Re: [Framers] Can Frame 15 be used so I can eliminate ePublisher?
I'm not, Pat -- Robert was referring to weirdness in the UI, but at this point, I've been using it so long, I've forgotten the blips in changeover -- this happened years ago. The keyboard shortcuts I use weren't affected and are still there, so YMMV Art Campbell art.campb...@gmail.com "... Re: [Framers] Can Frame 15 be used so I can eliminate ePublisher?
The keyboard shortcuts and window arrangement I'd been using for years stopped working in FrameMaker 9. There has been no major change to the UI since then. I had some huge tables in FrameMaker 6 and 7. In that era it was one of the most stable applications I've ever used. The current release is FrameMaker 2015. The version is actually 13. Re: [Framers] Can Frame 15 be used so I can eliminate ePublisher?
A couple respondents to the migration question lamented the loss of the Frame 8 and earlier GUI, for example: That said .. the jump from FM7.2 to FM13 will likely be far more disconcerting than the features of your Help output. I miss the good old days of pre-FM9. The nice clean UI without all of the pods. Oh well. You're lucky to be moving straight to FM13 instead of some of the interim releases .. much better! Let me provide a different take on this. I switched from Frame 8 to 2015 last year. I too found the pods and all relatively annoying. However, I have come to really appreciate that many of the actions that used to use modal dialog boxes now are in non-modal windows. It means I can do a lot of things a lot quicker than I used to. As a structured frame user, I have found that I am using my homemade tools, which were much quicker to use than Frame 8's stuff, much less because Frame 15 makes it easier to manage elements and attributes. So a qualified thumbs up from me for Frame 2015. Re: [Framers] Can Frame 15 be used so I can eliminate ePublisher?
I'm pretty sure you can do all of those things with the default Publish feature. Whether or not it'll do it as well as ePublisher .. only you can decide that. If that's really all you need from ePublisher, it does seem unfortunate to buy it. I'd spend some time with FM13 Publish and see if you can get it to do what you need. Even if you need to do a little scripting, it seems like you'd benefit from trimming the tool chain a bit. Re: [Framers] Can Frame 15 be used so I can eliminate ePublisher?
I'm on 15, and have used both Publish and the latest Webworks with it. Webworks wins pretty much hands down on quality of output, ability to tweak and customize, and support. If you hate RoboHelp, you'll really hate the Publish tool subset... it's like the limited version of Distiller they ship with Frame. Just a taste, with a lot of the important stuff cut out. That said, if all you want to do is those four things you listed, then Publish will probably work for you. What I'm wondering is can I get Frame 15 to do the same work that ePub does and I therefore won't need to upgrade my ePub but instead get rid of it. What I need Frame 15 to be able to do is: 1.Generate CHM files (I know Frame 15 does this) 2.Use conditions (e.g. PDF_Only) so screenshots can be selected to be excluded from the CHM output but included in the PDF output 3.Write my content using one font (e.g. Times) and have a different font (e.g. Arial) used when the CHM file is generated 4.Use a cross-reference format that includes page numbers for the PDF output but removes the page numbers for the CHM output Thank you in advance for your help. [Framers] Can Frame 15 be used so I can eliminate ePublisher?
I'm currently on a Windows 7 machine using Frame 7.2 and ePublisher 2012.4. My Windows 10 machine should arrive any day.
