OT: Podcast Question
Sorry for the OT, but this silly little problem has to have been answered somewhere before and I just can't find a clue... I'm using iTunes to download a set of daily podcasts because the servers here don't have the bandwidth to support streaming. I have set up the download to check for new episodes daily, and that works fine. However, the first time I configured the application, it was @ 7:53 AM. Now that is the scheduled time for the daily update. It would be a whole lot slicker (and conserve bandwidth) if I could set that update to happen at 2:AM. I tried all of the controls I could find through the UI and tried looking for something promising in the registry, but no joy so far. I tried iTunes support and even subscribed to their forums, but can't figure out how to post? Anybody have a resource for addressing iTunes questions? -- J. Paul Kent 206-383-0539
Better diff tool that change bars?
I generally do what Steve suggests. I run the compare utility on the old book versus the new book. Then I collect all of the newly created files (file1cmp.fm, file2cmp.fm, etc.) and create a new book with them. I use the existing graphics, TOC, and index files and then PDF the whole mess for the reviewers. Works pretty well, although sometimes there are a lot of phantom changes caused by name changes to linked graphics and the like. I've developed some search techniques that show the change bars, insert, and delete conditions and when my reviewers want a "better" road map of the actual changes, I to that extra scrubbing as well. Recommended version of Acrobat for FM 7.1
I've been getting away with using Acrobat 5.0 with FrameMaker 7.1 (Windows XP Pro) for some time now, but it looks like my luck has finally run out. I installed Acrobat 5.0 and FrameMaker 7.1 on a new computer (Windows XP Media Edition) and all appeared to be working fine until I opened the first PDF distilled on this new machine. It's a 200 page document and the 3rd page does not display properly (something about error 122). I tried distilling the offending page separately and replacing the problem page. I also tried distilling and replacing the offending file (the TOC) . Finally I tried just deleting the offending page. But in every case the file refuses to Save. When I try, I get a progress bar that goes to about 80% before an error message pops up, referring again to error 122. So, assuming that my problem is related to mis-matched versions of Acrobat and FrameMaker, I'm wondering what version of Acrobat to purchase. Assuming the latest version is not the best match for the version of Frame I've got, where can I purchase it? On the other hand if you've seen a less expensive fix to this kind of problem, please point me in the direction. I"d much prefer spending the $$ on Christmas. Thanks for your input. Sincerely, -- J. Windows on a Mac
I have a friend who has a Mac-based DTP biz and occasionally has a need to read a PC file. I see a bit of patter from time to time here indicating that folks are running Windows on Macs so this list occurred to me as a potential resource in helping her out. They are using some kind of software to run Windows XP on one of their Macs and just recently when they get this message when they try to fire up Windows: NTLDR: Fatal Error 2592 reading BOOT.INI I suggested that if I got something like this on a PC that I'd put in a boot disk suspecting a bad boot sector on the hard drive. She said she could try putting in the installattion CD, but I'm guessing that won't do the trick. I asked her for additional information (see below), but perhaps I should have asked for more. Here's what I asked for: ~ What version of the Mac OS are you running? ~ What version of the Windows OS are you running? ~ What is the name of the software solution that you are running that allows you to run the Windows OS on a Mac? Thanks in advance for whatever assistance you can provide or additional questions I might need to answer before I'll be likely to get her on the right track. -- J. Paul Kent 206-383-0539
