If you're attached to a college you can get a discount from Kodak, although
it's only about 10%.

Subject: [Frameworks] Where to buy 100D cheap in bulk?

Hi frameworks,

This year I've shot a hell of a lot of super 8 films and it's cost me a small
fortune. I usually spend around £12 a cartridge and I did the math on how many
films I've shot this year and it kind of blew me away how much I've spent. I
was wondering if there was anyplace I can order the cartridges in bulk to save
some dollar in the long run next year? I would consider buying from any country
as long as it saves me some cash.

Thanks
Kevin

In the US, student discount is actually 30%. Before I left for Berlin this
summer, I grabbed 20 rolls of 100D with the educational discount at Kodak in
New York for about $10/roll, so that'd be a lo cheaper than your 12 pounds
each, probably even with shipping from the States.

[Frameworks] Someone might have interest

2011-12-09 Thread David Folmar

I am a lurker who enjoys the endless discussions on film versus video, anyhow I
am also on Media Librarian discussion list and I know some of you have contact
or ties to film archives so I thought I would copy this post over for anyone
who has interest, I am pretty sure the librarian wants to give their 16mm films
to someone who will preserve them, so all of you found footage artist should
probably not bother the poor person but you never know, they will probably be
destroyed if they are not taken, so it is worth a shot...

I have to do some very extreme weeding of our remaining 16mm films. (Losing
their storage space. Space for VHS DVDs is not effected, fortunately.)

Do you have archives or other places you’d suggest I contact, who might want to
give some reels a new home?

(I’ve sent films to the Chicago Film Archive, Harvard’s, and have a list to go
to David in Rhode Island.)

[Frameworks] Super-8 film to HD video transfers

2011-12-09 Thread Brian Frye
Dear Frameworkers,

Does anyone have any recommendations about labs that can do a high-quality
super-8 film to HD video transfer at a reasonable price, preferably in the
Los Angeles area?

Comments on typical/good rates would be much appreciated. The volume of
material is unclear, but estimated at 25 hours.

Thanks!

Hi Brian,
I have no idea on rates, but the only L.A. area provider I'd recommend is
Cinelicious. Really beautiful scans from Super-8.

[Frameworks] Hi-8 equipment

2011-12-09 Thread Sandra Maliga
I have a sony Hi-8 camcorder I bought at a sale at the public access
studios in Minneapolis but it is no longer working. I'd like to
transfer many hours of Hi-8 and 8mm video to digital via my mini DV
deck. Anyone in LA have Hi-8 video gear lying around for loan, rental
or sale?

  Thanks,

My understanding is that Digital 8 gear will also play back Hi-8

You can also use a Digital-8 (D8) camera to do this. It will should play
 back Hi 8 tapes and send them through firewire in the same format as DV;
i.e. DV NTSC 720x480 29.97fps 48KHz sound. Probably easier than running
 a Hi8 cam through a DV cam.

Make sure you set the sound to 48 khz, i think 32khz is the other option
which can cause hiccups in video timelines.

Ugghh 32 khz, also known as 12 bit. Because the cam manufacturers
wanted you to be able to over dub in the camera. Nothing but headaches
and out of sync woes.

16bit, 48Khz for sound in DV cameras.

2011-12-09 Thread Curtis Miller
There's Pro8mm in Burbank. I've worked with them before. Their HD transfer
looks great, although there might be a cheaper option (I think HD transfers
are $500 per hour of footage with a 15 minute limit).
I hope that helps,

Curtis
