Re: [Frameworks] Response to Gene Youngblood

2015-03-31 Thread Kelly Gallagher
Sasha, I appreciate your intelligent and helpful response bringing some
radical women filmmakers into the original post. Sometimes many people in
this space seem to get very stuck on notions of the canon which means that
important work like that of Sadie Benning and Hito Steyerl gets swiped
aside. As a young woman experimental filmmaker I appreciate your
challenging and provoking comments in your original post.
As a young woman experimental filmmaker I also stand fervently and
explicitly against sexist and patronizing comments, tone, and antagonizing.
I'm a little taken aback that more people haven't loudly and explicitly
critiqued the sexism and sexist patronizing/condescension that was thrown
at Sasha and I'm kind of surprised and disappointed. Frameworks will
continue to lose many radical and important filmmakers, thinkers, and
feminists, especially many young filmmakers, over deplorable vitriol such
as what's played out here in this incident.
In solidarity with Sasha, Kim, and all women filmmakers in experimental
spaces who demand to stop being condescended to.

As a quick update for others who may be interested- I've been messaged that
melted wax works. I've also just ordered some non-toxic, 5-free, organic
nail polish that I'll be testing in a few days with the bleach, to see if
it keeps the film emulsion. If folks are interested in how this goes, what
non-toxic brands work best, etc, please feel free to msg me!

Call for New Works: Fan the Flames of Discontent!
*Now! – A Journal for Urgent Praxis – calls for new creative work: **films,
writings, newly unimagined forms, made in rapid yet eloquent engagement
with the here and now of political and cultural life. We seek radical forms
expressing radical content, works that place an equal weight between formal
innovation and political urgency. As history unfolds, we need works that
rearrange the moment, giving us the space to see and think more clearly.
Now! is an organizing tool. Works will be published on this site as well as
put together for exhibitions and meetings. Above all else, we seek works
that fan the flames of discontent. We are neither idle nor observers. *

 Any suggestion?

As research for an article I am writing, I'm curious to learn more of

animated or collage works based on extant audio of speech (whether found or
 deliberately recorded).

Re: [Frameworks] Literature and experimental film

2013-09-27 Thread Kelly Gallagher
Exciting topic! As a handcrafted cinema maker myself, my mind immediately
goes to Jan Svankmajer. Many of his films are based off of literary tales
and stories. (From writers such as Lewis Carroll, Edgar Allen Poe, Horace
Walpole, etc). Ah, and then thinking of Poe, I think of about Jean
Epstein's Fall of the House of Usher.
Best of luck!
