[Frameworks] Sad news

2017-12-15 Thread Joan Hawkins
Dear friends,

I am very sorry to report that Chuck Kleinhans died Weds night or early
Thursday morning of a heart attack. I got an email from Julia this
morning— ironically while I was
in the moving image archive trying to arrange a screening for a film that
Julia had wanted to show here in Feb. I pulled out my phone to check the
running time
and up came a message from her titled “sad news.”

Julia's email address is jles...@uoregon.edu.

I'm sorry this is truncated and weirdly brief. I've been crying all day--
he was a wonderful man and this is just a terrible loss.

[Frameworks] textbook recommendation

2013-05-10 Thread Joan Hawkins
Dear Frameworkers,I'll be teaching a History of the American Avant-garde
class in the fall (there'll be 2 weeks of early cinema and then we'll move
quickly into the 1942-present period) -- and I would like to have a good
history to use as the basic text, to be supplemented with journal essays,
artist's essays etc. Is there a text you'd recommend, preferably one that
discusses some of the major critical responses to the films as well as the
films themselves?

The class will be offered to juniors and seniors, with very little
experimental film background or experience. There will be a production for
component for students who sign up for it (so students can take the history
course alone or take an experimental production course in conjunction with
my crit/hist class). Feel free to respond to me offlist.
Many thanks, Joan

[Frameworks] Recoder, Gibson, Block performance

2013-04-29 Thread Joan Hawkins
It's a little early to send out the announcement I know-- but if you're in
the area, please mark your calendars for Aug 30--
I've been e-mailing Sandra Gibson and Luis Recoder trying to arrange a
performance at the Indiana University Cinema and it looks like we have a
date-- Friday Aug 30. 6:30 p.m. (as part of Underground series) with a 3
p.m lecture. Olivia Block is coming to do sound. I'm very excited; I've
been just missing their performances for years. The cinema is located on
IU Campus; I'm attaching the link for both Gibson/Recoder/Block and the
Cinema below.
