I think it's worthwhile paying a MIF2GO expert for an hour of his or

of paying for another help conversion program.

I asked our company to foot the bill for a few hours of Steve

Please refresh my memory or dispel my ignorance about how and where I may obtain Mif2Go for use with FrameMaker 12 and FrameMaker 2015 Release.  This, to convert into Word files.

As I recall, Mif2Go and its close relatives were to have become open source after Jeremy died.

There is one updated DLL that you need to make Mif2Go compatible with Frame 12.
As for FM 2015, we only tested the 30-day trial and we could not get Mif2Go to
run. We didn't spend any time investigating why. We assumed it was the same
issue as FM 12, that Mif2Go probably needed a small code update to recognize

Re: [Framers] Mif2Go conversion to Word

2016-01-06 Thread Harding, Dan
FM to PDF to Word is a nonstarter if you need to retain index markers or other
cross-references in the resulting Word file.

Doing a direct save from FM to RTF omits any index markers contained in
footnote text.

Thus Mif2go.

open that file in Word and then continue to work on it as an RTF file, or save
it to a Word format. I prefer going from a PDF to Word over going from FM to

But I don't do hard core work in Word, so I'm just wondering if there is

Gary -

When FrameMaker has focus on a file - not when I choose a file in the .book
window - that works for one file at a time. I need to do this for several
books, each of which has numerous constituent (or "child") files. I project
that each book will be many hundreds of pages. I've been through the drill of
having to piece together numerous files to have only one Word file. That is a
_lot_ of work. I expect that to convert from .rtf into some format of Word
(.doc or .docx) will be just that much more. Then, if for any reason, I must
change a source file, then I have to go through the drill again.

It is exactly that type of situation for which the preferred method is to
encode as many features and functions in the FrameMaker files so that they
exist in the output such as .pdf.

I just saved one file as .rtf, and in it, simple cross-references to
subordinate (or "child") headings do not work. Same in .doc, and the layout is
severely fouled, to boot. In .docx, the cross-references do not work, but the
layout does not appear to be damaged.

It occurs to me that I could combine all the constituent files into only one
file and not even use the .book feature of FrameMaker, but I'm sure that that
is not a recommended - let alone a best - practice.

So, those are not possible courses of action for me. Unless, of course, I
might be allowed to provide work product of such quality, which I seriously
doubt.

And, as Dan Harding indicated in his email while I was developing this email,
.fm to .rtf or .doc or .docx is a bad deal.

This sounds like bad practise to me - it has the makings of a version control
nightmare. How, for example, are you going to link the (possibly several)
changed PDFs with their FrameMaker master document?

You do not say which version of FrameMaker you are using, but later versions
have the ability to import PDF review comments:

The note 'Note: The source document should not be changed between generating
PDF and importing comments' is no longer true with FrameMaker 12's enhanced

Subject: RE: [Framers] Mif2Go conversion to Word

I have been following this particular thread with interest.

Does anyone have an opinion on using Acrobat Writer to edit the PDF file
created from FM? The intention being to not revert to the original FM file and
that all future edits would be done using Acrobat writer only.

This process only to be used on a small number of FM files. 'Normal' practice
is to use FM exclusively. I am thinking of doing this as my workload is
increasing and we do not intend to purchase a second FM licence or train a
second user in FM. Instead a second person is available but that person has
Acrobat writer experience.

Thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

Denis

Windows 7 Enterprise Service pack 1
FrameMaker 12.0.4.445
Structured interface with unstructured files

I have the above setup. I believe that I have the latest update to FrameMaker.
I have started the process to get FrameMaker 2015 Release.

I guess I'm missing something in FrameMaker 12 that you have, or I am majorly
visually impaired this morning. In the user interfaces - both structured and
unstructured - I do not find any way to save from .fm to any type of Word
document. I imagine that you might have an addon, plugin, or utility that I
don't have.

I have started to test the save as from PDF file.

There is one updated DLL that you need to make Mif2Go compatible with Frame 12.
As for FM 2015, we only tested the 30-day trial and we could not get Mif2Go

Support for FM12/2015 is, from what I understand, not great. I believe
that some have successfully been able to get it to work. Check the
mif2go Yahoo group for details.

Please refresh my memory or dispel my ignorance about how and where I may

convert into Word files.

As I recall, Mif2Go and its close relatives were to have become open source
after Jeremy died.

Key for making it work in FrameMaker 12 (and probably FrameMaker 2015 too? but
I have not tried that version), is the one file that needs to be changed. It is
