RE: Chapter Numbering Problem

2010-12-17 Thread Michael Pearson

Hi John,

Something to check is whether or not the $chapnum variable is actually being
used to number your chapters. There are many different ways to set up this kind
of numbering. Frequently, older templates simply use n+ style building blocks
in the paragraph formats to achieve this kind of numbering. If that's the case
with your template, try setting the numbering for all files in the book to
Continue numbering from previous paragraph in book. Update the book and see
what you get.

I've a large book with 57 chapters. Each time I update the book, it's a crap
shoot whether the chap. count will come to 57. Sometimes two chaps share the
same number, sometimes there are other pairs of same-numbered chapters.
Seldom does the error occur in the same place/s between updates. I've
applied Continue Numbering From Previous File in Book from the book file
to the pertinent range of chapters many, many times, and saved and resaved
the book file. But still the random numbering misfires recur. Any ideas?
 Thanks,

Re: Chapter Numbering Problem

2010-12-17 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi John,

What does your numbering set up look like? Do you have more numbering
sequences in your files?

I've seen similar behavior when auto numbered text is in anchored text
frames, in those cases numbering sequence is not linked anymore.

Also, be sure there are no manual numbering adaptions (can occur when
someone tries to correct a numbering problem by setting the number manually,
but forgets about it when chapters are reordered)

FrameMaker never randomly changes numbering. There's always an error in file
set up if these things occur.

Hi All,

I'm back for more great advice...

I am having a problem getting my chapter numbering right in the table of
contents of one of my manuals. Right now, it thinks Chapter 1 is Chapter 9,
Chapter 2 is Chapter 10 and so on. I have made sure that each chapter is
numbered correctly under FormatDocumentNumbering, and the chapter numbers
are correct in other places to which they are referred (page numbering that
includes the chapnum, etc.) I am at a loss for other places where this
information might be stored in the document. Any suggestions are welcome!

Hi, Molly:

In the Table of Contents specification on the TOC reference
page, use the $paranum or $paranumonly building block
instead of $chapnum, to retrieve either the whole
autonumbered chapter paragraph, or just its number, for TOC
entries.

$chapnum retrieves the chapter number of the file in which
it appears, so in the table of contents file, it retrieves the
table of contents file's chapter number.

 to be working this time.

I assume you've opened the chapter files in question and confirmed
they're OK and all the pages are there.

1) In the book window, select all the files after the first chapter
(i.e., chapters 2 through whatever, plus appendices, index, and anything
else that has continued page numbered).

2) Right-click the selection and click Numbering.

3) In the Numbering Properties dialog, click the Page tab.

4) On the Page tab, select Continue Numbering from Previous Page in
Book, and click Set.

5) In the book window, click the Update/Generate button and update the
book and all generated lists.

Translation.

The translation must be done in Word, so I will need to convert from Frame to
Word, and this caused huge linking problems between the Word files the last
time I did it with multiple Frame files in the Frame book.

Having one Frame content file, though it is not ideal for me, saves me from
huge headaches down the road in this context.

RE: Chapter Numbering

2006-12-12 Thread Lester C. Smalley
You simply can not use the $chapnum variable for this - it can only have
a single value in any one file.

So you have to redesign your numbering scheme to use standard counter
building block, such as n and n+.

Depending on how other items number, for example, are heading in the
chapter numbered like 1.1 where the first digit (left of the decimal
point) is the chapter number and the next is the actual heading number,
or tables/figures designated with compound numbers like Figure 2.3
(again, where the left digit is the chapter number, you may have to
modify many paragraph tags' numbering properties.

For a lot more info about compound numbering sequences in FrameMaker,
take a look at my numbering whitepaper at
