Re: Saving back from FM v11 to FM v9

2014-01-16 Thread Karen Mann
Thank you for responding. The files were in 8 different languages and the
Russian files were all in question marks.

We had a situation where our SDL (translation software) version had to be put
to a FM ver 7 mif (which does not recognize Unicode) because SDL did not
recognize FM11 mif. A while ago SDL advanced to recognize FM 11 mif. I didn't
know and one of the Framers informed me to save file to FM11 mif, open mif in
FM ver9 and save to .fm. It worked! Caution...make sure you either
distinctively name the different versions or put them in differently named
folders/directories.

I would like to add, you have to delete the FM 11 book file and create a new
book file in FM9, and always open the file from within the proper FM version.

Love our Framers...

Thanks everyone. Job done on time.

Saving back from FM v11 to FM v9

2014-01-13 Thread Karen Mann
Hi everyone,
Yep, got a problem.
Customer using FM 11 wants some files saved back to FM Ver 9. Has always worked
before not now. Using Times New Roman font. Individually saved FM 11 as .mif 7
- then opened .mif 7 in FM 9 and resaved as .fm for FM 9. Open the new FM 9
.fm file through FM9 and it opens the file. This time the file shows up in
question marks. Have redone it 7 times results are same. Did I miss something...
Anyone else having this issue?

Thank you in advance for your efforts.

FrameMake 9 unresponsive

2012-02-01 Thread Karen Mann
Hi everyone,

Still having issues with FrameMaker 9 (all patches) becoming unresponsive;
Panel actions don't work or panels don't show up at all, with only FrameMaker (
2 or 3 section of a book open) open. I noticed when that happens, if I have the
Paragraph Panel open, that a small white strip shows up in the left side, top
of the Panel. FM Won't stay open longer than about 5 or 10 min if I am creating
or changing tabs, even if I am not using the ruler to change the tabs. I close
and reopen FM and sometimes it works and sometimes I have to once again reboot.
Also have the IE Explorer stopping and starting - are the two related in any
way?

I am using Windows 7 Pro (all patches), Microsoft Office 2010 on a Dell T5500
64 bit quad with 12 G of RAM and I have 800 G available on drive. NVIDIA Quadro
2000 card with 1 G Graphics Memory, display adapter drive is up to date
8.17.12.5929 and a Samsung LED 23 in Monitor SyncMaster.

Is FM 9 this buggy or is there a setting that is causing this issue, ANYONE
have insight?

Thank you in advance for your time.

RE: FrameMaker 9

2011-05-20 Thread Karen Mann
Thank you, for your attention. It appears others have this same issue with the
paragraph designer etc.

I have had my T5500, 64 bit, Win7 for about 6 mo. The first T5500 I purchased
was crashing all the time so Dell replaced it and upgraded from a dual to a
quad and added 4 g of ram to make the 12 g and upgraded the graphics card...
trying to keep their customer happy.

I have more RAM than our old server did. Too bad Adobe is non-responsive; they
should post a fix.
If anyone at any time finds a solution to this Adobe bug I would appreciate
an e-mail.

Thank you again for your time and response, I really appreciate this forum.

I'm afraid it may not be worth very much as a data point, because there is a
world of difference between Windows XP and any 64-bit version of Windows Vista
or (more likely in Karen's case because she does refer to a new Dell) Windows
7. When the issue is the stability (or lack thereof) of an application, the
specific version of the OS is likely to be at least as much a factor as any of
the hardware details with the possible exception of the amount of RAM. And the
migration from 32-bit to 64-bit addressing was a major change that seems to
have caused compatibilty and/or stability issues with a lot of apps.

FrameMaker 9 crashing in Windows 7

2011-01-28 Thread Karen Mann
Hi everyone,

Has anyone else had the following issues.
I am having an issue with FrameMaker 9 and Windows 7 (both have all their
updates). I am unable to select the Paragraph Designer icons and the edits you
make at that point are not saved. FM9 stops responding and/or crashes and
says Application has to close. It's causing a lot of issues and extra time to
go over the documents again and again.

This is a new Dell desktop with 6 G of Ram, so I am not pushing it with only
FM9 and Outlook and explorer.
Called Dell and agent said Windows Essentials causes a lot of issues so I

FrameMaker 9 crashing in Windows 7

2011-01-28 Thread Karen Mann
Hi everyone,

Has anyone else had the following issues.
I am having an issue with FrameMaker 9 and Windows 7 (both have all their
updates). I am unable to select the Paragraph Designer icons and the edits you
make at that point are not saved. FM9 stops "responding" and/or crashes and
says Application has to close. It's causing a lot of issues and extra time to
go over the documents again and again.

This is a new Dell desktop with 6 G of Ram, so I am not pushing it with only
FM9 and Outlook and explorer.
Called Dell and agent said Windows Essentials causes a lot of issues so I
uninstalled all the components. It's now a little better with InDesign but not
FrameMaker 9.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,

Sorry for the delay getting back to you, got sidelined by a big job.

Just read this again. - Usually one or two books each book having 1 to 40

I presume you saved your changes before closing? I don't know what you're

You should keep this discussion on the list where there are people who use FM 9
on Win 7 (I don't). And providing more information would help them help you --
for starters, how many FM files are open when the problems occur, how big they
are, whether they contain embedded graphics or OLE objects, and from Task
Manager, how much memory FM is using and how much physical memory is available.

out of memory error

2010-11-08 Thread Karen Mann
Good morning everyone,
My issue:
I recently purchased 3 production machines. New 64 bit, quad core with 6 G
memory.
We use FrameMaker almost exclusively. I was working in FrameMaker 9 for about
3 hours. During that time the I had opened and closed Outlook 2010 so the only
other software running was McAfee Managed Security.
I noticed that when I clicked on a tab in a panel it would not select, and the
edits I was making were not holding. Then, I got an alert that I should close
some windows because there was not enough memory (?). Which happens
periodically.

We had been using single processors with 1.5 G of memory and of course we were
having all kinds of issues. We upgraded so we would not be getting these errors.
Anyone else having an issue with memory...Is there a setting for FM 32 or 64
bit in FM9 in Win7?

Much appreciation, and thanks in advance for your help.

FM file print erroring out

2010-11-04 Thread Karen Mann
Hi guys,
Sure could use some help on this.
I have a manual that is giving the following error whenever I try to print from
the FM (9) file. FM has all updates.
The printout errors out on at the same place every time. But that should not
be the problem because the manual prints the first 9 pages (with graphics)
properly. The whole manual is in Panatone Reflex Blue M. I had the
illustrators resave the graphics on page 9 to 11 and I have checked and
rechecked those pages for font errors etc.
I have even changed printer drivers. We have many other manual of the same and
they do not error out on FM printing. Following is the error I am receiving.

ERROR: undefined
OFFENDING COMMAND: get
STACK:
/CIDFont
-dictionary-
/HeiseiMin-W3
/Serif
-dictionary-
/Adobe-Japan1
-dictionary-
/ct-StyleDicts
False

I have to make a pdf and print from the pdf.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Thanks one and all for your suggestions.

I finally got the manual to print on an HP Laserjet 5si Printer.
The illustrator also found the graphic that error'ed out first had some black

Thanks again.

Thanks Bethany. It is such a vague error referring to fonts - might also have
to do with the HP LaserJet 8100 printer engine. I am using a new 64 bit Dell
and I'm thinking the 64 bit drivers leave a lot to be desired.
Also the Win7 pro OS has it's issues.

I will ask the illustrator to check for a Photoshop element.
I finally got the job to print on an old HP Laserjet 5Si printer.

Hi Karen,

This has happened to me if I have a file (imported by reference) from
Illustrator that has a PhotoShop element in it. I don't know why it happens,
but if I either create that image all in PhotoShop or take the PhotoShop
element out of the .ai file, then it prints fine. Might that be the issue here?

FM v9 crashes when trying to rename file inside of FM

2010-09-10 Thread Karen Mann
Hi guys anyone having this same problem; I am running a 64 bit machine w/6 Gig

When I try to rename a file within a book within FM v9 it crashes the program.
Sometimes just crashes for no reason, stops working - a lot. By the way it also
did it running a 32 bit machine.
Don't have that issue with other programs.

Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Of Autonumbers, Symbols, and FM 9

2009-04-01 Thread Karen Mann
Thanks Jim, I had the same issue, legacy, importing etc but with the bullet and
symbol. When I applied the bullet tag my text went to Greek and the bullet
symbol was another symbol.
Ugh! I left out a step so when Megha tried to assist she could not.
Sorry Megha, I had so many deadlines and FM9 bugs were bouncing all over me.

In Paragraph Designer autonumber I highlighted the bullet, went to Character
map got the bullet, went to Character Designer sized the bullet and did Global
update, then did a global apply. Have been doing this for all docs. I did not
do a re-import. We do 99% legacy and they are very individual so most of the
time a template import is not effective.
I however do not have the CleanImport plug-in.

This Framers thing is the greatest!
Thanks all.

Subject: Of Autonumbers, Symbols, and FM 9

I'm running into a seemingly strange phenomenon with FM 9. I'm working with a
lot of legacy documents that have formatting issues, and part of my workflow
involves importing and replacing formats using a template formatted the way I
wish it to be -- typically, with the very useful CleanImport plug-in.

In FM 9, I'm finding that when I do this import, I now get the unexpected side
effect that the symbol used in the Autonumber Format area of the Paragraph
Designer changes. For example:

Original Format

Font

Unintentionally Modified Format

Font

ð\t

Wingdings

š\t

Wingdings

à\t

Wingdings

‡\t

Wingdings

I'm not sure how or why this changes. I have developed a workaround. I go to my
source document, do a Global Update, Numbering Properties, for each of the
paragraph formats in question, applying this to all paragraphs in the source
document that have the individual tags in question. I am not changing the
formats in any way, simply re-applying them. Then I re-import the paragraph and
character formats to all of the remaining files, and then the paragraphs with
these various list bullets, for want of a better term, are all restored to
normalcy.

So it's not the end of the world, just an unwelcome extra step. Any ideas?

Jim

Of Autonumbers, "Symbols," and FM 9

This "Framers" thing is the greatest!
Thanks all.

Subject: Of Autonumbers, "Symbols," and FM 9

I'm running into a seemingly strange phenomenon with FM 9. I'm working with a
lot of legacy documents that have formatting issues, and part of my workflow
involves importing and replacing formats using a template formatted the way I
wish it to be -- typically, with the very useful CleanImport plug-in.

In FM 9, I'm finding that when I do this import, I now get the unexpected side
effect that the symbol used in the Autonumber Format area of the Paragraph
Designer changes. For example:

Original Format

Font

Unintentionally Modified Format

Font

?\t

Wingdings

?\t

Wingdings

?\t

Wingdings

?\t

Then I re-import the paragraph and
character formats to all of the remaining files, and then the paragraphs with
these various "list bullets," for want of a better term, are all restored to
normalcy.

So it's not the end of the world, just an unwelcome extra step. Any ideas?

Jim

FM 9

2009-03-25 Thread Karen Mann
Like the new features (without the bugs would be better), one thing I
haven't mentioned the product should have a way and time to empty it's
temp file like right after you close a document.

It is r r e a ly slow loading the program even after you empty the
temp file - and wouldn't mind so much but a bouncing FM9 or a loading
bar or something should let you know the program is on it's way in.

Adobe Techs have been great in trying to address the issues especially
the features the patch broke.

Harder to work in FM9 when you don't have 2 screens.

Need to remove old font references in legacy doc

2009-03-22 Thread Karen Mann
Has anyone else had this problem?

Since moving to FM9 and the ultimate change to ttf or ot fonts, I am
changing type1 fonts to tt or ot fonts; but now the font references of
fonts that are no longer in the system make the document look as though
they are still in the document. I would like to know where/how to remove
the old legacy type 1 fonts references.

Many thanks if anyone can assist.

Ref: PDF font issue

2009-03-20 Thread Karen Mann

FM7.2: PDF okay; font: Avant-Garde - Type 1 font ok.

   - FM8: PDF okay; font: Avant-Garde - transition version

   - FM9: PDF NOT okay; font: Times! - Times is a Type 1 font. FM9 does
not like Type 1. Change to Type II or Open Type ttf.

There is more to this XP/Vista users. If you have or have had ATM
installed at one time, and you uninstalled it but did not apply the
hot-fix after the uninstall, your OS could be corrupted from having the
ATM (either Deluxe or Light) installed you might have font mapping
issues. (Per Adobe and our very recent catastrophe.) Also, fonts from
1995 and older will not always show up. Times just simply would not
print from FM. Had to made a PDF and then we could print the document.
That's when we updated from 7.2 to 9, and changed our use from Type 1 to
Type II and Open Type of either otf or ttf.

Ref: FM 9 bugs - I have noticed.

2009-03-18 Thread Karen Mann
1. FrameMaker searches and finds items, but rather than displaying the
page that contains the item, it displays the first page of the chapter
that contains the item. The found item may be many pages away, and is
not always highlighted. I sometimes see the highlighted item flash on
screen for a moment before the page jumps back to the first page of the
chapter.

2. Building blocks now missing after 9.0.1 update.

3. Have had bullets change size and all conform to one size instead of
the 2 different assigned tags. Have to save Book after making changes to
part of the book.

4. Crash on printing from other print driver than the PDF.

5. Now cannot undo if graphic inserted and I don't want it, I have to
close without saving and then reopen to start all over.
