[Framers] Bad Character Data

2018-11-30 Thread White, Scott
Maybe a little off topic but does effect FrameMaker imports.

We build industrial content - power tools, cutting tools, safety supplies,
etc. - by copying and scraping web sites and pasting content into Filemaker.
Filemaker then exports out the rich content and associated images into a file
where I can import into Framemaker or import into a sql database for web use.

Over the last few years we have been experiencing introduction of bad end of
line characters (0x0) with this process causing our xml or .mif output to fail.
I have to use a text editor to find the offending characters, fix in the
database and then reexport.

Just wondering if anyone out there is experiencing this issue and what are you
doing to combat this?

Thanks.

[Framers] Structured Index help

2018-03-09 Thread White, Scott
I just got off the phone with a client and they are running a structured
FrameMaker document. I have never used structured but have always used
unstructured for our catalog pages.

They are wanting help in creating an index from a book. Is there any difference
between running an index in structured vs unstructured?

The client is using FM17, I have FM15.

Thanks

My client was running Microsoft Security Antivirus and it was indeed not
allowing PDF creation. They couldn’t just do exceptions but had to uninstall

in a timely manner.
What are some of the things that he should check for that may be causing this

He and I are both running Windows 7 enterprise, 64 bit, 8+ gb RAM.

thought it would be appropriate to post this.

Hi Everyone,

As many of you know, I was supposed to be on vacation this week, cycling
across New York State with 17 other guys. During my last few training rides,
I experienced some discomfort in my chest. It was a concern because I am in
pretty good shape with almost 800 miles on the bike so far this summer. I
had a stress test on Friday, and the results showed an 80% chance of a
blockage in one of my cardiac arteries. Monday I went into the hospital for
an angiogram, with the anticipation of having the blockage opened and a
stent put in. However, the test showed a couple of areas of blockage, one
being in an area that can't be opened with a stent. So on Wednesday around
12:45 pm, I am going to have open heart surgery with at least a double
bypass. I will be in the hospital for 3-5 days and hopefully experience a
quick recovery at home. I should be back to work late next week.

Those of you who know me well understand that I have a deep abiding
relationship with Jesus Christ. I received Him as my Savior on April 6, 1984
when I was twenty-five years old. Because He has forgiven me of my sins, I
know that when I die, I will be with Him in heaven. I am still a sinner and
don't deserve heaven, but because of His death on the cross and subsequent
resurrection, He gives eternal life to those who receive Him by faith.

That said, I am still fairly young (53), and have some young kids left to
raise. So, if you are given to prayer, please pray for Sherry and I this
Wednesday. Finally, thank you all for being a part of my life. The great
people that I work with is an important part of making my work so
satisfying.

Installing trail vesion of Framemaker 10

I have a client trying to install the trial version of Framemaker 10 on her mac
in a Parallels/Windows 7 enviroment. She is running OS10.7 and the latest

All she sees when she looks in the downloaded folder is a folder called deploy,
a folder called packages, a folder called payloads and a folder called
resources. No installer. What is she missing or not doing?

Thanks.

Installing trail vesion of Framemaker 10

2012-04-23 Thread White, Scott
I have a client trying to install the trial version of Framemaker 10 on her mac
in a Parallels/Windows 7 enviroment. She is running OS10.7 and the latest
edition of Parallells.
All she sees when she looks in the downloaded folder is a folder called deploy,
a folder called packages, a folder called payloads and a folder called
resources. No installer. What is she missing or not doing?

Thanks.

Image Save As Discovery

2011-08-15 Thread White, Scott
Folks
We are putting together our latest 2000+-page catalog with Frame 9.0.
We use .tif images imported into our templates.

In a small section I discovered images were importing as small
thumbnails - 4 across and 4 down -- into an anchored frame.

I opened the image in photoshop CS5 and it looked fine, saved as .tif, 8
bit, no additional channels, cmyk. No compression, byte order Macintosh.
Just as I need them to be. But then I discovered this batch was saved
with a pixel order of per channel (RRGGBB) instead of interleaved
(RGBRGB). When I resaved the image like normal using interleaved pixel
order, frame imported the image and displayed it correctly.

I've never seen this before and thought I would share.

RE: Slightly OT: Frame 10 landscape pages not recognized in Acrobat X

2011-03-16 Thread White, Scott
I just finished an 800-page catalog using save as PDF. It was suggested
to use this option since we were running four-color. Well it worked and
didn't. It took all of our color .tif images and .eps images and
rendered them correctly. My pantone colors for section bleed tabs, all
but one, came out as spot color and had to be converted at the printer.

My Helvetica fraction fonts got substituted and I had two process the
files again, the same way, and they came out with the correct fonts.
Spent WAY too much time fixing files.

Also, when I ran the index my page numbers came out backwards in some
cases. As an example -- 546-548, 13-18, 20 -- instead of in order.

Frame 9 has really steered me back to my old MAC, running classic and
Frame 7. That was consistent and results were as expected.

Good day everyone,

As I understand it, the main problem with Save as PDF has always been
what you have defined as your Default Printer. If it was anything other
than Adobe PDF, then you had no end of problems. It was my understanding
that with Frame 7, Save as PDF would automatically use the Adobe PDF
print definitions and thus work as advertised. I've never had a problem
with it, maybe because my Default Printer under Frame is always Adobe
PDF.

As always, YMMV.

Hi Art,

Sadly, regardless of the fact that Adobe has owned both Frame and
Acrobat for quite a while, the collective wisdom on this list is that
Save as PDF should not be used. Ever. Many folks have posted problems
with this feature ranging across four versions of Frame that I know of,
and I'm a relative newcomer. A few people have posted that it works for
them, and more power to them. For myself, I've given up ever even
attempting it.

List export

Just wondering if there is a way to export more than one paragraph tag
in a row along with the page number.
What I'm trying to accomplish is:
Table Paragraph tag A Table Paragraph tag B Table Paragraph tag C page

So when I save and open in excel I get all the tags and page number in

Thanks in advance.

Framemaker 9 Index

2011-03-09 Thread White, Scott
I ran the index for our 800-page catalog. The index behaved as I
expected but in some instances the index page entries looked like this:
Tapes...568-572, 13-14, 16, 18-22

Is there a setting I missed? This is the first time I ran an index with
Frame 9. I very well could have missed something.

Frame 9 running on Parallels, MAC OSX

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you're indexing a number of .fm docs within a book, check that the
pagination is set so that it flows properly from beginning to end - this
looks like it's picking up index marker hits in multiple .fm docs that
have different pagination rules applied. So within that doc it makes
sense, but on the book level it doesn't.

CMYK coming out as Spot

2011-03-01 Thread White, Scott
Well I thought I had my color issue solved. I was having my pantone
color come out as spot when reviewed in acrobat. I had the color in the
table and I discovered that the table treats my pantone as a spot.
So now I have a bleed running on the right of my right-hand pages. And
now my pantone is again coming out as spot instead of cmyk.
I checked my color settings yet again and my pantone 165cvu is set
correctly. But frame thinks otherwise. Any suggestions yet again would
be helpful.

Pantone Color problem resolved

2011-02-23 Thread White, Scott
As I posted earlier, I was trying to use a pantone color and it kept
coming out as spot, even though it was set as a process color.

I have since discovered, that since I was using this in a table as a
fill, that Framemaker was treating the table fill as a spot color. As
soon as I removed the fill and put a box behind the table with the
pantone color of choice it came out just fine.
For a footer this is fine, as I am using. But what a pain if you wanted
color in your tables.

Another interesting way Frame treats our friend color.

Scott,

This is likely a PDF /CropBox understanding issue, which mean that
everything might be OK afterall. Unfortunately, the term CropBox might
bring confusion although the concept is clear.

/CropBox defines the *visible* page size in a viewer. CropBox has
effectively NOTHING to do with trimming according to crop marks - although
the name says so.

/MediaBox defines the RAW print paper size, ie. when you print a letter
size on legal or A3 paper, you'll see the cut marks and use a hand-held
knife to cut :-)

/ArtBox is of absolutely no use if you wish a reference to a fixed region
(I've NEVER understood the significant value of the ArtBox EXCEPT when
placing PDF as substitute for EPS -- in which case it's totally meaningless
to apply crop marks (because they will become art))

/TrimBox, which defines the true cutting edges in real-world production
anno 2011.

In many cases ignorant designers and quite a few software packages sets both
TrimBox and CropBox *wrong* and in some cases with reversed meaning --
adding huge to overall confusion.

Personally, I discarded the Save As PDF in Frame 9 a long time ago. I did
that when I discovered it was based on more than 10 years old PostScript
Level 1 code stolen from antediluvian Unix versions of Framemaker.

So, printing to PDF from Frame is *still* ultimately the best bet *IF* and
*ONLY* if you work with RGB bitmap art (TIFF, BMP, JPG) and avoid spot
colours like the plague.

If you use CMYK TIFF, don't go to print at all *unless* you can
*successfully* use Save As PDF *or* persuade your printer to accept
pre-separated PostScript or PDF for print. And -- in this case -- don't say
go without a final proof.

Unfortunately I can't offer a bullet-proof work-around. However, my Publi
PDF software has made quite a difference for SEVERAL Framemaker users
worldwide over the past decade, of which MANY users subscribe to this list.

I have paid enormous amounts to Flexera Software to keep an Activation
Service alive for Publi PDF, and through the past 3 years the residue from
the Publi PDF *single user* edition has been approx the price of one or two
(very, very, very good though) Italian Amarone(s). Anyway, today I'm working
on other very promising projects and really only win nothingness by keeping
the Publi PDF client licensed. Hence, Publi PDF - in the form most users
know it -- is going FREEWARE quite soon (USD 850 per license today).

I really think Publi PDF could help you with your catalogue, but you'll have
to experiment with it. As FREEWARE Publi PDF is *effectively* unsupported.

A good place to start is here: http://www.grafikhuset.net/PubliPDF/

You'll find a LOT of information here:
http://www.grafikhuset.net/PubliPDF/techdocs.htm. You MUST read this stuff
if you REALLY want to know what Publi PDF can do for you. I don't answer
questions that is already answered in the techdocs section.

The latest *official* single user edition is revision 1.50.0432. This is
available for download from: http://grafikhuset.net/PubliPDF/download.htm.
This edition works with Distiller 8.X to X and GPL GhostScript 8.70 or later
(that's not true, older versions are supported, but DON'T use them). This
version may work on Vista and Windows 7 if you understand how to disable
UAC. If not, wait for version 1.9.X.

The latest *real* Publi PDF Client is revision 1.9.X. It will be published
to http://grafikhuset.net/PubliPDF/download.htm as soon as I can find the
time for it. This version runs smoothly on Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), and I

RE: Registration marks missing

2011-02-07 Thread White, Scott
All your suggestions do not work for save as PDF with Registration
Marks.

But, when I use the print option with Adobe PDF as my printer it works.

Has anyone else run Save as PDF and gotten registration marks?

However, I was under the impression that printing to PDF is not the
right way to create a color print-ready pdf. Colors are all off.

Second, I have access to Frame on the Mac and I'm just wondering if it
would be safer to use that knowing I will get the color and output I
expect. This is our new company's first 1,000-page catalog and want to
avoid every pitfall I can.

Could I do this catalog in Frame 9, save as .mif 7 and open on the old
Mac version to do my color output? A thought.

Again, the color frustrations raise their ugly heads with Frame.

You'll need the extra inch around the page to add the registration

If this fails, try printing to PS and then distill instead of saving to

Do the registration marks now show?

Changing the page size will not resolve your problem since that will
only move the marks further beyond your reach (they exist beyond the
ArtBox that you see in the preview image of the file). It is probable
the marks are there but that you just cannot see them.

Here is something you can try:
Open the pdf in Acrobat and select Advanced Print Production Crop
 Pages
With Show All Boxes selected, choose BleedBox from the drop down list
Set the Units to your preferred measure
Enter the distance you require into the Margin Controls Field (say
10mm)
 Click OK.

 Good Luck

Did you set your page size large enough to hold the registration marks?
If the document is 11x17, you need to set the page size to something
like 12x18 to provide room to show the registration marks.

Registration marks missing

2011-02-04 Thread White, Scott
I was trying to do a pdf output for print with Registration marks. I
didn't get any marks in the rendered PDF.
I used save as pdf, selected registration marks western, printed to
11x17 output just to see, and I got all I expected but the registration
marks.

Mac OS10 running parallels > window 7 home premium. Framemaker 9.0.

Thoughts?

FM9: correcting CMYK colors in PDF following save-as

2010-10-14 Thread White, Scott
Again, working with color in Framemaker rears its ugly head. With
Framemaker 10 in development I hope the team will take note that the
treatment of color in Framemaker is not adequate and work on resolving
the 4-color, spot, and tint issues that Framemaker has added to our jobs
since the banishment of Framemaker on the MAC.
I live your pain Becky.

Subject: FM9: correcting CMYK colors in PDF following save-as

Using FM9.0p237. I am a longtime user.

I will be using FM9 to create PDFs for 4-color printing. Ach, the
headaches! I know I have to use Save-As and de-select Convert CMYK
Colors to RGB. (I know that this means FM uses its own Unix Postscript
generator, and not the Industry Standards Distiller options that I
*wish* it would use.)

I do indeed get a pure CMYK PDF. Onscreen, the colors look good, but my
printer tells me the color values are wrong. Example: CustomBlue is
defined as 69.18.23.1 in FM, but it comes out as 68.8,32.2,0,0 in the
PDF-very different color.

Unless someone knows some FM fix for this, I will be correcting colors
in the PDF.

My question: Can people recommend the best software for this? Is Acrobat
Pro 9 good enough? should I get the PitstopPro plugin? Other? We can't
buy anything too expensive-can go up to $800 max.

I hope that this is an OK question to ask. My apologies if it is not,
please ignore if that is the case.

Many thanks for your help,
Becky

Virtual Box

2010-09-30 Thread White, Scott
We are running parallels on our macs here so that we can run Frame. We
have run across a like program from Oracle called virtual box. Has
anyone heard of it? Any feed back would be appreciated.
