Re: [Frameworks] BOLEX EL circuit map

2019-09-03 Thread Colin Brant
Hi Luis,

Sorry to see this info is not turning up easily. Since it's been a little
while with no luck, I'll offer what I have. I have service manuals for
Bolex *H16-RX-SE* and *H16EBM* models (circuit diagrams included). As you
know the EBM is a motorized camera but I have no idea how similar to your
Bolex EL it might be. Contact me off list if you think one of these might
be helpful in some way.

There is a huge difference between "user" manuals and "service" manuals!

best,
cb

[Frameworks] Media Lab Coordinator Position

2019-06-24 Thread Colin Brant
Dear Frameworkers,

I am writing to quickly say that there is a great job opening (Media Lab
Coordinator) in UC Berkeley's Film Department for someone with experience
in equipment management, film production and post production, computer lab
and server maintenance, and in leading technical training workshops. There
is an emphasis on experimental/artistic engagement with media so please
apply or forward if this sounds like a good fit!

Search for job #27026 on the UCB careers page: careers.berkeley.edu

First review date was 6/20, but applications are still being accepted for a
little longer.

Hi Frameworks,

I know I've seen the ISCO 35-65mm lens mentioned on this list so I thought
I'd try asking this question here. Is there a way to get a replacement lens
element for this lens? I have one with a broken front element and I need to
either fix or replace it. If anyone has any insights into this it would be
greatly appreciated!

Re: [Frameworks] Kodachrome

2019-04-30 Thread Colin Brant
I would be curious to hear from anyone able to cast light on *why*
Kodachrome can't be processed as intended. After years of hearing the
simple "no" I'd be interested to know the more complicated, chemical
reason. Anybody?

*Ektachrome* -- as far as I know, the new formulation is only available in
the still 35mm and S8mm formats, while 16mm is still being promised for the
near future. But there is lots of old Ektachrome out there on ebay etc...

Re: [Frameworks] Kodak 7363 - exposing and developing

2018-04-24 Thread Colin Brant
Thank y'all for these responses!

Seth, that is a great resource to know about, thanks for sending the link!

Chris, I'm very curious about this idea that 7363 is "process to
completion"! Are you saying that when it is "done" it's done and any extra
time in the developer will not affect density? Just curious because I've
heard of that for Fix but never for developer. The Kodak tech sheet, in
regard to developer time, says "*develope to recommended control gamma*"
which is defined as 2.90 to 3.20.

Jason, my next tests are going to be at ASA 25... we'll see what happens : )

Thanks again!

Re: [Frameworks] Kodak 7363 - exposing and developing

2018-04-20 Thread Colin Brant
Thanks, Isaac!

I mix my own D19 from powder that I bought in bulk at the ratios outlined
in this recipe from Photographers Formulary
<http://stores.photoformulary.com/content/01-0035.pdf>. There it calls for
8.5 minutes in D19 @ 70°F, but doesn't specify a film stock or process
(e.g. reversal or neg). Seems too long to me, but curious what others have
found?

[Frameworks] Kodak 7363 - exposing and developing

2018-04-20 Thread Colin Brant
Dear Frameworks,

I am having trouble finding consensus on how to shoot and process Kodak's
now discontinued 7363 hi-con stock. I bought a bunch from the last run they
did (2015 I believe) and am now starting to shoot it. I know that there
have been threads that address this in the past (one even came up in a
google search) and that this issue, or similar ones, are touched on in
books like Kathryn Ramey's textbook -- but even so, I'm still left
wondering how to rate it, and how to leave it in developer.

My desire: shoot 7363 in daylight, develope in Lomo tank without push/pull
in D19 as B Neg.

In the first test I did, it was shot at 6ASA and developed for about 6min
and this resulted in a mostly overexposed negative. Also, I'm most familiar
with D19 so am not sure if there might be other equivalent developers
requiring the same timing that could give me an idea of where to begin.

Any insight y'all may have would be greatly appreciated!

Re: [Frameworks] vimeo alternative?

2018-03-20 Thread Colin Brant
I could be wrong, but with "Starter Plans" costing $15/month on frame.io,
this seems to be the complete opposite of what Jessica is looking for.
Anyone know of good alternatives to youtube and vimeo that are free, high
quality, AND, free of attention draining advertisements?

So far vimeo works for me, but my needs are pretty modest in terms of
length and file sizes. But I'd also be curious to know of other options for
myself and students.

Best,
Colin

Re: [Frameworks] Pageant AV 12 E6 sound problem

2017-02-24 Thread Colin Brant
Hi Scott,

I am not certain about that model, but on similar models there are several
(usually 2-3) soldered in fuses. They are not easily accesses and require
lifting the whole front panel and gearbox up out of the wooden shell. Then
they are located in the center rear of the projector. I have replaced one
of these to fix a problem with the main lamp, but without a wiring diagram
it's hard to know for sure about the sound lamp circuit.

Perhaps this is helpful?

Re: [Frameworks] Looking for a 16mm projector in Athens, Greece

2016-07-17 Thread Colin Brant
Hi Raha,

Some 16mm projectors allow for a range of AC currents. For instance the
Eiki EX3000, which is a small auto-feeding Xenon projector. Others like the
SSL-0 don't have voltage options, but can handle both 50 and 60Hz by
repositioning the main drive belt. In that case you could probably use an
external voltage converter like this one
.
In the case you are still looking to purchase/rent this may be helpful.

Best of luck,
cb

[Frameworks] Athena Projector

2016-06-16 Thread Colin Brant
To Frameworks,

Does anyone have experience with loop issues on the Athena Analyst
projector (very similar to a Kodak Pageant)?

I am trying to get one running properly for a gallery exhibition in the Bay
Area where the projector will be set to run at 6fps and will be turned on
and off by the attendant as viewers enter the space. Currently the bottom
loop gets lost after getting shut on and off about 3 times. Seems like
about 1 frame from the bottom gets lost and added to the top loop each
time. If you are interested to see more, follow this link
where I demonstrate the problem (password is
'loop'). All tips and suggestions are appreciated — thank you in advance!

Re: [Frameworks] 16 mm eiki hacked

Hi Xavi,

Thanks for sharing this. I am interested in doing a similar conversion, but
would also like to create variable frame rate control (which would probably
involve a brushless motor?). If possible, I'd be interested to see your
parts list for a better understanding this modification. Does the original
lamp housing fit back in place?

Thanks for posting!

I would recommend an attenuation box to cool down the speaker level signal.

This is a pretty cheap one that works:

Re: [Frameworks] Recording Skype

2015-09-16 Thread Colin Brant
Yes Chris you're right. One way to do it is with SoundFlower, which enables you
to route your system audio (ie. the audio information that would by default be
sent to the computer's speakers/headphone jack) directly into any other
application such as QuickTime. After the SoundFlower software is installed
you'll just have to setup your system setting and QuickTime inputs to match.

Hope this is helpful,
Colin

Re: [Frameworks] The Hand-Processing Chemistry Scheme.

2014-07-23 Thread Colin Brant
Hey Ben,

My two cents:

I usually use Recipes for Disaster (p. 53-55) as a basic guide for
processing times and procedure. Unless you have access to a G3 processing
tank (or equivalent) I find that I can do 60ft at a time in 5gal
buckets--if i am careful. Unless you are pushing the film in the first
developer, 2 gallons of D19 should get you through 400+ feet of film. So
for 3,000ft you'll need around 15gal of D19. Since it sounds like you'll be
in a newly setup darkroom and you can use a safe light for the Hi-Con
footage, I might suggest starting with that to get a good system down.

The bleach for reversal (R9 bleach) is not sold premixed anymore to my
knowledge, so you'll have to get some sulfuric acid and potassium
dichromate (see Recipes for Disaster or online search recipe and safety…).
This stuff will go a long way though; it expires about half as fast as D19
in my experience. I would say about 4-5 gallons for 1500ft of reversal, but
its not recommended to keep/store for very long (---it's most dangerous in
its evaporated state as airborne potassium dichromate dust = cancer:( so
when i'm done with a processing session i dump it.

Fix also last longer; I would get 4-5 gallons. Unless you are going to tint
the film, make sure it is a hardening fix solution.

Photographer's Formulary is good for premixed chemicals, also BnH has D19.
For ordering individual chemicals on the east coast, Artcraft Chemicals has
good prices, and product, but a weird website; they are in Albany and Mike
Jacobson is the person there that can answer any questions you have. I buy
all raw chems there to mix D19/D67, bleach, etc.

Hoping you are well and that this may have been helpful,

Colin
