[Frameworks] homemade video copies of 16mm

2012-06-22 Thread k. a.r.

I've been using a Sony A1U
shooting in 1080i.

I have a transfer box that is pretty good, (it's just a mirror and a lens
basically)

The thing that sucks is that I can't get it to be strobe free without using the
video camera at the '15' shutter speed.
This looks weird when there is a lot of action in the 16mm film.

I am using a basic bell and howell blue school projector.

Any ideas on how to record a better image with this gear?
thanks in advance.

You need a 5 blade projector if you're shooting 29.97.

You can use a standard projector if your camera will shoot 24fps.

Sell the Sony, and buy a used Canon XG-A1.

I agree. I have a Canon XH-A1 and shooting right off of the screen in 24F
mode produces pretty decent results. In the following example I was playing
the film on an ordinary Kodak Pageant.

[Frameworks] Cheap Transfer In NYC

2012-06-22 Thread alex . mccarron
So, I have a 100' roll of Tri-X 16mm that I want an HD transfer of. It's mostly

Anyone know of lab that's not gonna give me any jive about roll minimums that I

I thought about that and was following the other discussion about this. I'd
really like something that will look good when the stills are uploaded to a
website later.

So I guess I'm looking for the cheapest professional looking transfer in
NYC or a time consuming and cheap way of achieving that quality that is
maybe something like finding the stills and motion parts I want with a
steenbeck and hand scanning the 3600 individual frames myself?

Anything but a garage transfer is what I'm saying.

Technicolor is saying $0.48/ft with a student discount. Anyone think I can
beat that?

[Frameworks] Robert Nelson film query

2012-06-22 Thread Andy Ditzler
Hi Frameworkers,

I'm planning a Robert Nelson tribute for August and am wondering about two
films listed at Film-Makers' Coop. Both are by Stephen Gebhardt. One is
titled Cincinnatti Answer Print and the other is titled Legendary Epics,
Yarns and Fables Part 1: Robert Nelson. Both are dated 1969, both are
listed as running 11 minutes, both are described as films with Nelson
speaking. I'm wondering if these are the same movie or variations on the
same material. Does anyone know? Additionally, has anyone on the list seen
either of these?

Of course, I could rent them, and may do so, but am also interested if
anyone has thoughts on them here.

Thanks,

Re: [Frameworks] Cheap Transfer In NYC

2012-06-22 Thread David Tetzlaff
If you really want HD for sketches and tests, then borrow an XH-A1 (or similar)
and project the film onto a piece of matte board (more smooth and even than a
wall) getting the camera as close to the projector as possible to minimize
parallax. The results can be surprisingly good. Probably best to use manual
iris bracket exposures, and do a few takes.

If you want high quality stills, try to borrow an analytic projector, or some
other model with a pause function that will project a still frame without
burning up the film. Then shoot that with a DSLR. There's more detail in 16mm
than any HD transfer can capture.

Unless it's footage you know you want to use for a serious project / finished
product paying for a good frame-by-frams scan isn't cost effective.

Re: [Frameworks] Looking to buy ALL 16mm film

2012-06-22 Thread Scott Dorsey

There used to be a good market for short ends you could call up Rafik
or Film Emporium and say What 16mm can you give me for four cents a foot
today? and get something useful.

With the demise of 16mm theatrical production, there are very few 16mm
short ends available now, and what is available is nearly as expensive
as new stock (usually more expensive than the Kodak student price).

Interestingly enough, because there's still a lot of 35mm production going
on and because the demand for 35mm short ends is smaller, you can often
get 35mm short ends for substantially less than 16mm. I've been shooting
an increasing amount of stuff with a 35mm Eyemo just because the stock is
cheaper now.

You can still call Film Emporium today or look on their website and see
what they have for sale, but you won't find a lot of people today with a
bunch of short ends sitting around in the fridge anymore.. and the folks
who do have them know that they can sell them to Film Emporium for good
money, sadly.
