Re: [Framers] [FrameMaker 2019] Customizing responsive HTML5 output: best practices and good documentation?
Hi Yves, I also started to convert my unstructured documentation to HTML5. And I do not have any tutorials or best practices. I am still experimenting. I will look for more information in the online help and in the various forums and blogs. My first impressions and questions: o Default settings are good. o I do not know which font will be used. Probably my font will be replaced by something else. However, I do not know, which fonts are on Android or iOS. Is there are default replacement? o Graphics conversion with SVG is best. However, if you have some other objects in the same anchored frame, then you should convert to raster images. I find the results much better than I expected. o When you have tables with table titles with several paragraphs, then you have to use a work-around. HTML allows only a single paragraph. See here: https://forums.adobe.com/message/10987920#10987920 o I do not know how I can define which text goes into a topic title. E.g. when my paragraph to start a new topic has a table anchor, then the whole anchor paragraph and the whole table text will be in the topic title. o Most of our products have order codes like 123.4567. When I want to search for such order codes, the . is interpreted as separator between two words. As if I want to search for 123 and 4567. I do not know a solution. o Of course I had written documents with a certain layout. I have to find solutions for some of my paragraph layouts (e.g. right-aligned tab stops). o I adapt a copy of the regular settings file on our network. I do not know, if there is a standard solution, where this settings file should reside. I have been doing responsive HTML 5 output. Regarding the settings file, sometimes it suddenly becomes corrupted, so make a copy of the file you are using Caroline Tabach On Mon, 29 Apr 2019, 13:00 Reng Winfried, wrote: > Hi Yves, > > I also started to convert my unstructured documentation to HTML5. > And I do not have any tutorials or best practices. Second Lin's wording, but I would use "compliant" instead of "enabled" because "enabled" in this context is over the line into jargon. Art Campbell art.campb...@gmail.com "... However, the software team is quite small so I'm wondering if there is a way I could legally leverage Frame when working with that team. Using Frame's conditional text option to create at least 3 different software manuals around a large core of shared text would be a godsend. I know you can legally install Frame on 2 machines so long as only one machine is in use at a time. Has anyone ever tried this in order to share Frame with another writer? Or can you legally install a single seat copy of Frame on a server and have it work properly (with one user at a time)? If none of these options will work, maybe I'll have to see if I can make a business case for 2 single seats to use with the software team. Re: [Framers] Grammar Question
You're remembering it wrong. If it were all in front of the word devices, you'd need the hyphen. If you're still not comfortable, you could try: This cable connects to devices that are compliant with the RS-485 standard. It's a bit longer, but it's crystal clear. :) On Mon, Apr 29, 2019 at 1:36 PM Doug wrote: > I can accept compliant, but since complaint modifies RS-485 (doesn't it?) > then a hyphen is required linking the two. Re: [Framers] Grammar Question
There's nothing wrong with "RS-485-compliant." The first hyphen is part of the noun "RS-485," the second forms a phrasal adjective. This isn't really grammar, it's an arbitrary punctuation rule that varies from one style guide to another. Some might use en dashes instead of hyphens. Are you sure you want "connects to" rather than simply "connects"? Re: [Framers] Grammar Question
Actually, all of you are wrong. This cable can likely connect to a lot of things, including RS-485 devices if it has the usual RJ-45 Ethernet plug on the business end. If so, it can easily be connected to other devices, such as standard Ethernet switches and routers, but it would not function properly. Even if it has another type of connector, it's probably better to just describe what to do with it. Assuming you're writing this sentence as a step in a series of instructions, just say this: "Cable X should be connected to the RS-485 port on Device Y." If you just want to describe the nature of the cable, then try this: "This is an RS-485 signal cable." In either example above, it's clear that the cable and the signal on it complies with the RS-485 standard at least well enough to function properly. Dennis ...
