JPG will not work for vector output - it is a bitmapped format.

Try SVG if your imaging tool will support that output format.

Re: [Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-25 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
I used the TLP to update FM and Acrobat for a couple of years - was before FM
11 was released, I think.

Had to stop because Adobe told me that I had to have a _minimum_ number of
licenses to qualify for renewal - I think it was 10 copies, but not sure.

Which we certainly did not have (no need for it in a small company), so I had
to let TLP drop too.

Re: [Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-25 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Hi, Doug, et. al.

As far as I am concerned, yes! For you, the cost to go from 2017 to 2020 is
likely to be quite expensive, since you skipped FM 2019, once FM 2020 is
released! For sure, If you are on FM 2015 (or older), you have to essentially
get a new license to do an "upgrade".

As some of you all know, I believed that a time of "no-more-perpetual-licenses"
would come to pass ... when Adobe first announced the subscription model!

So, I stopped all FM upgrades as of FM 12. The cost was/is _unreasonably_
expensive if you are _more_ than a version old, essentially forcing a new
license purchase.

Plus, I do not choose to use subscription models for any software I get. It may
well be fine for many people - so what I believe does not apply to you all, of
course! I wish to retain the ability to fire up an old tool - even if not in
use currently - and redo work. With a subscription model, if you are not
actively using the tool, it is costly ... if everyone thought this way, it
would be a significant monthly charge and unacceptable.

Anyway, I migrated all my _new_ documents to LaTeX (works beautifully for _my_
needs - with semi-real-time PDF previews, etc.), and only bring up FM 12 to do
simple changes to old documents.

I have to figure out how to migrate that old FM12 license to a new computer I
just got though ... I am not sure how long Adobe will allow me to do this (or
if now too!). If not possible, I will revert to an even older version of FM -
still have licenses for FM 7.2 for example that does not require activation ...
just have to save all my docs in compatible MIF.

For anything likely to need more than a few days of edits to an old FM
document, I convert from the PDF to LaTeX - the extra day or so to do that pays
off completely.

Again, it is _important_ to emphasize that my specific needs are well-met with
LaTeX, but that this may not be true for you all, of course! YMMV.

Also, I have found excellent alternatives to all the Adobe products I was
using, with one exception that I have to find the time to check out - a
replacement for Acrobat Pro (will look at FlexiPDF from SoftMaker soon - just
bought a copy). Not because I dislike Acrobat Pro per se, but because I think
it too is heading to a subscription model.

I am only on this list for historical reasons ...  ... began using FM on a Sun
3/50 in 1988 (_way_ prior to the acquisition of Frame Technology) and like to
hear about what people are up to.

Regards,

Z

Re: [Framers] Using vector images in Frame

2020-08-25 Thread Fred Ridder
That's because JPG is a raster (i.e. fixed resolution) image format.
You need to use a file format that contains vector images or that can contain
both raster and vector data. For FrameMaker, this typically means EPS, PDF, or
EMF/WMF. When I was still using FrameMaker regularly, I usually used PDF
cropped to contain the image with minimal whitespace borders. One advantage of
PDF is that FrameMaker displays a better likeness of the graphic in the
document view than it does with other vector formats (but this may have
improved in more recent versions of Frame than I last used.)

Re: [Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-25 Thread Lin Sims
As I said, they *did *provide a way to activate the CS1-3 packages without
needing a server, but that was for only a short period of time and it is no
longer available.

My guess is that a similar thing will happen if the CS4-6 servers are
deactivated. However, as I also said, I do not work for Adobe and should
not be considered an authority on what they will choose to do in the
future, nor should anything I say here be considered a guarantee of what
they will or will not choose to do.

This is an authoritative list of all of Adobe's products and when they went
End of Life and when Extended Support was ended. I hope it helps.

Re: [Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-25 Thread Mike Wickham
If Adobe is going to deactivate CS servers, they need to provide a way
to turn off the need to activate, so that the software can still run.
I'm nearing time to replace my computer, but have been holding off,
dreading the issue of dealing with CS deactivations and reactivations.

On 8/25/2020 12:35 PM, Lin Sims wrote:

Carol, I don't know. I don't work for Adobe.

My understanding is that the activation servers for CS1-3 simply wore out
and weren't maintainable anymore, the software required to perform
activations can't run on the new platforms, and it would have taken a great
deal of money and time for Adobe to try to port it. They weren't willing to
spend those resources for a product that hasn't been for sale for almost a
decade and for which even extended support was ended over a year ago.

There *was *a brief time period at the end of 2019 where Adobe provided a
special, you won't need an activation server, number for the CS1-3
products. I emphasize *brief*: that option is no longer available.

My assumption is that if and when they retire the activation servers for
CS4-6 the same will happen, but I have no way to know this for certain.
Since I have none of the CS products, I also don't know if Adobe sent out a
notification of this happening for CS1-3.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help. (Oh, and yes, if it has CS in the name
it is/was part of Creative Suites.)

And standard warning: if anyone tries to get in touch with you claiming to
be able to sell you Creative Suites, do not buy from them. They're
scammers, and at best you will lose your money.

Not free, Affinity has a collection of design, graphics, and publishing

GIMP is freeware and does everything Photoshop does.

Probably more than most folks need for image transmogrifying, close, but
not everything.

IMO, the Adobe photo plan $10/ subscription for both Lightroom (including
mobile, for editing photos on phones,) and Photoshop, is worth the price if
you edit only one important photo a month. If you're in business, a
negligible expense.

InDesign's long-document and book authoring, editing, and publishing tools
caught up to FrameMaker a few years ago. There are some inexpensive
third-party tools, like smart language-aware, and page-aware,
cross-references ("on opposite/previous page,") and MIF import. But if
you're bound to DITA, sorry.

Adobe still does the 30-day trial.

I know because despite my company having a subscription, the only way I
could download the installation program was to fill out that stupid form.
Someone at Adobe doesn't like updating the FM associated websites and links.

There are quite a few trainers out there. Barb Binder and Matt Sullivan are
two of them. I think Shlomo Peretz still does some training, but I also
think he's semi-retired. I could be wrong about that.

Re: [Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-25 Thread Lin Sims

Re: [Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-25 Thread Roberta Hennessey
Hi.
I see folks talking about FrameMaker. As someone who hasn't used the tool
in years, does Adobe have a 30 day free trial these days?
And does anyone know of external learning resources for someone relearning
Frame? Or recommendations?

If you have a perpetual license, you will not have to pay additional money.

If you want to upgrade to FM2020, though, you will be getting a
subscription and will have to pay to continue using the program.

Lin, it has been a bazillion years since I've had to reinstall Adobe
products so forgive me if my question is naive. I have a perpetual
license to Photoshop CS4 and InDesign CS5.5. Because they have "CS"
in their names, I assume they are Creative Suite products. If Adobe
retires its CS4-6 servers at some point and I need to install these
programs on a new computer (assuming that the OS will support them),
will I be able to activate them?

It just burns me when I purchase a perpetual license and along the
way, the software company changes its licensing agreement. I just
went through this with Intuit Quickbooks. I purchased a perpetual
license in 2009 and now they tell me that the license was only good
for 11 years and will expire this year. Huh?

Re: [Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-25 Thread Lin Sims
I'm not Adobe, but I can confirm that as of the 2020 version, all the
products in the Technical Communications Suite are subscription only. They
are also 64-bit software only.

The information in October was correct for FrameMaker 2019 and TCS 2019. If
you purchased a perpetual license for any of the products in TCS 2019, it
remains good.

Be aware that Adobe has also moved to an N-1 support program. If I recall
correctly, that means they provide support for the current and immediately
previous version of their product.

I'm not surprised the website hasn't caught up. Whoever manages Adobe's
websites never seems to get around to the products they consider to be
niche. For example, through my job I have a subscription to FrameMaker, but
if I go into my account to download it, the link takes me to Creative Cloud
instead, and has for more than a year. When 2020 was released, I literally
had to fill out the form for a trial product, even though I have a
subscription. Once it's installed, though, logging into Adobe verifies the
subscription.

Additional information: For those of you who still have Creative Suites, it
is no longer possible to activate CS 1-3. Those servers are retired. You
can still activate CS 4-6, but support is minimal. I think you can get the
number of activations reset and that's about it.

Re: [Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-25 Thread Harding, Dan
Can we get some confirmation from Adobe on this? This came up back in October
of 2019, and at that time they stated that perpetual licenses through the TLP
were still going to be supported. The TLP website is still active and doesn't
say anything about being discontinued.

Despite what I was told last year:

"/Customers will still be able to purchase perpetual licenses of all
the above-mentioned products through Channel (Adobe authorized
resellers) under Transactional Licensing Program (TLP) and
Cumulative Licensing Program (CLP) even after 1 July 2019./"

perpetual licenses only applies to Adobe FrameMaker 15 AKA 2019 release.
As quoted from the Adobe Territory Account Manager:

This should be available for limited time."

and /that//:/

/"Going forward, all the FrameMaker versions will only be available

But no further information was given.

Currently subscription costs stand at approximately US$30 / GB£30.34 /
€UR 36 / AU$45 etc. per month.
