Re: Landscape 11 x 17

2010-08-02 Thread Ian Hawkins
It's not that difficult, but you need to be aware of the interaction
between FrameMaker and Acrobat.

You cannot have a single FM file that contains different page sizes or
orientations. You can have a book where individual chapters have
different page sizes.

So, create the individual chapters, each with the proper page size and
orientation. Add them to your book.

Create a PDF. I always print to the Adobe PDF printer instance instead
of using Save as PDF. In the printer properties, set the page size to
the largest possible page size. In your case, 11x17, landscape.

When you print, be sure to select Generate Acrobat Data. This will crop
the smaller pages to the proper size.

Re: Key combo for Keep with Next?

2009-10-28 Thread Ian Hawkins
As others have said, there isn't a key combination that will do this
directly. However, you can ease the pain a little.

- Type either CTRL+M (single key combination) or ESC o p d (four
separate characters) to open the paragraph designer.

- Select the Pagination tab. If you are doing a lot of this, just leave
the paragraph designer open on that tab.

- Type ALT+n to toggle the Next Pgf selection.

- By default, the Apply button should be active, with a bold outline. If
so, press ENTER. Otherwise press ALT+a.

Try it a few times; it's really not that much trouble, and a lot easier
than using the mouse. When the paragraph designer is already open on the
right tab, it's only three keystrokes: CTRL+M, ALT+n, ENTER.

SetPrint changes the default FrameMaker printer. You can always change
it manually in FrameMaker, just as you would if you didn't have SetPrint.

The FrameMaker File Print Setup only changes the FrameMaker printer
for your current FrameMaker session. SetPrint sets it at the start of
every FrameMaker session.

Personally, I prefer to always print to PDF first, which is one of the
reasons I wrote SetPrint. I have found that FrameMaker output looks best
when you create a PDF. This is especially important if you use embedded
EPS graphics, for example.

Font information for your system has changed. This change may affect
the format and output of your document(s)

That means that the printer driver set for Frame changed.

I usually just click OK and carry on, but now we're trying to print as
part of an automated workflow process, and there's no one there to
click OK. In fact, you don't even see FrameMaker open on the screen.

I tried opening Print Setup for the book and selecting my default
printer. I've also tried selecting Adobe PDF as the printer.

Try installing SetPrint, a free utility from Sundorne:
   http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm

It lets you specify a different default printer for Frame than the one
you have as the system default, and should prevent this problem by
keeping the printer selection in Frame fixed, preferably at Adobe PDF.

While you are there, check out Ian's other three new free Frame
utilities. His $25 commercial one, IndexRef, is absolutely essential if
you want fully functional Frame indexes, where See and See-also
 references really work.

I'm using FrameMaker 7.2 on an XP machine, and I'm actually creating a
PDF using the FDK, then converting the book to HTML files using Mif2Go.
It's creating the PDF just fine, then failing during the HTML
conversion. Nothing is wrong with the Mif2Go configuration; the same
 files work just fine interactively.

Are you using runfm to handle the conversions? It works for both PDF
and Mif2Go projects. If not, see if that helps; we go to some lengths
to prevent Frame from asking for anything from the user, since the user
 is usually not there...

Re: Screen captures and sizing

2009-05-18 Thread Ian Hawkins
Short answer?

Capturing with SnagIt, saving as PNG, and importing by reference are all
good practices.

When you import into FrameMaker, use one of the following DPI settings,
depending on the size of the image:
72
96
120
144
192

Longer answer?

To get the best results when viewing a screen capture in a PDF, the
image should display at full size. That is, every dot (pixel) in the
image should correspond to a single pixel on the computer monitor.

Acrobat and Adobe Reader use some default values for displaying images.
For the most part, they assume that the monitor displays 96 pixels/inch.
Yes, this is fictional as you point out, but it's still important. If
I create a screen capture, import it into FrameMaker at 96 DPI, create a
PDF, and display it in Adobe Reader at 100% zoom, the image will be
perfect. It will be the same size as the original screen capture, and
there will be no loss of quality. At any other zoom level the image will
be degraded because there is no way to match the image pixels perfectly
with monitor pixels.

When the original image is too large, you have to use a higher DPI. If
you choose one of the values in the list above, you increase the chances
that users will be able to find the right zoom level.
72 DPI matches a zoom level of 75%.
96 DPI matches 100%.
120 DPI matches 125%.
144 DPI matches 150%.
192 DPI matches 200%.

There are some caveats for this advice. Users can change their operating
system defaults or Adobe Reader defaults so that 96 DPI is no longer the
default value for displaying images. Most don't, though, so you can set
up your PDFs for the majority.

Here is the current comment from a client: Generally, I would like to keep
 high quality of screen captures.

Would like to suggest using a tool that can downscale the images with a
smoothing function to keep high quality appearance. (as appear here, this is
 just sub-sampling with no smoothing.)

I use SnagIt as my capture tool. I use the region option and capture either
the relevant portion that I need or if required, I take a capture of the
whole screen. I then save the capture as a .png, and use the import file
function to bring the capture into my Framemaker file. Obviously, the
default dpi is set to the fictitious Windows 96 dpi. I change the capture to
150 dpi and import. If this works for size and clarity, then I am done; if
not, I right-click on the picture and adjust the dpi until I get the size
that works for the page layout and what I am trying to show. (After much
reading on this list, and advice from another colleague, I have learned that
what I was initially taught at a long ago gig - to set the dpi to 300 and
then use the manual sizing handles - is NOT the way to go).

Can any of you graphics gurus give me some insight as to what else I should

Re: FrameMaker Console

In addition to its primary purpose of setting the default printer, the
SetPrint plugin
(http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm) moves the
FrameMaker document window in front of the console window, so it's not
nearly so annoying. This would also be a very simple thing to do using

Re: Special Marker dialog box has disappeared

2007-07-26 Thread Ian Hawkins

Here is another possible solution that doesn't require editing maker.ini.

Open the marker dialog. Even though you can't see it, it's probably there.

Press Alt+Space. This is a Windows shortcut that gives you keyboard
control of windows and dialogs.

Press m (for move).

Either use the arrow keys to move the dialog or immediately click and
drag. Don't move the mouse before clicking. By default, when you press
m, the mouse pointer is placed on the title bar of the active window,
so you can drag even though you can't see the title bar. You can
experiment with some of the dialog boxes that are visible, just to see
how the procedure works.

Good luck!

Special > Marker dialog box has disappeared

2007-07-26 Thread Ian Hawkins
Here is another possible solution that doesn't require editing maker.ini.

Open the marker dialog. Even though you can't see it, it's probably there.

Press Alt+Space. This is a Windows shortcut that gives you keyboard
control of windows and dialogs.

Press "m" (for move).

Either use the arrow keys to move the dialog or immediately click and
drag. Don't move the mouse before clicking. By default, when you press
"m", the mouse pointer is placed on the title bar of the active window,
so you can drag even though you can't see the title bar. You can
experiment with some of the dialog boxes that are visible, just to see
how the procedure works.

Good luck!

Link on Index References in PDF

2007-06-27 Thread Ian Hawkins
It's called IndexRef, from www.sundorne.com. I think somebody must have
replied to Fei Min personally because she has downloaded the evaluation
version already.

I've been offline most of the day or I would have jumped in earlier.

Yes, ESCsd. (That's three separate keys, the Escape key, lowercase s,
lowercase d).

Also, on Windows, ShiftF7 will always take you back to the main
document.

Re: Change bars not conforming to the Side Closer to / Farther from Page Edge

2006-09-22 Thread Ian Hawkins
On the Right and Left master pages, check the position of the text
frames. Try shifting the text frame on the Right page slightly to the
right, and on the Left page shift to the left.

When FM places the change bars, it uses the margin width to determine
which side is closer to/farther from the edge, not the right/left page
setting as one would expect.

left side of the column through all of the document and for Side
Farther from Page Edge they will appear at the right side.

Re: Angled heads with PostScript code

2006-09-15 Thread Ian Hawkins

Hi Rick,

I've still got FM4 installation floppies hanging around. There is a
sample there that rotates text using PostScript text frames. Did you
want to rotate the cell borders as well? The sample doesn't do that, but
there might be enough there for you to figure it out for yourself. I'll
send the files to you in a separate email.

I don't know if I am remembering correctly, but I seem to recall in an
early version of FrameMaker, there was an example of using PostScript

done with PostScript text frames. If anybody remembers any details or
has any information about doing this, please let me know. Thanks.

Re: Backing up in Frame

2006-08-30 Thread Ian Hawkins
The predefined key sequence is escvP. That's three separate
keystrokes: the escape key, a lowercase v, and an uppercase P.

You can modify this for your installation by following the instructions
in Customizing_Frame_Products.pdf, found in the OnlineManuals directory
of your FrameMaker installation.

For example, to map it to AltLeft arrow, add the following to the
end of wincmds.cfg:

   Modify GotoPreviousView KeySequence ~/Left

However, in my quick testing, the jumps back only seem to work when the
destination is in the same file. If you want to return to a location in
a different file use CtrlTab to cycle through the open files.

OK, so, you know how you can do a Ctrl+Alt click on a link or
cross-reference in Frame to go to the linked topic? Well, is there a key
combination that allows you to backtrack to the topic you came from
initially (like the Back button in a browser window or Acrobat)?

Re: Smart spaces

2006-05-04 Thread Ian Hawkins
You can. Using FrameMaker, open the file
FrameMakerInstallationDirectory\fminit\custom. This is a FrameMaker
file, even without the .fm extension. This file is used as the default
template. Change the smart spaces setting and save the file.

Re: Setting page size to show bleeds

2006-02-28 Thread Ian Hawkins
I think it's a feature, instead of a bug. You need to have the full
Acrobat product to make it work properly, though. The full page is being
printed, but Acrobat hides the cropped area unless you want it shown.

After you distill, open the document in Acrobat. Change the crop
settings. In Acrobat 6.0, it's DocumentPagesCrop. I think they've
moved it for Acrobat 7, but the option should still be available.

Seriously, why shouldn't we be allowed to distill a document with both
crop marks AND bookmarks if we really want to?

Internal Xref in IDX

2006-02-20 Thread Ian Hawkins
Try IndexRef (http://sundorne.com/FrameMaker/IndexRef/indexref.htm).
It's a little utility I wrote to solve this problem. There is a 30 day
evaluation available so you make sure it works before buying it.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
