Re: [Frameworks] Rephotographing 16mm

2016-07-12 Thread Christine Lucy Latimer
Hey Morgan,

Optically printing is a possibility - you would have to run some tests
(using various exposures and filter combinations) in order to determine
what will work best in preventing overall detail loss in the image.
Depending on where you are and your access to a lab, you could also just
get a lab to strike an interneg from your dark original and have them push
the neg by a stop (or whatever you feel you need?) This may be a faster,
less laborious process than running your own tests/optically printing. All
this said, either way, you'll definitely risk losing image detail by
striking off of a dark original, which can be an interesting aesthetic, if
you're okay with it.

Subject: Re: [Frameworks] Super 8 to 35mm Optical Blowup

 Hi Chris,

I'm glad you asked, as it's a subject I feel fairly passionately about.

I'll first just clarify that the super 8 to 35mm blowup I'm seeking is
purely for a project of my own which has to do with the large stretch
between the two formats (i.e. it's a film which has specifically to do with
the extra large blowup). As soon as I have the details hammered out on
that, I'd be happy to say more about it...

As for blowups in general, though - since it's no longer possible to do
run-of-the-mill contact printing in 8mm or super 8, and since there's
 already a decades-long tradition of blowups of 8 to 16, I think it's a less
problematic way to make smaller gauges viewable on film, when duplication
is necessary. It's still a translation, though. Some filmmakers shot
super 8 with the express intention of blowing up (as with some of
Brakhage's films, James Otis's films, and many others), some shot and
printed super 8 with only that intention, no blowup in mind, but then
decided later on to blow up to 16 for whatever reasons (usually a matter of
making the work more accessible, preserving it, etc.)

Blowing up 16mm to 35mm on the other hand has nearly always seemed a
really problematic step to me (unless of course the artist has that
specifically in mind). From a preservation standpoint, it can cost twice
or even 3-4 times as much as doing the work in 16mm, it's inherently
changing the nature of the film in terms of scale, grain structure, etc.,
and it makes, I think, a somewhat elitist political statement that only
venues capable of showing 35mm will now have access to that film. I've
been saying (here and there, to whomever would let me blather about it) for
a dozen years that, on top of these aesthetic/political concerns, the
preservation question of 35mm being somehow more archival or likely to
have increased longevity over 16mm was almost certainly going to be totally
false. In terms of archival stability, the stocks in 16 and 35 are the
same in these purposes, and would have the same chemical longevity, more or
less. And preserving in a gauge not the film's own changes its essential
nature, so that very aspect of its identity (its gauge) is lost in the
preservation. Plus I've never followed the logic that primarily commercial
archiving entities make, that bigger/sharper/faster/etc. is better, because
it's clearly bullshit. What's better is preserving a film as unfussily in
its original format as is possible. And as for 35 outlasting 16, we've
seen where that's gone - only a handful of devoted cinephiliac venues and
museums can handle 35mm now, and a lot of those handle 16mm too. PLUS, any
number of classrooms, galleries, microcinemas, backyards, whatever, can and
do show 16mm on any number of projectors kicking around out there. The
35mm projection knowledge base (especially regarding maintenance) is
supremely limited, whereas a ton more folks have figured out how to run and
even maintain, to some degree, the 16mm projectors they have.

Anyway, I'm ranting. But bottom line, my feeling is to preserve 16mm as
16mm as long as it's possible!

This is not really news: Fuji had announced the discontinuation of its
cine film stocks last fall. The link you that is being cited here,
 http://www.fujifilm.com/news/n130402.html, is just the confirmation
update that the announcement has come true.

At this point, Velvia is not affected because its not a cine film stock
but a photo camera film. (Regardless the fact that 3rd party manufacturers
cut it for Super 8.) It is not sure though whether Velvia is still being
manufactured or whether Fuji just sells old stock.

Jorge was 28. He had been working as a baker in Portugal in the tiny town
of Lavre, and he loved film, especially experimental film. He had an
incredible collection of artist moving image works, and was always keen to

Using only the internet, he managed to educate many people around the world

Re: [Frameworks] FrameWorks Digest, Vol 25, Issue 10

2012-06-10 Thread Christine Lucy Latimer
Meg,

You can buy double 8 rolls of Kodak plus-x and Kodak ektachrome from LIFT
here in Toronto: http://lift.ca/equipment/store

I'm pretty sure that you can rent the film splitter from their equipment
depot as well. I know for certain that Sebastjan at Niagara Custom Labs
will process regular 8 and split it for you as well
http://www.niagaracustomlab.com/ (also here in Toronto...we've got great
resources!)

As far as finding a dual projector (that will project both regular 8 and
super 8), try pawn shops and antique markets in your area. I found my Ansco
dual projector for $30 at a pawn shop. Most of the duals are tension/
direct-driven (not sprocket-driven), as the sprocket size of super 8mm and
regular 8mm is different (regular 8mm sprockets are the same size as 16mm).

A fun experiment to try is to shoot a roll of double 8mm in your double 8
camera (running it through twice, using both sides of the reel), process
it, but refrain from splitting it. If you project it in a 16mm projector,
you'll see an image occupied by four smaller film frames, two right side
up, and two upside down :)

 Hi Margaret,
You can order regular 8 film (Kodak stock) from John Schwind:
 http://www.zerelda.com/internationalfilm/internationalfilm.html
Freestyle also imports Foma regular 8 film:
 http://www.freestylephoto.biz/411801-Foma-Fomapan-R100-BandW-Reversal-Film-2x8mm-Double-8-standard-10?cat_id=407

Any lab that does 16mm reversal can process for you, just ask them if they
have a slitter to cut the film down to 8mm. Yale and Spectra in Los Angeles
will both process and slit the film for you. You can also buy a slitter
online for not very much money, or build one (there are instructions online
just search around and you'll find it).

You will need either a regular 8 projector or a dual 8 projector... a
normal Super 8 projector will not be able to project the film...

 Rick

[Frameworks] Please take a moment to say thank-you

2012-03-29 Thread Christine Lucy Latimer
Hello all,

Technicolor Toronto's film processing lab officially closed its doors today
(on the heels of similar Technicolor lab closures in Vancouver and
Hollywood in the past two years).

Their dedicated processing and engineering staff, (most of whom were
originally employed by Medallion PFA, acquired by Technicolor in 2003) had
life-long careers in motion picture film processing. The knowledge and
experience shared by these individuals is truly staggering, as are the
millions upon millions of feet of film that they processed over the years.

Medallion PFA (later Technicolor) meant a great deal to both commercial and
experimental filmmakers in Toronto and beyond. If you have a spare moment
today, take a breath and thank the wonderful people who make our
film-making and film-going experiences a reality for so many years. Wish
them luck for their future, in whatever vocation they may choose to pursue.

As someone who screened in the most recent Basement Media Festival, I
fully endorse it and encourage everyone to continue submitting. I screened
work in 28 film festivals all over world in 2011, from tiny grassroots
events to well-established, well-funded festivals. Having run the gamut of
good and bad festival experiences, I mush say that the Basement Media
Festival is definitely among the good! LJ and Nick were always
communicative, accommodating and kind to their filmmakers (they even
extended the offer of a couch to crash on when I told them I was likely too
broke to travel to the festival!)

Not only that, but they wound up securing us more than one screening
opportunity! The Basement Media Festival was supposed to just be in
Boston, but due to their go-getter attitude, they also got the program
screened in Brooklyn, NY. Their comportment as festival programmers rivaled
many of the other larger-scale festivals I participated in. They're good,
 hard-working guys.

I don't really understand what the big regret is, Mike - the festival
was free to submit to. Was that the only copy of your film or
something? If so, I can see about sending it back to you if you could
send me some money to cover postage.

Well, I suppose I have a two-part answer for you:
First-off, I apologize. The festival is basically completely organized
by just two people with full-time jobs and we haven't in the past been
able to respond to everyone who submitted. We're working on changing
that this year, and will be sending out an email to everyone who's
submission we receive, regardless of whether they get in to the
   festival.
As for the tape, we aren't able to return submission materials to
filmmakers who send them in. We have absolutely no budget for the
festival, as the festival is free to submit to, and any fees for
screenings have gone entirely to cover the cost of the screening
venue. Due to this, we simply cannot afford the postage (not to
mention the time involved) to send submission materials back to
filmmakers. I'll make a note of this on our entry form going forward.
Additionally, we're only accepting submissionms on NTSC DVDs this
   year.
This festival was started three years ago by a couple of guys who had
no experience running a festival. This whole thing is a big learning
experience for us, and I hope you'll bear with us.
Again, thanks for submitting and I'm sorry if you feel slighted in any
   way

Hey there, folks. The BASEMENT media festival is officially issuing
 to
you, the fine people of FrameWorks, this call for submissions.
The BASEMENT media fest is a low-fidelity film and video festival,
that focuses on shorts of a non-narrative nature. We accept
submissions of all formats, from hi-8 to 16mm to DV, as long as the
work focuses on the mediated aspect of motion picture recording.
In a world filled with 2K Cameras and IMAX, we celebrate the low-res
   and the low-tech.
For more information on BASEMENT, including our past programs, visit
   our website: http://basementmediafest.com.
And here's a link to our submission form, just in case you're
interested in that sort of thing:
   http://basementmediafest.com/2012entryform.pdf
It's free to submit, and the DEADLINE is JULY 29th. Screening will
occur in late 2012 - more info to come.
   Thanks folks,

Re: [Frameworks] books about Film and Perception

2012-02-21 Thread Christine Lucy Latimer

Take a look at Jonathan Crary's writing. He has a few books that refer to
perception and early cinema (although his analysis is situated in a larger
visual arts/ cultural context). I recommend *Techniques of the Observer *for
 what you're after*.*

Subject: [Frameworks] books about Film and Perception
 Hi.
Can you suggest me some books
about connection between film and Visual Perception?
Something like Arnheim's Art and Visual Perception focalized on Film.
 For example
Id' like to investigate the behavoir of human brain during the black
 intervals between frames
or during flicker or during transition from negative to positive...

 Thanks in advance

Re: [Frameworks] Where to buy Lomo Tank

2012-02-17 Thread Christine Lucy Latimer

Hi Sedi. Lomo tanks are difficult to find at antique markets/ photo
stores with all of their necessary bits and pieces intact. I bought mine,
with all the bits (except for the spiral loader) in its original box off of
ebay. Right now I see two current ebay listings at fairly reasonable prices
(although the second one listed doesn't look as complete as the first):

Good luck!

 Thanks Stephanie,

Open Screenings are the BEST screenings!
And Millennium's have been more often and more enduring than anywhere
 else in the world! Bravo!
I showed one of my super 8 films there in 1977. Howard Guttenplan was
running it and he liked my film, which meant a lot to me. I didn't know him
then, I only knew that he must've seen a lot of films.

And Millennium's Open Screenings can show more film formats than most
other places can. Bravo again! Can you really show standard 8? That's not
 mentioned on Millennium's website.
 Good luck tonight!

Re: [Frameworks] caffenol processing with 16mm

2012-01-06 Thread Christine Lucy Latimer
The suggestion to use sodium carbonate (washing soda) is a good one. It's
MUCH more economical than vitamin C as an activator, blends faster with
coffee and therefore produces cleaner results on your film.

I've processed a great deal of film (motion and still) with caffeinol (my
most recent hi-con process was using expired, 12 year old 7378 from my
freezer, and it worked beautifully). If you don't object to lengthier
developing times, you can substitute the coffee in your caffeinol mix with
anything containing caffeic acid...such as black/green tea or red wine
(wine is obviously more expensive, but it's a great thing to try at least
once. Just as with coffee, the cheaper the wine, the better the developer.)

Carrie,

You can also get Arm Hammer Washing Soda at most grocery stores in the
US, usually near the laundry detergent.
