Formatting Cross References

2006-07-13 Thread Doug

I'm replacing my CTOCs with sets of cross-references...in some cases
the heading is long so that the cross reference, even though it uses a
format with a small font size, forces the page number to wrap to the
beginning of the next line. Of course I need the page number to be at
the ned of any given line, whether it wraps or not.

Is there a way I can add a manual line break to the XRef so that
enough of the text wraps to the next line to require the automatic
leader and move the page number to the right margin?

Thanks,

Doug

Formatting cross-references

2006-07-04 Thread Alan Houser
Except for the font family, superscript, and subscript properties,
FrameMaker does not replicate any character formatting from the target
of the cross-reference. This is especially problematic when _part_ of a
target has a character format applied, as in your case.

Any work-arounds for this are non-trivial. For example, I've seen
companies with product names like "FastStart", which occurred frequently in headings. In the text of any
cross-references to these headings, the product name would lose its
distinctive formatting.

Workarounds for this include --
- re-write headings to avoid using the product name
- accept a default formatting for cross-reference text
- define a new font using a program like Fontographer for the italicized
portion of the product name

If I'm missing another obvious solution, I would love to hear about it.

RE: Formatting cross-references

2006-07-03 Thread Bernard Aschwanden
In your xref code you can add references to tags.

For example, in a blank FM file you can:

1. select Special Cross Ref
2. Click Edit Format
3. If required, select Heading Page under Formats

Now review the Definition:

\`$paratext\' on page\ $pagenum

You can change it to this:

\`Emphasis$paratextDefault ΒΆ Font\' on page\ $pagenum

Now the paratext will be in the Emphasis format.

Build on that idea and you should be good to go. Hope that helps,

Bernard

Is there a way to apply a character format to the text of a
cross-reference? I've created a cross-reference to a specific heading
paragraph format, but part of each of these headings has a character
format applied. Of course, the character format doesn't carry over to
the cross-reference.

Is there a step I haven't taken that will remedy this situation?
