Re: How to get an 'x of y' page number format in the TOC

2012-03-09 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Hi Apurva,

To get the generated output you're looking for, you need to add the
additional variable and text to the TOC format in the Reference Pages.

 Dear All,

Greetings from Pune, India. Thank god for Framemaker!

I am a freelance technical writer for multidisciplinary 'non-IT'
engineering - mechanical, electrical, electronics, instrumentation,
 automation and such.

One of the manuals I was working on had a page 'x of y' format (like page
4 of 40). Inserting the current page number and the total number of pages
 is the easy part.

1. View - Master Pages
2. Format - Headers Footers - Insert Page #
3. Add an 'of' text after Page #
4. Format - Headers Footers - Insert Page Count
5. Switch back to View - Body Pages

At this point the pages show the page numbers in the headers or footer in
 the 'x of y' format.

After this, how does on include this page number format while making a
 TOC?

The TOC setup procedure (Add-Table of Content) permits the addition of the
following Paragraph Tags - Body, Bulleted, CellBody, CellHeading, Footnote,
 Heading1, Heading2, HeadingRunln, Indented, Numbered, Numbered1, Table
Footnote, TableTitle and Title. Is there a similar procedure to tweak the
 number formats in the TOC?

I have experimented by adding $lastpagenum variable in the reference
page of the TOC (like $pagenum of $lastpagenum, of which the
$pagenum is generated automatically by the TOC process while the of
$lastpagenum is inserted by me). This does not work at all.

Do you have a solution for my query?

 *Apurva*

Re: Getting graphics out of a file

2012-02-20 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Hi Lynn,

If you still have the Word file, save it as a .docx if it already isn't
one. Then in Windows Explorer change the extension to .zip. Open the
WordDoc.zip in Windows Explorer (right-click Open). All the embedded
graphics will be preserved as stand-alone graphic files in the word/media
folder.
Then it's simply a tedious process of renaming the graphic files, and
replacing the embedded one in FM with referenced versions of these.

Hi Lauren,

In the FM PDf workflow you should be able to set bookmarks to init caps
by using TimeSavers. Worth it's weight in gold that one is.

As far as Word goes, well, there isn't much to say other than good luck. In
theory it might be possible accomplish it using pdfmark inside a PRINT
field code, but I suspect that line of inquiry is much more trouble than
it's worth.

I’ve set the page numbering for all files to “Read from file”.

I’ve gone in and edited the $volnum variable in each of the individual

Apparently this isn’t the way to go about it, as it’s not working. I just

PDF Bookmark Letter Case

2012-01-17 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Hi Lauren,

In the FM > PDf workflow you should be able to set bookmarks to init caps
by using TimeSavers. Worth it's weight in gold that one is.
http://www.microtype.com/ImprovePDF.html

As far as Word goes, well, there isn't much to say other than good luck. In
theory it might be possible accomplish it using pdfmark inside a PRINT
field code, but I suspect that line of inquiry is much more trouble than
it's worth.

FrameMaker 7.2 on Windows XP, Adobe Acrobat 6 Professional, and TimeSavers
 5.0.

We normally password-protect our PDFs produced from FrameMaker to guard
against accidental or deliberate changes, but we had a customer request the
ability to annotate the PDF file. Under Adobe PDF Security, I found the
option for Changes Allowed: “Commenting, filling in form fields, and
signing”. I thought everything was all right because I could then comment
on the resultant PDFs, but I was using Acrobat.

I then found out that people who are using Reader cannot comment on the
files unless I enable commenting in Acrobat. Is there a way to enable
commenting using any of the above tools that I told you that I have, before
the PDF is generated? We have an automated output system, so I must be able
to configure the settings in one of them without opening the PDF file after
 it’s been generated.

If the answer is no, then will I have any better luck with FrameMaker 10
and Adobe Acrobat X on Windows 7? We’re supposed to upgrade this year.

Re: Acrobat 9 Pro can't read out loud

Sounds like a software bug. You might try rolling back the patch to 9.4.5
or earlier until it works again.

to work. The document is fully tagged, the sound and speakers are working
correctly. After activating the Read Out Loud feature (View-Read Out
Loud-Activate Read Out Loud), when I select any of the options (e.g., Read
This Page Only or Read to End of Document), Acrobat crashes. It doesn't
matter if I'm using a PDF generated from Framemaker or one downloaded from

I've read through Adobe's Help forums and can't find a solution. Has
anyone had and successfully resolved this problem?:

Some malware camouflage themselves as splwow64.exe, particularly if they

this is what Adobe gave me as a download)

Have installed Windows XP mode, but it is not clear to me what I do now. I
have edited the properties of the desktop shortcut for Framemaker to run
program in XP SP3 as administrator. Do I need to uninstall Frame from the
Windows 7 machine and reinstall it in the virtual pc machine?

What I'm trying to do is to save a file as PDF off the Frame menu which is
what generates the SPLWOW64.EXE error. I have noticed a couple of quirks in
the screen display of Frame since I've been on the Windows 7 box, but I'm
mostly composing, so I haven't seen many errors.

It was recommended to me to print to Postscript, but I don't seem to be
able to get that working at all.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed,
 Theresa

Re: Distilling Mixed Sizes

2011-09-02 Thread Baruch Brodersen
This topic has been addressed several times the last few months. It can be
done and fully on the template level through postscript textboxes on master
pages, and it can be further automated by incorporating the use of Apply
Master Pages so that content you want on A3 pages will always stay on A3
pages and likewise with the A4 pages.
This method is too much bother for most, who opt to produce separate PDFs
and cobble them together through post-processing efforts.

 Hello Eduardo,

We've faced a similar problem with mixed A3/A4 pages. FM will use the page
size of the chapter from which you start printing for all the following
pages. Two ways to do this:
 - save the book chapter by chapter to PDF and glue the chapters together in
 Acrobat.
 - save the book to PDF, save the chapter(s) with the larger size pages
separately to PDF, remove the chopped pages from the PDF and replace them
 with large separately saved chapters.

But if anyone knows of a better method, please share it.

 Subject: Distilling Mixed Sizes

 Live from New York!

Good afternoon fellow Frame Templars and Acrobats

I'm looking for that proverbial magic bullet whereby I can distill
 FrameMaker
 pages of
different sizes without chopping them down to size.

 First, the system:

 Frame 9 unstructured
 Acrobat 9 Pro
 Windows XP SP3

 Next, The setup:

A FrameMaker book, including 13 chapters, 7 appendices, and several key
 indices.
 Mostly a 8.5 X 11 inch with about 6 pages embedded with 8.5 X 14.

After using every setting in Distiller, all pages are distilled into 8.5 X
 11, literally
chopping off the tops and bottoms of the 8.5 X 14 pages.

I've done this before and didn't change any settings, so I'm thinking there
 has to be a bug
somewhere either in Acrobat or due to a recent Windows SP3 upgrade.

If there are any suggestions, please let me know.

All the best, standing tall, sword and shield

 Eduardo

done and fully on the template level through postscript textboxes on master

Re: Importing paragraph formats

2011-08-21 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Tim,

Yes. You can do import single paragraph, character, and conditional text
formats with a MIF fragment. To do that:

Save the FM file containing the paragraph format you want as a MIF file.
Use MIF Browse to locate, select and copy the paragraph format.
http://www.wideman-one.com/gw/tech/framemaker/mifbrowse.htm

Paste that MIF code in a text editor. In addition to the paragraph format,
you'll also need the

PgfCatalog
 Pgf

tags, as well as the

  # end of Pgf
 # end of PgfCatalog
## End of MIFFile

closing tags

In the text file, make sure to include a MIFFILE header is at the top of the
page. It should look something like this:
MIFFile 7.00 # Generated by FrameMaker 7.0p579 You can grab a MIFFILe
header from any MIF file and use that.
Save the MIF fragment, and then open it in FrameMaker. It should appear as a
blank page.
Import in paragraph formats from the MIF fragment into the Frame document.
Voila.

If you run into problems, send me the file and I'll make one for you.

best,

formats with a MIF fragment. To do that:

Save the FM file containing the paragraph format you want as a MIF file.
Use MIF Browse to locate, select and copy the paragraph format.
http://www.wideman-one.com/gw/tech/framemaker/mifbrowse.htm

Paste that MIF code in a text editor. In addition to the paragraph format,
you'll also need the

 # end of Pgf
> # end of PgfCatalog
## End of MIFFile

closing tags

In the text file, make sure to include a MIFFILE header is at the top of the
page. It should look something like this:
" # Generated by FrameMaker 7.0p579" You can grab a MIFFILe
header from any MIF file and use that.
Save the MIF fragment, and then open it in FrameMaker. It should appear as a
blank page.
Import in paragraph formats from the MIF fragment into the Frame document.
Voila.

If you run into problems, send me the file and I'll make one for you.

best,

Re: Need help with crash diagnosis

2011-07-25 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Hi Richard,

According to Adobe (Troubleshooting Postscript Errps,
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/328/328515.html) nostringval indicates a problem
with an element of graphic. Try replacing the graphic on page 54 (or 55?).
If that doesn't work, it could be a corrupt font or glyph used on that page.

I'm trying to create a PDF from a book that has been PDFed many times
before, as recently as a week ago. Since then, I've made various updates
throughout, and something has obviously changed for the worse. Each attempt
to either save as PDF or print to PDF results in the same serious error
 crash of FM.

According to the Distiller logs, the job always ends on the same page. I
can find nothing on that page or the one following it that hints at the
problem. The changes in that section, IIRC, were simple text edits and the
removal of a row from a table (maybe some other table changes).

Neither the backup nor the autosave version is any help (both too recent).
A MIF wash didn't help. I'd rather not recreate that section from the
corresponding one in the previous release (many months and changes ago). But
if I must, I'd like to minimize the portion I need to recreate.

Thus my first question: It's been a very long time since I had such a
problem, and I can't remember -- is the problem page the last page listed in
the log file or the page after that?

Here's the end of the log file from the most recent failure:

 %%[Page: 53]%%
 %%[Page: 54]%%
%%[ Error: syntaxerror; OffendingCommand: --nostringval-- ]%%

 Stack:
 true

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

And my second question: Can anyone shed any light on the error itself that
might help me find the source of the problem?

 Thanks!

I have two books that share all the same chapter files that have lots of
conditions. I inherited all of the content, but created the separate books
to handle different covers (was too hard to use conditions; long story).

The last 3 times I've tried generate PDFs, I've had the same problem. After
I set the conditions as I want for the book and print to .ps (yes, I always
use the old-fashioned print to .ps, then distill process), FM crashes.

The only thing that I've found that works to get the crashing to stop feels
like I have to train FM that it's OK to print these files to .ps. I open
each file in the book individually and print to .ps. After I do that for
each file (with no problems at any time doing so), both books will print
 just fine.

I did this just yesterday, made a few minor changes today, and got the
 crashing again.

Other things I've also tried, but did not work:

- Rebooting my computer

- Washing all files in the book with MIF

- Removing missing graphics (were lots of those hidden in conditions
I'm not currently using)

This is just maddening, as I keep having to work in these books and create
PDFs. Any ideas out there for a final solution?

 Thanks!!!

Re: Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book

2011-06-23 Thread Baruch Brodersen
It actually can be done, that is generating mixed page sizes in the final
PDF directly from FrameMaker.
The basic concept is to make all master pages 17x11 and use ps text box
code to trim the final output of non-17x11 pages to 8x11. (postscript marker
/cropbox)
You could use that as your inside spread or as a foldout. If you want double
sided pages, then you have to figure out a way to sequence two 8x11 pages on
the back of your 17x11 insdie spread.

This is a question for a fellow tech writer who can be reached at karlmeinert

He is running Windows 7 with FM9 p230 (but will be updating his patches
 shortly).

 Karl says;

Basically I want to have a graphic spanning a 2-page spread (left page -
right page) within a chapter. When I tried making a master page 11x17, it
applied to all master pages. Same when trying to edit a single body page.

 ** **

I'm not sure how relevant this is but I had to reinstall FM and disable the
PDF creation install option because it would not work with this system.

His first e-mail to me also said:

I'm thinking of adding an 11x17 page in my book to display a screenshot
with many callouts, but i can't figure out how to apply this page formatting
to only one page. The intent would be to have the page span page 2 and 3
of the chapter. Master pages doesn't like the idea much.

If anyone has any suggestions for him (I am anything but a Master Pages
expert), he would appreciate the help.

Re: bugs in FM 9's conditional build expressions

Hi Joseph,

Please provide Frame version, patches, and operating system details.

 Hi all,

Recently my company has decided to release several different editions of
the product we sell. This has forced me to create several conditional tags.
The complexity of the conditional tags and how its applied in the document
makes the use of build expressions highly desirable. However, it seems like
 this functionality is kinda buggy.

 Has anyone noticed the following:

-you cannot import build expressions from one document to another. that's a
killer. Is there some way around this aside from hand editing mif files?
-deleting unused build expressions requires me to save the FM file as a MIF
file, open the MIF file in a text editor, delete the conditional build
expressions, and then save the MIF back to FM format. Is it honestly the
case that Adobe didn't provide a delete button and this is the only way to
 get rid of expressions?
-when i use a build expression, my condition indicators don't seem to work.
 Anyone have an idea why?

 Sincerely,

More beer, definitely.

Make sure the GroupTitlesIOM format is specified in the book file PDF Setup
and not just in the Index file. (In the book file, select all files

Best.

I have a humungous book ( 1600 pages) with a subject index. I print to

When I print just the index, with bookmarks specified (GroupTitlesIOM),
the resulting PDF shows the alphabetic bookmarks in the expected way.

However, when I print the whole file to PDF with bookmarks specified in
exactly the same way (and with the individual chapter titles specified
as well), the result is absolutely no bookmarks at all.

Am I having a combined blonde/senior moment? Is it something to do with
file size? Do I need more beer?

Choose a PDF/X standard from the Compliance Standard drop-down list, and

I have old book (v7) where I switch Master Page Usage from landscape to
portrait by use of the Paragraph Tag , so I know that *once* I figured this
out correctly. I can’t use the old book as a copy for my new document, so I
have had to build this structure from scratch and I no longer remember how I

 Here’s what I find:

On Reference Pages, there is a line:
Book Update (Yes or No): Yes
which holds a table carat whose titles are:
Paragraph Tag Name, Right-Handed Master Page (or Single-Sided Master Page),
Range Indicator (Single, Span pages, Until changed), Comments

Paragraph tags called Heading1Lan and Headin1Port have pagination set to
 start at Top of Page.

What else do I need to do?

Re: Compare Documents -- with Tables

2011-01-28 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Hi Cathy,
I did a quick test, and I see what you mean. FM's native document compare
function in 9.0 is not very robust when it comes to structural changes in
tables.
Possible solution:
If you save your docs as PDFs, you can compare those side-by-side in Beyond
Compare http://www.scootersoftware.com/download.php as rendered text files.
Beyond Compare will show you text and column changes but not formating
changes.

For that you can use Acrobat. Acrobat 9's compare feature will show
formatting changes, but the column and text changes are hard, at least for
my eye, to intuitively grasp.

A two-phase comparison then, should enable you to visually capture the
differences:
1. PDF comaprisons in Beyond Compare for text, cell, and column changes.
2. PDF comparisons in Acrobat for formatting.

Alternatively, if you don't need to *see* the changes, you can *read* them
by saving the the files as XML, and then doing a side-by-side comparison in
Beyond Compare. In my tests, that worked pretty well.

a previous version of the document, for each draft revision.

The FrameMaker 9 Compare Documents utility works great for basic text.
However, our documents are full of tables. Many, many very long tables.

With FM's Compare Documents utility, if a table structure changes (a row is
added/deleted, a column is added/deleted, the anchor is moved, or any cell
formatting is changed) then FM simply inserts both the old table and new
table in the comparison document. The only conditional tracking it does is
to put a change bar next to the old and new table anchors, and only the
anchors take on the conditional color (i.e., red for deleted or blue for
 inserted).

In the comparison document, the two tables look like regular text - no
conditions are applied. We have to MANUALLY color-code the insertions and
deletions within all of the tables. This can take days, literally. There has
GOT to be a better way!

So my request is: is there any way to automatically identify the changes
within tables in FrameMaker, or with any application that would partner with
FrameMaker? (Acrobat doesn't compare tables very well either, nor does
Word.) I can't find enough information about FrameMaker 10 to know if they
have addressed the Compare Documents feature with tables.

Any direction on this topic would be greatly appreciated!

Ragnar has some very good suggestions. 10 quick search and replaces might be
the best bet.
The MIF to Word to MIF round trip also works well. If you do that, search
and replace in Word using these wildcards:

Find: ([0-9][0-9])([a-z][a-z])
Replace with: \1 \2

Note that there is an empty space between \1 and \2

 Hi, all.

I need to correct the measurements, in inches, in which the space has been
omitted between the number and the unit.

 In other words:

 Height: 17in
 Depth: 21in
 Width: 10in

 Or:

 The unit is 17in deep.

In Word, I could specify that a numerical value precedes the alpha
characters in and perform a search.

In FrameMaker, is there a way to make a search that specific?

As it is, I believe I have to search for every instance of in, which
 turns
up every word that contains the two letters in including, well,
 **including**.

It's rare that I long for Word, but this is one of those instances. I can
save the whole thing to RTF and do the search in Word, but I'd like to find
out first if Frame has the capability.

 Section I

If I don't use $chapnum, and just use one of the regular counters instead

 Hi everyone, and Happy Thanksgiving,

Here's a FM 8 (p277) question for you to ponder, it's been bugging me for
 some time.

When I cut-and-paste between paragraphs of different fonts (or any other
format), Frame remembers the source formatting, and pastes it along with the
text. So our strict formats get all mixed up.

I usually just use Paste Special... to paste as text, so it takes the
formatting of the target paragraph. It's rather annoying to have to do 3
extra clicks to do something as simple as pasting. But even that doesn't
work if I'm pasting a cross reference or special character like a
non-breaking space--they get lost when pasting as plain text. For that, I
have to do a regular paste, then reselect and fix the formatting to Default
 P Font.

It seems that FrameMaker knows how to do this because if I do a search and
replace with text that has special characters, they appear correctly
anywhere they get inserted (though if you replace by pasting, you're back to
 the same problem).

Is there a way to configure smart paste by default? Do FM9 or 10 behave
 differently?

 Thanks,

  Andy

Try setting the font size 2 pt., retain the distinctive font colroing,
use autonumbering, and add 50 or so em-spaces in the the autonumber
text field. This will result in a greeked non-printing line a couple
inches long.
To add an em space, use \sm.

Fuschia color, but after that, boom, it's a crapshoot. Sometimes the pilcrow
holds the color and other times, it doesn't and I have to go back manually
reapply the tag. It's very annoying as when proof-reading/editing my
documents, I need to confirm that the tag is indeed a PageBreak tag and not
a Body tag. (If I were just printing the manuals, then it wouldn't be an
issue, but I am single-sourcing these docs. and using ePublisher to produce
online help, so the issue becomes critical for this.)

Has anyone experienced this or something similar at all? Why on earth won't
 the pilcrow hold the color?

FWIW, I am using FM9 (all patched and current) on a Win7 64-bit system.

 TIA,

 TVB

Is there an easier way?

2010-10-19 Thread Baruch Brodersen
1. Redefine the cross reference formats in one file and import them across
all the book files. ImportFormatsSpecial is a great utlity to make short
work of this.
2. Use conditional text to include or exclude screenshots.

Re: Invisible numbers are appearing on the PDF file

2010-09-16 Thread Baruch Brodersen
A stab in the dark.
If you have more than one character format in a cross-reference, FM reads
the first and ignores the rest. You'll see the full effect until the
x-refs are updated, then all the extra formatting drops off. If the format
associated with the invisible number contain additional character
formatting, it could be inheriting this buggy x-ref-type of behavior.

I recently converted a FrameMaker manual from unstructured to structured
FrameMaker and applied the template that I use on all user
documentation. Everything looks normal in FrameMaker, but when I turned
it into a PDF today (by printing the book to Adobe PDF and creating a
postscript file, then running the file through Distiller with the -f
option), the chapter numbers which are supposed to be invisible are
showing up in the PDF. They aren't appearing in FrameMaker.

 [Optional reading:

For inquiring minds, the reason I have invisible numbers is because a
long time ago (before I started working here), someone decided to make
the chapter numbers large and fancy with a special graphic background.
As a result, they are not part of the paragraph style for the chapter
title. To get the autonumbers on the chapter titles, I've got a rather
tiny invisible number before the title text.]

The invisible numbers are not appearing on any of my other manuals when
I turn them into PDF. I've checked View Color Definitions and
Invisible is there. I've checked View Color Views and Invisible is
there, too. The definition of Invisible is the same as my template
(i.e., all the other manuals). The definition of the paragraph style for
the chapter title is H: =0$chapnum.\t, which is the same as the
template. The character format says it is using the Invisible color. So
I can't think of where else to look or what else to change. Is there
something about the PDF settings? Any ideas?

Strange page number format

2010-09-16 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Hi Nancy,
You might try checking the currentpage# variable defnition in the Index
Master Pages. It could be that the <$curpagenum> variable definition may
have been changed to <$chapnum>-<$curpagenum>. If so, deleting the
<$chapnum>- building block should clear up the problem.
Best,

Invisible numbers are appearing on the PDF file

2010-09-16 Thread Baruch Brodersen
A stab in the dark.
If you have more than one character format in a cross-reference, FM reads
the first and ignores the rest. You'll "see" the full effect until the
x-refs are updated, then all the "extra" formatting drops off. If the format
associated with the invisible number contain additional character
formatting, it could be inheriting this buggy x-ref-type of behavior.

Re: Strange page number format

2010-09-15 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Hi Nancy,
You might try checking the currentpage# variable defnition in the Index
Master Pages. It could be that the $curpagenum variable definition may
have been changed to $chapnum-$curpagenum. If so, deleting the
$chapnum- building block should clear up the problem.

Hi. I'm using FrameMaker 7.1 in XP with SP3.

My Index is showing page numbers like this: 4-xiii.

The xiii is correct -- the page is from the Preface and is the 13th page of
the front matter. The front matter is numbered with lc roman numerals. The
page in question has the plain number xiii in the footer.

The 4 presumably comes from the fact that the Preface is the 4th document
in the book, even though of course it has no official chapter number. The
paragraph format I use for the title Preface is called TitleNoNum, and
 numbering is turned off.

So where is the 4- being picked up? How do I kill it?

 Thanks!

Re: Imported Word docs - table heading row of long tables is not repeated for further pages of the table

2010-07-01 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Hi Avi,
Rick Quattro's Table Cleaner plugin makes short work of this. Simply select
the row or rows you want to repeat, and choose Table Convert Select Rows
Body to heading Rows.
Short of that, you might try a) applying a table format to the imported
table, and b) add a header row (Table Add Rows or Columns Add a Header a
Header Row), c) copy and paste the original cells into that, then delete the
original row.

Re: Editing Multiple PDF Bookmarks

2010-06-24 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Karen,
I think the best work flow is to work exclusively with the source Frame
documents and never resort (as a standard workflow process) to editing the
final PDF.

1. You want to do is have the Professors heading *look* like a Heading 1 for
text purposes, but you don't want it to generate a Professors bookmark.
   i. Create a new format based on H1 (or whatever it is) and do not use it
to generate a bookmark.
2. Now the Professors bookmark goes away, and you need to generate a Faculty
bookmark in its stead.
  i. Create and anchored frame in the Professors heading. I like
to position these frames Outside the Column so that they don't interfere
visually with the text on the page.
ii. Inside the anchored draw a textbox, and type Professors
iii.. Create a new paragraph format for Professors, and use it as the same
level as the Faculty bookmark formally was in your PDF Setup.
3. Now Faculty will not appear as a bookmark and Professors will. This is
great, except now you have a textbox hanging off the Faculty heading that
says Professors. That doesn't look good. Here's what you do for that: make
it invisible.
  i. Define a color called INVISIBLE, and then use Color Views to actually
make it invisible. (Check Frame's Help if this throws you.)
ii. Redefine the Professors paragraph format so that the font color is
INVISIBLE, and voila, Professors is gone from the page. (Some people use
White instead of an invisible color. That will work only if your documents
are always printed on white paper. If the paper is off-white or colored,
you'll run into problems.)
iii. If you find you need to edit the text in the anchored frame, redefine
the color to Red or something else, and then change back to Invisible when
you're done.

Lastly, I'd urge you to get Shlomo Perets' TimeSavers utility. It's very
powerful and is worth its weight, as the saying goes.

bookmark itself must read Faculty. Since there are about 140 of these, I'd
like to be able to edit the bookmarks in a batch. Is there a way to do this
 in Acrobat 9?

Conditional text in the Frame file--to substitute Faculty for the current
head--does not seem to be the answer here, because showing it would create a
redundancy for the reader as well as alter pagination and text flow.

 Any options?

1) There are PDF to SWF converters utilities out there (Google PDF to SWF).
Your workflow would entail FrameMaker PDF SWF. I would experiment, get
the kinks worked out and then have Rick write me a script to automate it.

2) Maybe. You could for instance use a hypertext marker or PS code (better
to use Shlomo's TimeSavers shortcuts in either event, imo) to link to a
ColdFusion or some other dynamic page, as a trigger to launch and hook into
the program.

3) Among other digital assets, Scene 7 can utilize PDF, postscript, and XML,
all of which are common workflow output of FrameMaker.

Subject: Index with Dates?

Is it possible to have framemaker create an index that sorts based on
dates? I would like to be able to do this for the purpose of keeping
track of revisions being made to a set of procedures that I am working
on. In a perfect world I would be able to create something like:

2010 01 25
Procedure 1
Procedure 2

2009 12 24
Procedure 3
Procedure 4

I can get the procedures to sort properly based on the numbers but I
don't see how I would be able to change the Group Titles.

If someone has a better solution for being able to provide a mechanism
for recording the revisions to a procedure i.e., Rev. 1 : Removed
references to Fig 2. and updated weight of tank contents - Change made
by Peter Cottontale. 12/24/2009. I am really trying to avoid doing this
via a database because of the issues with managing the data eg., if the
user changes the titles it has to be updated in the database. I really
think that using cross- references for this is a better solution. Any
suggestions are appreciated.
