can I change the default
paragraph for a text frame to Callout?

I can't simply redefine Body to match the settings of Callout because we use
Body throughout our documents.

To change the paragraph tag for a new .fm file, ee "Change the template for
blank paper" in the help.

Other than that, the paragraph tag for a new paragraph is set by the Next Pgf
Tag setting in the previous paragraph.

Re: [Framers] About text frames

2016-04-06 Thread Heiko Haida

Hi Pat,

a) no (you could write a script for this, or you copy an already
existing text frame)

b) well, you can delete the "Body" format and use this file as a
template.
Can you describe a situation when FrameMaker needs to apply the "default
para format"?

[Framers] Relative URLs

2016-04-06 Thread William Cohan
I would like to post the following question:

In FM11, I want to enter a relative url in the Hypertext "Go to URL" field; is
this possible and what is the syntax if it is?
Note that the root would be a changing base address:
Sometimes it might be from a test server, like:
http://testing123/docs/ops/operations.html
or it might be an active website:
htto://bing/docs/ops/operations.html
You would think the relative URL would be /ops/operations.html, like so:

[cid:image001.png@01D18FF2.A69C6520]

But this does not work.
Please advise.
Thanx,
William

The name of the graphic frame is displayed in the FM status line.
To change the name, just click on this name.

Kind regards,
Klaus

Hi
I am trying to make some course material and was suddenly confused. When I make
a graphic frame on the reference pages in FrameMaker 10 I am prompted to give
it a name. When I click Object Properties on the new frame afterwards I can see
the name I gave the graphic frame.
When I try to do the same in FrameMaker 12 I am still prompted to give the
frame a name. When I click Object Properties however, I can no longer see the
name of the frame.

What am I doing wrong here? Where is the name of the frame?

Best regards

   Hi Bjorn,

Frame names from Reference pages appear in Paragraph Designer on the
Advanced tab/options in the drop down choices for Frame Above Pgf/Below

I usually add a label above each frame using a Draw a Text Line
tool while creating the frame on the Reference Pages.

   Hope this helps.
