Searching for a Free Knockout Font

2006-05-22 Thread DeFlorio, Dominick
Hello Framers,

I'm looking for a free, sans serif, knockout font, with a similar look
as the Arial font.

I'm trying to get past using two different font attributes (color: white
or black) for callouts on dark, light and mottled backgrounds. I
noticed in an old Troy-Bilt manual, that they successfully used a
knockout font on all types of backgrounds. With this in mind, I
searched for a font with similar attributes but couldn't find a free
one. Any ideas?

Have you patched to the b144 patch? That may help. You may also want to
try (weird as it sounds) to search using Find Backward.

I might be wrong, but I think you can avoid this by forcing the
next-to-last file in the book to have odd page numbers. Then, your
final file would just have one page, and would make the total page count
to be even.

Thus, it's the second-to-last file in the book that would flex (adding a
blank page when necessary to make the page count odd), and that could be
done automatically.

You could thereby avoid the dual-book approach.

FM won't delete pages that use a custom master page (or, since it starts
deleting empty pages at the end of the file, any non-custom pages
followed by a custom page).

If you have to have a custom master page, you might be able to make it
work using the Apply Master Pages feature. I'm not sure, since I haven't
used it. You'd have to be able to change your last page back and forth
between the standard master page and the custom page, maybe by importing
the appropriate MasterPageMaps table (reference pages).

If you have FrameScript, a script could switch out the master pages.

Third possibility: Put the back cover into its own one-page file.

I quickly tried it (as I'm under the gun at the moment), but wasn't
successful. I'm sure it's in my setup of the mapping table. Don't have
time to determine my error, so the extra back page file was an easy
work-around. I'll implement the MP Mapping Table when I get a rare
quiet moment to learn it. Thank you for your advise.

Hi Dominick,

As you've discovered, assigning custom master pages causes the delete
empty pages command to fail.

You might look into setting up your master pages via the master page
mapping table instead of custom assignment. Then, you could reapply
master pages after changing conditions, and THEN save the file. That
should cause the correct master page assignment and the correct page
deletion.

All this assumes that you have a tag that you can hang the put Back
Cover here assignment onto.

Regards,

Sarah

Real Life Migration to Structured Doc

2006-01-30 Thread DeFlorio, Dominick

We are still trying to decide which direction to take toward structuring
our document collection. About two months ago, I posed a question to
FrameUsers requesting opinions on the best approach for migrating to
structure and received much valuable feedback.

I have been researching the possibility of using a company that provides
training coupled with consulting. Consulting and training are
multi-leveled, depending on the price tag. Due to financial
constraints, I am ambivalent about committing to a tack that may not
enable us to become self-sufficient. However, I am still open to it.

In my search for the best approach, Arbortext's Epic Editor came up as a
possible solution. Epic seems fairly robust, but I would like feedback
on real life experiences/opinions from anyone who has used Epic to
migrate Frame documents to structure. I am interested in hearing about
your experiences with the product as well as support issues--Frame
issues. I am also interested in experiences with the more traditional
Frame-to-structure, training/consulting companies.

...opinions and experiences, good or bad.

Thank you,
Dominick

If your docs are currently in FM, and your staff are skilled in FM, and
there are financial constraints, why are you tempted to move to a new

Phantom Images-Frame 7.2

2006-01-10 Thread DeFlorio, Dominick

After deleting, for example, a text box and callout arrow, from an
anchored frame, a phantom image of the object is sometimes left behind.
It is as visually clear as the deleted object. I know the actual object
is gone, but the phantom image remains. I've tried "refresh"
(control-L) and saving the document, but can't clear the image(s) until
I close and then reopen the document. Is there an easier way to clear
the phantom image?

FrameMaker's irritating habit of jumping pages

2005-12-12 Thread DeFlorio, Dominick

The problem still exists in 7.2...and is extremely annoying when working
with large documents containing many graphics. It occurs when your
cursor is at some point earlier in the book and you scroll through the
document past a large graphic. When the graphic finally loads, Frame
back-scrolls to the original cursor point. I assume this has something
to do with loading the graphic into memory because the behavior does not
occur at the same point twice. To get around it, you must continually
click at the currently displayed point. Clicking as you scroll
sometimes doesn't work if the you happen to click while paging through a
graphic.

Framers... FrameMaker 6 has recently developed an irritating habit. When
a page that contains an imported graphic is displayed, FrameMaker jumps
backwards for several pages immediately after the imported graphic is
first displayed.

Does anyone know why this should happen, and how I can prevent it? I am
not sure whether it happens with all documents, but it certainly happens
with all documents in a specific book.

Hi Framers,

FM 7.0p578
Windows XP Professional
512 MB RAM

I hope somebody can help me open this file. When I try to open it, FM
tells me I do not have enough memory. The file is a little under 2.7 MB,
and there are larger FM files in the book that FM does open. I've tried
closing everything and rebooting and then opening only that file, but I
get the same message.

There are a lot of graphics in the file, and I suspect that is the
problem. If I could just open the file to get the text back, I could
work around the graphics (split the chap into two maybe).

I've tried opening the file in Word, but it was garbage. I tried
converting it using a trial version of Mif2Go, but it converted all the
files in the book except the one I can't open. Also, I gave a copy to a
co-worker who has 1 GB of RAM, and he couldn't open it either.

Please, can somebody help? I put a lot of hard work into this chapter!

Thanks in advance for your help.

get the same message.

Can't Open a FM File

2005-12-08 Thread DeFlorio, Dominick

True. Fairly useless in this case, but since she sounded desperate, it
was worth a try...

While on the subject of .backup files, it is important to note that
these are not real backups. All that happens is that whn you do a Save,
FrameMaker renames the last manually saved version of the file with a
second extension (.backup) rather than marking it as an unused file that
the OS can reallocate. In other words, the "backup" file is always one
save behind the real working file, and the magnitude of the difference
depends on how frequently you remember to do manual saves.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

If you're setup for backup saves...have you tried opening the
*.backup.fm?

Hi Framers,

Best Approach to Structure

2005-12-05 Thread DeFlorio, Dominick
What is the best approach to learning how to structure Frame documents?
I need to learn quickly how to create and implement EDDs into many and
varied, unstructured Frame documents. Suggestions...links?
