Re: [Framers] Have not seen any emails in this list since ...

2023-01-24 Thread Richard Pesant
I can confirm that Frame 10 works just fine under Windows 11. I mainly use
Frame 17, but I still have some clients who require Frame 10.
I use Frame since version 3 and this list has always been a wonderful source of
information and a life saver.

Per discussions on this list from September and October of 2021, Frame works
fine under Windows 11. Am still running it under Windows 10 here, so no
firsthand experiences with Frame and Win11.

Re: [Framers] Frame "Counter" Issue

2022-05-05 Thread Richard Pesant
Hi Alison,

You have one counter using two formats.
You must use two counters, one for each format as follows:
"Instruction1": < >.\t
"Instruction+": < >.\t
"Instruction Alpha-a": < >)\t
"Instruction Alpha-+": < >)\t

There are other ways to do this. This is only one way.

Windows 10
Up-to-date Frame subscription

I've had to add in a layer of alpha-based "sub-instructions" in my manual
formatting-but Frame is not cooperating. Normally I use plain bullets, but
these new items must be completed in a specific order, hence the alpha
numbering (per the manual conventions).

Numeric instruction counter: starting at "1." and incrementing
===
"Instruction1": .\t
"Instruction+": .\t

Alpha sub-instruction counter: starting at "a)" and incrementing

"Instruction Alpha-a": )\t
"Instruction Alpha-+": )\t

The numeric counters work fine by themselves and the alpha counters work fine.

However, if I follow the final alpha counter with another numeric counter,
instead of using the next number (ie, picking up from the last numeric
counter), Frame calculates the numeric counter by translating the final alpha
counter into a number and increments that (see step 5 (which should be step 3)
of "How it's currently working"). Weirdly, it follows the wrong counter but
uses the correct formatting.

I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but I have idea what it is.

I don't use this often, but it's crucial in a few places in a particular manual
(which was originally written in Word where it works just fine).

Alison

How it should work:

1. first numeric instruction
2. second numeric instruction
 a) first alpha sub-instruction
 b) second alpha sub-instruction
 c) third alpha sub-instruction
 d) fourth alpha sub-instruction
3. third numeric instruction
4. fourth numeric instruction
5. fifth numeric instruction

How it's currently working:
==
1. first numeric instruction
2. second numeric instruction
 a) first alpha sub-instruction
 b) second alpha sub-instruction
 c) third alpha sub-instruction
 d) fourth alpha sub-instruction
5. third numeric instruction
6. fourth numeric instruction
7. fifth numeric instruction

Re: [Framers] "Secret" Freeze Pagination Feature

2017-04-25 Thread Richard Pesant
Hi Stefan,

I used this feature intensively back in the 90s, with FM 5.6/6 if I recall
correctly. Back then, I was working for Nortel Networks producing 9000+ pages
libraries. As we were developing a new release, we were also supporting up to
four previous releases (for corrections and bug fixes). Using the Freeze
pagination feature allowed us to provide our customers with only the changed
pages. There were some bugs (mainly with tables spanning over one page) and, if
I remember, these bugs could not be fixed. We had to break each table by page
before freezing pagination but all in all, it worked fine. I was not aware that
the feature was still available. I think that keeping it available with some
mention and explanation of the table bug would not hurt.

Regards,
Richard Pesant

Objet : [Framers] "Secret" Freeze Pagination Feature

Hi Framers,

Klaus Daube reminded me a few days ago, that there are some "secret" features
in FrameMaker, that are still present in the product today, but are no longer
in the UI nor documented, especially "Freeze pagination" and "Open Heroic". I'm
currently going through them and discuss them with the product managers and
documentation team.

So, one of these "secret features" is "Freeze pagination": It's still present
in FM 2017 and can be accessed with Esc-p-z.

For those who do not know the feature: Let's say you have a 100-page document
with one text flow. On the master page you have a footer with a page count
variable (<$curpagenum>). Now you can "freeze pagination" which will disconnect
all text frames (that is, you get 100 disconnected pages with a Text Flow "A").
Now you can add new disconnected pages between other pages (called "point
pages"). Or if you are at the end of a page and add new content, a new page is
added right next to the current page with a connect text frame to the previous
page. The page number will show a "point page number" (e.g. when you add pages
after page 7, they will be numbered as 7.1, 7.2 etc.).
The idea of this feature back in the days was to create "revision pages"
("point pages").

That said, I understand how the feature works, but in more than 20 years I have
never used it myself (never had a use case for it) nor met anyone ever using it
and all people I have asked in the last days who know this feature told me the
same (never had a use case).

My question to you:
- Has anyone ever used this feature when it was still present in the UI many
versions back?
- Is anyone still using it?
- What is the use case scenario that you can think of where it still might be
useful?

Your feedback will help us to have a new look at this feature and discuss what
to do with it (bring it back to the UI and document it or keep it hidden or
maybe even remove it).

Looking forward to your feedback,
Stefan Gentz

While very true (you can't have a piece of paper with only one face,
at least not without applying a hefty dose of quantum physics) this
shouldn't affect the book from chapter to chapter IF the book file has
its own settings and is not inheriting pagination from the files.

Double check the book file's pagination settings and make sure you
have nothing in there that would possibly specify a consistently even
pagination. No set starting page side, no "make page count even", etc.

Framemaker uses

2008-05-16 Thread Richard Pesant
Actually, there are 2 major problems with Word's autonumbering feature. The
first one is setting it up properly, for which we do have control. The
second one is stability, for which we have absolutely no control. From my
own experience, I have not yet found a way to get stable numbering in a Word
doc. Period. On the other hand, this is one of Frame's great advantage.
Stability.

I have to agree with Deirdre. I struggled with the same autonumbering

Nope, did same thing to me first couple of times I tried. Finally, the
installer got traction and it updated. I tried updates on the rest of
the suite and same thing happened, so I gave up.

RE: RE: Keyboard shortcut for copyright symbol

2008-01-25 Thread Richard Pesant
Hi Carla,

Are you talking about the AutoText plugin from Silicon Prairies? If so, can
you provide details on how you set up your AutoText.fm doc? Maybe I am
missing something but I just cannot figure out how to get the symbol from
the AutoText command.

Thanks,
Richard

Compatibility between FM7.1 and 7.2

2006-08-15 Thread Richard Pesant
Can anyone let me know if documents created with v7.2 can be opened with
v7.1 without having to mif them? We are presently using v7.1 and need to
purchase more licenses. Presently, we do not have an XML requirement but
it is under consideration. So my question is: if we start purchasing
v7.2 licenses, do we have to upgrade the v7.1 stations at the same time,
or can we do it only when XML becomes a requirement?

Thanks,

Richard
