Re: [Framers] Embedding attachments in FM that remain attachments when PDF'd

2017-08-04 Thread David Artman
In my testing (Reader DC) I found the Previous and Next View to only
toggle between page-view settings (e.g., page width, full page,
continuous). I was about to suggest using them but thought, "Hmmm,
better verify" and--for me at least--it was a big nope. Alt+Left was
the only way to go back to the source PDF when it opened the target,
attached PDF into the same tab.

(I recall a similar usability problem with mobile PDF readers: When we
wanted one document--a checklist--to open to the more-detailed steps,
the opened document had to have an explicit link back in its text to
   return to the checklist.)

I'm still hoping that the hotspot creation will work for the OP!

I forgot to mention that there's a pretty rough usability issue with
hotspot linking to an embedded PDF: Unless you define it so that it
opens in a new tab or Acrobat/Reader window (if a PDF) then the only
way a user can navigate 'back' is with Alt+Left Arrow. I cannot find
any way to add a "Back" and "Forward" button to the toolbar (and end
users likely wouldn't either, if such toolbar buttons are not visible

Oh, and the Alt+Left Arrow only works in Acrobat, not Reader. (Seems

Perhaps you could make your icons where you want them in FM with the
intention of *attaching* the (non-FM, non-PDF) files to the PDF
post-distillation. If you can figure out how a PDF attachment can be
referenced with a relative path--or, perhaps, as an anchor, like one
would do to have a URL call for a specific heading in the PDF?--then
you could have the FM URL 'point' to where the PDF attachments will
eventually 'live' in the final PDF. (Extra points if you can make the
FM icons+links Reference Page elements, for consistent reuse and
   file-size efficiency!)
Sorry I cannot offer exact steps; I offer a map not a guidebook. :^)

I have never used it, but Acrobat has a PDF "portfolio" feature that
lets you package other documents with the PDF. Perhaps it would have

I vaguely remember having done this in the past when I wanted to emulate a web
page in FrameMaker. From memory, using anchored frames I overlaid the icon
graphic with a transparent area of the same size and hyperlinked the remote
file to the transparent area.

If this doesn't make sense, John, I'll dig out some files and try to do a

Subject: [Framers] Embedding attachments in FM that remain attachments when
PDF'd

I need to embed some Excel and Word documents as ICONS into my FM docs that
when PDF'd remain as attachments that can be clicked and will open.

All my experiences with FM11 are when PDF's, the attachment icons turn into
inert graphic icons.

Is there a way?

Re: [Framers] Embedding attachments in FM that remain attachments when PDF'd

2017-08-01 Thread Monique Semp
What about just including an appropriate icon as an image (so the Excel
worksheet symbol, for example), and hyperlinking it to the external file in
the same way one would add a URL?

I haven't tried it out myself, so just a thought. I did a quick google (I'm
not currently using FrameMaker, so didn't want to take the time to
experiment myself), and here's a rather old (2011) discussion about
different possibilities: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/942300.

Re: [Framers] Embedding attachments in FM that remain attachments when PDF'd

2017-08-01 Thread Robert Lauriston
Acrobat supports embedding attachments in PDF:
https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/links-attachments-pdfs.html

The closest FrameMaker counterpart is using File > Import > Object to
embed an entire file as an OLE object, as you're doing.

I'm not sure whether converting embedded OLE objects to PDF
attachments is a feature request or that it's not happening is a bug.

2017-08-01 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi John,

Possibly Shlomo Perets can do this with his TimeSavers.
I doubt, if you can do this with the regular FrameMaker and
Acrobat features.

Best regards

Winfried

Does nobody know how to attach a file, such as an Excel file, as an icon,
that when PDF'd and the icon is clicked, it opens the file?

I'm trying File > Import > Object, then selecting an existing file and
selecting Display as Icon. It creates an active link in the FM file, but
when PDF'd, just displays an inert icon. Using FM11 and Acrobat XI,
