Subject: FrameMaker and read-only files

Hello all,

We are using Tortoise SVN to version control our FM files. It's mainly
working fine but we are having problems getting FrameMaker to detect a
locked file. You can set files to be locked when you edit them, but
FrameMaker doesn't seem to pay any attention to the lock UNTIL you try
and save the file. So you could open a locked file, work on it for an
hour or two and only be notified when you try and save it. Not ideal.

What we think is happening is that the file being locked is set to
'read-only', but FrameMaker isn't detecting that, as it has an internal
locking mechanism which looking for files that are currently being
edited by others. So it seems to be ignoring the read-only files.

My question is: Is there anyway to get FrameMaker to flag, ON OPEN,
whether a file is read-only or not. Or is this not a FrameMaker issue at
all but a 'nuance' of Tortoise?

Any and all suggestions gratefully welcomed. This isn't a showstopper
but very much in the 'annoyance' category!

Thanks in advance,

Gordon McLean

RE: Creating x-refs to files using a relative path

2006-11-28 Thread Patterson, Jan
Janice, we used a similar file organization at my former employer, which
was a couple of years and versions ago, and we had extensive
cross-references throughout our library of manuals.

If I remember right, to make the cross-references active in the PDFs,
all of the FrameMaker books had to be open at the time the PDFs were
created. Maybe somebody else can confirm this.

Subject: Creating x-refs to files using a relative path

We use Windows XP operating system, Frame 7.2 (some of us may still be
on 7.0), and Acrobat 7.0.

We organize our folders to have a main folder for the manual. That
folder contains 2 sub-folders (fm_source and docs). fm_source contains
all the Framemaker files that make up the book. In addition to the book
and generated files, each Framemaker file is a chapter in the book.

We have set up x-refs so that it is not a problem cross-referencing from
one chapter to another within the book. My question, is, how do we set
up cross-references so that we can cross-reference to a file (in our
case, a
chapter) in another book (which is embedded within a different folder
and sub-folder). When we tried to do this using the same method for
setting up x-refs within the book, it worked in FrameMaker, but it did
not work once we created our PDFs.

For example, we created a x-ref from Chapter 1 in Book A to Chapter 2 in
Book B. We created a PDF of Book A and a PDF of Book B. When we click
the link in Book A, it says it cannot find the file, and it gives the
whole path of where it is looking for Book B.

Do you know what we are doing wrong? Or, how we should be doing this?

Thank you,

RE: Formula for Tech Writing Lead Time?

2006-10-05 Thread Patterson, Jan

How many pages can a technical writer produce in x amount of time? It
depends. If you've been with your current employer for a while and
you've already completed several projects (manuals), then you could
gather metrics from what you've already produced to create an average
hours-per-page formula.

Is anyone aware of a formula for how many words/pages a Tech Writer
can produce in a given period of time? I am being asked to take on
additional manuals and upper management wants some numbers to justify
additional head count that will be needed. I can probably come up with
an estimate based on what we produce today, but I was wondering if some
kind of standard already exists.

RE: Syntax for if/then statement

2006-06-29 Thread Patterson, Jan
The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition, section 5.182, says:

Correlative conjunctions are used in pairs, often to join successive
clauses that depend on each other to form a complete thought . . . {If
the first claim is true, then the second claim must be false} . . . Some
examples of correlative conjunctions are as-as, if-then, either-or,
neither-nor . . .

Subject: OT: Syntax for if/then statement

All,

I am hoping the fellow writers on this list can provide some information
for this request. Another writer here at Jeppesen and I have always used
the following syntax for a conditional/causal statement: If blah,
blah, then blah, blah. We have a new editor that just joined who is
in the process of defining our styles and standards. Obviously, everyone
has an opinion about what is right and what is wrong in editing . .
.in many cases, it's so subjective. That said, when we have our
editorial meetings about defining our styles and standards, you need to
be prepared with some factual support for a certain type of style or
standard - not just the emotional because we've always done it this
way. Years ago, I had such a reference for writing if/then statements
this way - I don't remember which manual I referenced. Our new editor
wants to add the word and to such statements - if blah, blah, AND
then blah, blah. Both I and the other writer disagree with the editor
on this one - it should be just if/then - no and. I have tried for the
life of me to find a documentation reference that would support this
syntax (something like Sun's Read Me First guide, etc), and although I
know I had one in the past, I can't find it now. Googling only leads me
to programming references - the thin thread here would be since we are
writing software documentation, if/then, would make sense, since that's
where the if/then statement syntax was developed, but. . . .

Any and all references/advice would be much appreciated.
