[Framers] Rick's InportSelectedFormats Script

2020-03-30 Thread Julie . Sigrist
I just downloaded Rick's new ImportSelectedFormats script this morning and
have used it multiple times already. I'm doing a complete template
redesign of our 16 company manuals and along with Rick's great scripts and
Matt Sullivan's template design training I can't believe how smoothly it
is going.

Thanks for all your great work Rick & Matt.

Re: [Framers] How would you approach this? Listing New Stuff

2020-02-18 Thread Julie . Sigrist
We create a revisions highlight page which shows the Chapter, page number,
and a brief description of the changes. The Chapter line is a link to the
chapter that has been changed. I use conditional text to indicate with
change bars and blue text where the changes have been made inside the
book.

Good morning, everyone. I'm looking for ideas.

I have a book, will call it a "Run Book".

This book contains files on how to do and fix things on our network.

I'm continually adding or updating files that describe stuff and I'd like
to send out updates to our people that lists content that has been
recently
added.

All I can think of at this point is to compare the TOC of a previous
version with the new version and turn the "differences" into a bullet
list.

Anyone do anything like this and if you do, how do you approach it?

If a List of Effective Pages is workable, Silicon Prairie Software makes

Create a condition for the new stuff.
Tag everything that?s new with the condition.
Make it a color, like black lettering on a yellow background.
Give the SMEs the doc with the conditions on and color showing.

Then they just have to go through the guide and only read what?s
highlighted with the condition.

[Framers] Installing FrameMaker and Acrobat

order that FrameMaker and Acrobat is installed.

Does it matter which software is installed first on your system? I will be
installing FrameMaker 2019 and Acrobat 2017.

[Framers] Cross reference to test in a running header/footer populated using <$marker3>

2019-05-08 Thread Julie . Sigrist
Using unstructured FrameMaker. On the master page footer I've put in
Running H/F 13 and on body page use <$marker3> to put an ATA number in
this location. I also have another location (hidden text) on the body page
that I want this ATA number to appear. I use this text to help create the
PDF bookmarks.
Is there a way to cross reference to the text in <$marker3>? The current
cross-reference format is set up as -<$pagenumber>
<$paratext[SectionTitle]> and looks like -201 Exterior Placards and
Markings. I'm currently adding the ATA number manually so the
cross-reference is 11-10-11-201 Exterior Placards and Markings. I've tried
using the paratag for the ATA number with no success.
 Appreciate any ideas.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2017 and Visio Graphics

2018-09-20 Thread Julie . Sigrist
Thank you for your replies.

This is my first time having to work with a graphic format I couldn't
reference or not having any control over the format. The book is over 3000
pages and at least 2000 of those pages are full page graphic images (all
Visio and I do not have the Visio software). If I try and embed by OLE
this many graphics, is my book going to be an unmanageable size?

Thinking I need to request the company provide me with graphics in a
FrameMaker friendly format.

[Framers] Repeat Row When Breaking in Columns

2018-09-07 Thread Julie . Sigrist
Thank you to all who replied to my question about making a Part Number row
repeat at the top of a column when the following reference rows broke at
the end of a column. The best solution is to have Rick Quatro write a
script for the function. He put together a great demo we used to present
to the company. Still waiting to hear if they will purchase, but thanks to
Rick's demo and customer service, it looks promising.

[Framers] FM 2017 Columns and Continued Lines

2018-08-27 Thread Julie . Sigrist
I work in Unstructured FrameMaker 2017 and have no background with
scripting or automating tasks. There may not be a simple solution, but
figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

I have a file I've imported from Word that contains a Part Number and then
a list of chapter references for the part. The part number and chapter
reference each have their own paragraph tag. The page is set up as 3
columns and whenever the chapter references break over to a new column the
client wants the part number repeated with (CONT) added.

The file I'm working on is 60 pages long and I have an additional file
approx same size yet to do. I can set it up manually, but would have to
redo everytime something is added or deleted to the file.

Is there any automated way of making this happen or is manually the only
solution?

Thanks/Julie

[Framers] PDF Bookmarks

2018-08-08 Thread Julie . Sigrist
The way I work around this is to type the text in FrameMaker the way I
want it to look in the PDF bookmark. Then I use a style to have it look
the way I want in Framemaker. However, I really like the idea of Rick's
script for post processing in Acrobat, especially if the text is all in so
you don't have to take the time to go back and reformat. Also, I'm working
in unstructured so it might not work the same in structured.

[Framers] FrameMaker Data in Footer

2018-05-15 Thread Julie . Sigrist
I am using 2017 unstructured FrameMaker to produce an Aircraft Maintenance
Manual Supplement which is currently in Word. At the bottom of each page
needs to be an ATA number, page #, revision # & date, and effectivity
code. I initially set these up as running headers on the master page and
used markers on the body page to fill in the information. However, I would
like to use this information to run a TOC and LEP, but seem unable to when
text frames are on the master pages.

Could some one suggest a productive and efficient way to set up this type
of a scenario? I've been using unstructured Framemaker for 10 years but
these aviation manuals I've recently been tasked with (AMM, IPC, etc.) are
more complex than the internal procedures manuals I've been doing and
would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

Re: [Framers] Transfer from FrameMaker into Word

2018-04-27 Thread Julie . Sigrist
Kevin is right that the Save to Word option from FrameMaker is not a good
idea. Since I often need to provide Word files for various people to edit,
we invest in a subscription to Adobe PDF Services (about $25 a year). I
produce a PDF file and then use this online service to produce a Word
file. Seems to work pretty good and haven't had any complaints about the
resulting Word files. I've also used this service to convert PDFs to Excel
with good results.

Re: [Framers] Frame Export to Word

2017-12-26 Thread Julie . Sigrist
I am still using Frame 10. To convert to Word I create a PDF then use the
Adobe PDF Services to convert to Word or Excel so the departments can have
a Word file to revise before sending me the changes. Works much better
than the conversion offered in Frame and is not very much to carry an
annual subscription.

If you just want to send something so that people can send comments using
track changes, then it is possible to make a PDF, and from Acrobat,
"Export to Word"

(obviously I would not recommend using the resulting Word files for other
things afterwards).

Maybe I've imaged it, but I seem to remember threads re: exporting Frame
2017 to Word? (I'm still on Frame 12)

Is this possible? Does it result in a usable doc (ie, is the formatting
decent?)

I was at a job interview today and it sounds like they could really use
the Conditional aspects of Frame in order to deliver various flavours of
the same manuals. However, they have done without a tech writer for a
while and like the fact that their engineers can simply go into a Word doc
and make changes themselves.

I thought they might try exporting to Word so the engineers could (with
Track Changes on) make edits in Word. Then the new tech writer -
preferably me ;-))) - could incorporate those changes into the Frame docs.
