Just for grins and to amplify David's point, it's time to remember Paper
Tiger TV's delicious "Herb Schiller Reads the New York Times" from 1981.

needs to be concerned about but programmers and other gatekeepers who are
afraid of the rights holders (however misplaced that fear may be.)

No programmer in this field is going to say 'boo' to James Benning. For less

Er, no. It's a principle of law, not a matter for rights holders to decide
themselves.

Also when you know the other creator, the concept of fair use gets trickier,
doesn't it?

If someone you know demands a cash payment for something out of which you're
unlikely to get even a penny in return, you need a better set of friends.

[Frameworks] my new(ish) 16mm films on vimeo

2014-02-22 Thread John Woods
I recently publicly posted two short films of mine on Vimeo that did the
festival racket last year.

7246 120' WE:

https://vimeo.com/31825344

Shot on 10-15 year old Kodak and Agfa 16mm.

Legacies:
https://vimeo.com/33009329

All hand processed and optically printed on 7363 and 7302. Started as a
workshop project and not finished for several years. I think I re-printed it
completely at least 3 times as I went along the learning curve.

[Frameworks] Looking/Talking: a Live Cinema Improvisation with Stephanie Barber at Microscope, MON 2/24, 7pm

2014-02-22 Thread LBurchill
Mon Feb 24, doors 7pm, admission $6, artist in person.

Microscope Gallery us very happy to welcome artist and writer Stephanie
Barber, in town from Baltimore, for a night of live, improvisational
"cinema performance". The event marks the first New York performance of the
artist's ongoing project "Looking/Talking". In this work, Barber armed with
her video camera records a live feed of herself looking through photographs
and other images and responding to the spontaneous memories through stories
and poetics, inquiry and silence, sorrow and jokes. The work is related to
the artist's current project with Bonnie Jones called "New Collaboration in
Translation and Aliveness" as well as readings she has given for her book
"Night Moves", all of which are spoken improvisations.

"Some years ago I was inspired by David Antin's talk poems and have wanted
to push myself to this scary space of unpremeditated improvisation. I am
using the photographs and my lifelong obsession with photographs (both as
an art object and a memorial alembic) as a diving off point for my words
and silences." -SB

Re: [Frameworks] 16mm telecine?

2014-02-22 Thread Jeff Kreines
I haven’t commented because it seemed like you wanted a place in LA. Telecine
(transfers to “video”) is limiting — scanning to data files is the best way to
go.

But if that’s not the case, Kinetta Archival in NYC does 3.3K scans (5x the res
of HD) from all formats, 8 to 35mm. While our specialty is archival work —
damaged film, shrunken film, and contrasty film — prints and reversal original
— we also do new film that has no problems.

We are not the cheapest, but we do high-quality work, and are artist-friendly.
3.3K scans from 16mm, graded and output as ProRes (your choice 2K, or HD pillar
boxed, or for S16, HD) are $.68/foot, with you supplying a hard drive for the
files. $210 minimum.

Re: [Frameworks] Film editing bench (table)

2014-02-22 Thread Scott Dorsey
You will not find any tabletop 35mm viewers. They exist, but there were not
many made and they were mostly used at theatre make-up tables. It is far
easier and cheaper to find a flatbed or an upright editing machine.

What you WILL find cheaply are cineangiography viewers, which are sort of
like small 2-plate flatbeds. The ones made by Vanguard Instrument are
my favorite; they have a pull-down claw arrangement like a 16mm projector
rather than a prism, but they are very sharp-looking and light on film.
Will take about 500 feet of film at a time, so you can't work on a full reel,
and limited speed control compared with a real flatbed.

tekyard.com often comes up with the Vanguards and other cineangiography
viewers, as well as with camera systems intended for cineangiography
(usually 35mm Mauers with funny controls and no finders).

[Frameworks] Critical update in Federal case against Lawrence Brose

2014-02-22 Thread defensefund
Dear Friends and Supporters of Lawrence Brose,

Very soon the United States Attorney’s office will announce that Lawrence
has agreed to accept and plead guilty to a reduced charge. In exchange it
has offered to move to dismiss the original Indictment against Lawrence.
This letter is to alert you to this development so you will have some of
the facts and context to help understand it.

First, and perhaps most importantly, Lawrence has not, and does not admit
that he ever knowingly downloaded or possessed images of child
pornography. The government’s plea offer, which Lawrence has agreed to
accept, is to a lesser charge. Like all pleas this is a compromise by the
two parties, nothing more and nothing less. Lawrence has fought hard, but
has decided to move on with his life and his work. The government’s offer
allows Lawrence to come out from under the cloud of accusation. His
artwork does not contain images of sexually exploited children. It never
did. Most importantly, this plea allows Lawrence to move on with his life.

In the coming weeks Lawrence will be reaching out to you for letters of
support to be submitted to the court by his attorneys, who will present
them in their sentencing memorandum. Your letters will go a long way in
supporting him by speaking to his character, his importance as an artist,
his contributions to the community and the art world.

The case is not over yet, and your continued support and understanding are
still needed. On behalf of Lawrence and the Defense Fund thank you for all
that you have done up to now—it has been invaluable to our friend and he
is grateful for your support and kindness.

Yours truly,

This certainly is a good turn of events in Lawrence’s case and is the
result of strategic negotiations on the part of Lawrence’s legal team.
While the critical changes for Lawrence are to take place at the
sentencing stage which is at least 6 months away, for the first time we
can see where this case is headed.

We still need to remind everyone that freedom from this prosecution has
cost Lawrence dearly, financially and otherwise, and we need to continue
to raise significant funds for Lawrence’s mounting debt. To make tax
deductible donations toward Lawrence’s defense please log on to
http://ncrj.org/lawrence-brose/ and donate to the Artist Defense Fund for
Lawrence Brose.

We want to encourage everyone to visit Lawrence’s defense fund website to
catch up on what is new, view the artwork that has been donated for sale
and read the compelling letters of support from notable people who have
voiced their outrage and concern for what is happening to Lawrence.

In LA, Spectra does 16mm (as well as S8 and R8) transfers to 2K. I haven't used them in a few years, but I was happy with what I got in 2011, which was an HD transfer. Also, I'm not sure about their Santa Monica office, but I've used Optimus in Chicago for 16mm and sent my students there. They do great work, and if you can make a friend, you can often get discount rates if you're willing to wait until they have a slow time.I started to do a quick search on this, and here's the Home Movie Day listing of transfer houses: http://www.homemovieday.com/transferhouses.html-Jason Halprin On Saturday, February 22, 2014 8:55 AM, Roger Wilson wrote:I too recommend Frame Discreet! Re: [Frameworks] 16mm telecine?

2014-02-22 Thread Roger Wilson
I too recommend Frame Discreet! They are the best for artist projects and very
affordable!

Without failure you can never achieve success. I have based my process and my
career as an experimental film artist on this statement; and I welcome it as it
pushes me forward as an artist to try something different, something new.

Frame Discreet in Toronto does excellent work with 2K frame-accurate scans.
They are very artist-friendly cinematographers that do high-quality transfers
and have lots of examples on their site: http://framediscreet.com/home/

Best of luck!

Still, if you get an old-style video transfer you're stuck with interlace

artifacts and pulldown artifacts that you won't have from a digital scan.

The problem is that very few of the digital scanning systems will work

properly scanning a print or reversal original. The Kinetta does lovely

work from a reversal original but few other machines will.

[Frameworks] Eiki voltage switch?

2014-02-22 Thread nicky.hamlyn
I have just purchased an Eiki NT-1 16mm projector from eBay (ex UK Ministry
of defence!) and discovered when it arrived that it's a 115 volt version,
whereas the voltage here is 240. Blew a few 13 amp fuses before this dawned
on me. The seller thinks there might be a tapping for 240 volts but I can't
see one. Does anyone have any suggestions about this or about suitable
transformers?

Thanks,

Nicky.
