[Frameworks] 8mm movies in LA - rent, borrow, steal

2012-07-02 Thread Huckleberry Lain
Hey all,
I am putting on a little event in LA for the next downtown artwalk with
this cool little collectors/antiques shop on Main st.
I am looking for some R8 or S8 movies - the kinds that were sold by the
major studios and were usually either sections of feature films or short
cartoons and what not. I don't have a budget, but I'm willing to spend a
little to get them (but not enough to buy). Does anyone know where I can
get some? Unfortunately, the Echo Park Film Center is closed for July and
I can't rent from them.

Much appreciated for the help.

Woodpecker, family movies, etc...

Try asking on 16mmfilmtalk.com. There are a _lot_ of those Castle

take a look on Ebay. The things do not sell for much. Put some

Although I haven't seen it yet- I've heard great things about Gerard
Richter Painting as a look inside the artist's work.
http://www.gerhardrichterpainting.com/

Mostly just playing now at smaller art-houses, but you can find out where
on the website

And, although it's fiction - Basquiat (1996) is really engaging and may be
helpful.

I've made a few short pieces about artists as well, and I think the
important thing for me has been to find what motivates the artist in
his/her work and then use that as motivation for the film itself. (Like if
an artist is greatly inspired by nature - including that raw inspiration
material into the film can give the audience a sense of seeing as the
artist)

Just some thoughts - good luck! I'd love to hear how it goes!

Chuck Kleinhans

Since you indicated that you are still learning your craft and this is to be a
short project, let me suggest this, in contradistinction to the fine (but
feature length for the most part) films other s have suggested.

It is almost always interesting to show the manual process of artistic
creation. This also gives you a logical narrative spine for the film:
beginning to end, inspiration to completion, etc. You can thus show the
activity of art making and use a voice over from one or more separate
interviews to inform in a verbal way. If the artist makes similar work you may
be able to shoot at several different times which lets you cover something that
may not have gone well in an earlier shoot. Especially for new filmmakers,
it's a lot better to do a project about a repeated event (city symphony, etc.)
that lets you go back for B roll, etc. than a unique event (the one
championship game).

Since we are trotting out our favorite films on art and artists - and I
generally like these thematic collections that emerge here now and again -
I'll join the chorus with some of my picks:

Paradjanov's Arabesques on a Theme of Pirosmani:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tx0MTvRGCnY

James Ivory's The Sword and the Flute
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hs5VugWiLzM
and his Venice: Theme and Variations

Straub-Huillet's Cezanne and A Visit to the Louvre

All-time favorite (if slightly off-topic):
Harun Farocki: Still Life

(fascinating, but largely off-topic)
Charles Ray Eames: The Black Ships

Alain Resnais: Paul Gauguin
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xqyh4_alain-resnais-paul-gauguin-dvdrip-b_shortfilms
and Resnais-Marker: Statues Also Die:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5Pb9nykjQA

some of these are about artists, some about artworks - all share the
approach of keeping the camera fixed firmly on the art and examining it in
detail. a bit like Andrei Rublev without the black-and-white part.

Re: [Frameworks] Interesting (?) Question

2012-07-02 Thread David Tetzlaff
In 1980, an upright Moviola would have been all but worthless. Lord, those
things were awful compared to a flatbed. A 6 plate Moviola flatbed in good
condition might have been worth, I dunno, maybe $1000.

On the other hand, used splicers and rewinds weren't that expensive in 1980 and
haven't lost that much of their value.

With that equipment list, the premise just doesn't work very well. The heyday
of value for 16mm post stuff probably starts to poop out circa 1975, so it
wasn't that expensive by 1980, and some of it is still used by people who deal
with prints.

By 2005, the character would have to be pretty dense or disconected to expect
old 16mm equipment to have more value than it would have. People who work in
16mm in an 'art' or 'idie' context mostly had a good handle on the market, and
were keen on picking up gear that corporate/industrial/education institutions
were discarding in the move to video.

I think your novelist may be off-track in having a 16mm maker concerned about
the monetary value of gear. !6mm making isn't that much about the money, and to
the extent it is, the money is in the film stock. The 'digital transition' as
Frameworks so thoroughly documented, was more one of a felt loss of utility
and/or soul, the tools are merely metonomy for an aesthetic, a method of
working, a way of life.

And the one piece of gear that embodies that is a Steenbeck (generally
preferred over Moviola flatbeds by most makers AFAIK). In 1980 obtaining your
own Steenebeck would have required resources of money or luck or
resourcefulness. It's something you would have wanted very badly, been so happy
to have obtained. A big thing taking up precious floor-space but treasured,
cared for, and used intimately for hour after hour after hour.

And then, at some point, (kinda 2005-ish) it becomes obsolete thanks to Final
Cut Pro and Cinema Tools and Digital intermediates and what not, and the
Steenebck starts gathering dust, and stuff piles up on top of it, and then you
eventually you can't justify it taking up the floor-space anymore. And since
you were a film die-hard, by this time it's not just that you can't sell the
Steenbeck. You can't even give it away. And it winds up on the curb waiting for
somebody to haul it off as scrap metal. And it's your old friend. No, it's 25
years of your life. So part of yourself is out on the curb. And that doesn't
really have anything to do with market value.

 Hi,

I received the inquiry below from a novelist and wonder if the collective
brain trust that is Frameworks might help me provide an answer. Anyone have
an idea? If so, I'll pass along your answers/guesses to her. Thanks a lot!

Do you have any idea what a new or used Moviola might have cost in 1980 or
so? It's more likely that my character would have bought a second-hand
Moviola, maybe one that had been used in the the 1970's.

My character is going to resell the Moviola, along with a lot of other
nondigital 16 mm equipment (like splicers, a synchronizer, rewinds) in
2005--and get a lot less money for the stuff than he paid for it. So I
  have
to start with some reasonably accurate original price.
