[Framers] new features table FM v9 to v2015 Re: CudSpan's HuntOverrides - w/FrameMaker 2015 (FrameMaker 13) ?

2016-06-02 Thread Craig Ede
Find and Remove Overrides have been part of FrameMaker since v9 (2009).
Here's a resource that highlights new features and improvements on them from
FM9 to the current version.
https://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2016/01/framemaker-9-to-2015-compare.html

There is a PDF of the table you can download there as well.

Sure enough! Wonder how long this feature’s been in FrameMaker without me
knowing it?!

[Framers] thanks - for prev. fonts help

2016-06-02 Thread Monique Semp
Hello, Framers,

Just a quick note of thanks to the many of you who have shared your knowledge
and advice for so many years on this list!

As you can tell from my recent spate of messages, I’m doing a big cleanup of
templates and docs. I ran into an odd (to me) issue with the fonts. A font
appeared in the Fonts pod, and I could “locate” it, but even though the
FrameMaker toolbars showed that “something” was that font, there wasn’t any
content to see.

So I searched the Framers archives, and found the answer
(http://www.mail-archive.com/framers%40lists.frameusers.com/msg60721.html): the
font was in a now-non-existent para style in a table title. The style didn’t
appear in the actual .fm file (I’d deleted it many years ago), but when I saved
as MIF and opened the MIF in Notepad++, I found it. I deleted the element,
resaved as .fm, and everything’s gold!

So thanks for helping our the tech writing community!
-Monique

Re: [Framers] conditions - in templates vs. applicable docs ?

2016-06-02 Thread Craig Ede
Amen, Fred! I've always heavily documented my templates, which, of course,
didn't keep the folks who followed after from ignoring all that and "being
confused" and importing things willy nilly from other template, etc. etc. etc.

But it's nice to have that stuff for those who do care! And a nice clean
template squirreled away in a repository somewhere can cure all kinds of ills
inflicted on a book/document.

And since each of these format/variable/condition templates is only used to
overlay FrameMaker layers that don't contain document content, you can use the
content layer to contain detailed descriptions of everything that is defined in
the template, and even a change history as the template evolves.
Self-documentation is a really powerful tool for templates and stylesheets

When it says that nothing is found, is that in a single open file or in a book?
I've found that there are times when I'm searching through a book and for some
reason FrameMaker does not search though some of the chapters in the book. My
theory is that when FrameMaker has a problem opening a file in the book, the
search just skips it. This is a serious bug if you ask me. It would not be so
serious if FrameMaker would say that some files were skipped, but I don't think
this always happens.
(Perhaps in the newer version.) I often open all the files in the book before
performing a search.

As far as it happening sometimes and not other times, it may be a RAM issue,
which is affected by which other program you currently running and possibly
even previously used programs since the computer was started. If you are
working on the files that are on a server, FrameMaker may be skipping files
that it can't access within a certain amount of time.

Re: [Framers] ExtendScript for save as text, for Git usage ?

2016-06-02 Thread Robert Lauriston
Git does not support binary files. It assumes that all files under its
control are mergeable text.

I'd use something like git-annex or Git LFS for unstructured
FrameMaker and image binaries. (It's not currently an issue for me
since my doc source is in Confluence and the only files I put in Git
are those required by the build process.)

Do you really find it useful to diff MIF files very often?

[Framers] ExtendScript for save as text, for Git usage ?

2016-06-02 Thread Monique Semp
Would it be an option for you to keep a copy of every FM document in plain
text? This is not as cumbersome as it sounds, since you can install an
Extendscript which saves the plain text copy automatically whenever you
choose File > Save. I've set up something similiar to have a readable copy
for Git version management. If you're interested, I can post the
Extendscript on the mailing list.

Hi Jo,

I'm also using Git, and the option of having a plaintext version for Git
compares sounds appealing. Can you elaborate on the process you're using,
anything to look out for, and post the script?

I can see great potential for this, but wonder whether extraneous info will
clutter up a Git compare (I'm using the SourceTree GUI client on Windows,
which has a good compare normally; and I also can use GitLab's compare on
the server-side to see diffs), or whether relevant diffs might get lost due
to formatting diffs or something?

Thanks much,
-Monique

Re: [Framers] Save doc/book in older FM-version

2016-06-02 Thread Klaus Daube
Hello framers,

Lin Sims had the idea to add "Save as MIF".
Hence I updated the script in http://www.daube.ch/docu/fmaker73.html

- Save as MIF always saves in the 'current' MIF version.
Trying to use for example Constants.FV_SaveFmtInterchange100 within FM-13
  does not save anything.
- The dialogue is now a palette to allow handling of multiple open items.

I will put this script into Scott's database.

Re: [Framers] conditions - in templates vs. applicable docs ?

2016-06-02 Thread Monique Semp
you can use the content layer to contain detailed descriptions of
everything that is defined in the template, and even a change history as
the template evolves. Self-documentation is a really powerful tool for
templates and stylesheets because I've never met anyone who can remember
all the details for more than a day or so.

Excellent point, and happily this is something that I've been doing. Indeed,
it really served me well in this client's case because I was the one that
set up all the templates many years ago, used them for several years, and
then had a 4+ year break working for other clients. When I returned to this
client (and FrameMaker, which I hadn't been using at all in this interlude),
and boy was I glad that I had lots of explanations and examples of pretty
much every char and para format, and lots about the variables as well.

Re template best practices: Something that I'd recommend is including a
variable that identifies the template "version". I have a variable named,
"__templateLastUpdated" (the double-underscore puts it at the end of the
variables list, which is nice because I don't need to see this very often),
and set it to ", , ". This way I can
look at any .fm file in any book, look at the variable value, and know if it
matches the current template or not. This mitigates the need for keeping a
spreadsheet/wiki page to list all the docs and all their files and all their
template versions.

And so for the conditional "template", I'll add another variable (something
like, "__conditionTemplate") so that in any real doc file I can easily tell
which "style" template is in use *and* which "conditional" template is in
use.

Great tips, everyone!
-Monique

Ah, and just treat that file as a "template", and use it to import the
relevant conditions into the applicable docs' .fm files? I like that idea.
It would be easy to create a template_conditions_prod1.fm file, a
template_conditions_prod2.fm file, and so on, and then just use those to
make sure that every .fm file in a given book gets the same conditions.

And by extension, I could mimic this for other template elements, such as
variables.

The wonderful SmartDocs add-in for Word does that - they have a feature called
Snapshots in which you specify both variable values and conditional text
settings. You can have multiple Snapshots for a document.

Frame could really use something like that.
