[Frameworks] 8mm Film

2020-10-20 Thread Ken Paul Rosenthal
Hello Morgan,

Is it super 8 or regular 8mm? If it's super 8mm, what stock type, how old, and
how has it been stored?

Thank you, Ken

Re: [Frameworks] Luthor Price RIP

2020-06-20 Thread Ken Paul Rosenthal
When I was a San Francisco Cinematheque voluteer back in the early '90's, I
assisted Luthor in a performance called, 'Meat', at the Eye Gallery. I recall
it vividly:

A large white sheet separated Luthor from the audience. Luthor's hair was
frosted white like an old man and his face was covered in pasty whiteface. He
wore oversized, thick, dark glasses, a white lab coat, and rubber gloves. My
job was to run a video feed from his side of the curtain, which the audience
could watch on a monitor on the other side. He asked me to wear a lab coat as
well, even though I was not visible to anyone.

Luthor had an enormous side of beef on a table with a fist-size hole in it. He
repeatedly alternated between spraying aerosal into the beef hole and reaching
in as if to pull something out. His movement was very measured and disciplined.
On the audience side, liver was frying on a hot plate. The smell was rather
oppressive. Luthor was generous enough to let me snap photographs throughout
the entire performance.

Luthor walked with a pronounced limp due to being shot in (I believe)
Guatamala. This incident inspired the above performance.

[Frameworks] Seeking 2 Archival, Public Domain Images

2020-05-26 Thread Ken Paul Rosenthal
I've been scouring the internet and archival footage archives for two public
domain moving images for a grant sample. One is of a woman (ideally) devouring
food with abandon (about 15 seconds) and the other is of a beatnik poetry
reading or someone reading poetry (15 seconds). Such images in a contemporary
setting are not difficult to find, but older one are. Educational and social
hygiene films have the right tone.

Suggestions?

Hi Kate,

My film, Crooked Beauty, fits the bill for
everything you've listed, including the subject being a queer artist (though
that's not referred to in the film). The film embodies mental health struggles
through natural and urban landscapes. It's very provocative but also very
beautiful, transformative, and ultimately redemptive. More info
here. I've presented it
to audiences of all ages, including highschoolers, internationally. Please

2016-12-25 Thread Ken Paul Rosenthal
I'm grateful for this discussion, having just posted a similar inquiry on the
Doculink listserv several weeks ago. My takeaway from Doculink was to sell dvds
which include a downloadable file, or if one prefers, a streaming license with
is live within a given window. Having toured for three and a half years with
Crooked Beauty and my Mad Dance Mental Health Film Trilogy, selling dvds after
my screening discussions was a guaranteed--and relatively substantial--source
of revenue. Between touring, online sales to individuals, non-profits, and
academic institutions, I sold over 4000 dvds. However, now that I'm several
months away from completing my current project, Whisper Rapture, I'm not
looking forward to lugging around 200 dvds at at time, especially as I'm
imagining more lengthy tours than before. On the other hand, David's point
about having merch as a point of purchase sale at your show cannot be
underestimated.

As our lives and attendant tools and toys become increasingly virtual, there's
been a parallel resurgence come reclamation of 'slow culture' from food to
LP's. At the risk of sounding sentimental, I believe there will always be
something in the human animal that wants to touch something beautiful. I've
been carefully monitoring the merchandise for both musicians and fine artists
over the last couple of years and there appears to be a rise in beautiful
containers for the work with lots of extras--some material, some digital. For
my current project, I'm considering a balance of both. One year ago, I gave my
new, 33 year old housemate a dvd of my trilogy and to this day, she claims she
has not watched it because she doesn't have access to a player. (She also
admitted to me last month that she doesn't like watching films because it's
hard for her to sit still, but perhaps that's besides the point...) So why make
dvds if no one can (or is willing to) watch them? Fortunately, there is still a
substantial academic market for dvds, even as they're increasing purchasing
streaming licenses. But you need a lot of bandwith for a high quality steam
which is where working with a company helps. Here in San Francisco, the
Australian spawned academic streaming company, Kanopy has been streaming my
trilogy for the past two years. They are a top notch organization, although
their standard 50% cut of each sale still stings given that I received 100% of
my direct academic sales prior to working with them. Still, it's nice to
receive a quarterly paycheck as my dvds sales have trickled down to nothing
over the past two years, save the occasional screening.

Regarding Whisper Rapture, my current plan is to produce a limited amount of
blue rays for direct distribution to academic libraries or the odd consumer or
non-profit that prefers a disc. And the disc will include information for an
online download and/or streaming option. The specific platform for the latter
is to be determined. I'll certainly look into Penny Lane's platforms. As for
touring merch, I intend to sell some sort of beautiful paper based 'container'
for my film's streaming/download info. However, this container wil be a work of
art that the viewer of my film can physically take with them. Maybe they will
tack it up on their wall, maybe it will sit on a shelf, maybe it will be given
to someone as a gift. It will contain 'extra's' related to the film, perhaps a
study guide, or a booklet of 20 beautiful frame stills, etc. Liberated from
schleping dvds or shipping hundreds of units ahead to the next location on my
tour, I'll be able to carry much more merch in my baggage.

Ultimately, the key to determining the form and scope of your distro is knowing
who and where your audience is. As a mental health advocate, I'm deeply
committed to meeting my audience live at the grassroots level so point of
purchase sales are really really important. I'm striving towards a balance of
maintaining my integrity as a cinema artist who obsesses over every single
frame, and giving my audience access to 'content'. Watching Crooked Beauty for
free on Vimeo is hardly a cinematic experience, but most of the folks who watch
it are too hungry for it's message to concern themselves with stray pixels.
Having presented Crooked Beauty in person at well over 350 venues, I've
witnessed every conceivable kind of screening condition and not once has
someone complained about it being out of focus, grainy, oddly colored, or
having the wrong aspect ratio. Despite our best intentions, it's impossible to
cover every sort of viewer experience. I'm not suggesting that we completely
surrender to our increasing fragmented media landscape. But to try and offer a
range of distro possibilities and options and hold lightly to any of them
working perfectly--all this coming from a first class control freak!

In closing, I went to the cinema with a new friend a couple nights ago, who
confessed he prefers watching movies at home on his

Any list of experimental films on farming should begin and end with Hybrid by
Monteith McCollum. Hybrid embodies farming in style and content, and is one of
the most influential films on my own work, particularly in terms of rhythm and
sound. In fact, Monteith created the sound design for my film, Crooked Beauty.

Re: [Frameworks] Docs With Expressive Dramatizations

2016-08-30 Thread Ken Paul Rosenthal
Thanks to one and all for your suggestions. To clarify some questions/points
that were raised/made:

By 'expressive dramatizations', I did not intend to refer to 'docu-dramas', or
clips appropriated from fiction films as illustrations within documentaries. So
the question of where the clip or scene came from, while interesting, is not
relevant to what I'm seeking. Unfortunately, I don't have a good memory archive
of films, so the only example that came to mind in my initial request was, 'The
Act of Killing'. But I know there are innumerable other examples.

I recently saw a new doc on the life of Norman Lear, which featured 'flash back
dramatizations' of a child siting on a sound stage in a very sparsely
constructed home; a wall here or there, a suspended window, colored shadows, a
b/w motion picture projection of a memory, etc. This is the best memory I could
muster, but I didn't mention it because it's still not quite as expressive as I
had in mind. Rather than 're-staged', perhaps 'staged' would have been a good
descriptor. Or 'expressively staged'--yes, I think that works best for what I'm
looking for. Regardless, I've been compiling quite a list between Frameworks
and Doculink and when I find a couple good examples, I'll post them as
illustrations for what I'm seeking, and that might breed more suggestions.

While I'm very particular about word choices, and how their denotation and
connotation can be mediated by context, I typed 'docs' rather than
'documentaries' while writing my post simply as a matter of short hand while
typing. I'll leave it all if you'd like to bandy the differences between the
two. Or the implication that verite implies truth. All one need do is consult
the numerous interview in Scott MacDonald's brilliant compendium of interviews
on the intersection of avant garde and documentary genres for how the
documentaries have evolved in practice and by extension, definition. I also
adore Herzog's insistence that anything that moves the film towards a 'deeper
truth' is fair game, no matter how re/constructed.

Here's a really old, short essay I wrote--telling titled, 'Manipulations'--for
a program of experimental docs I curated back in 2001 in Singapore. I think the
basic principles still hold true so I'm linking it here for whatever relevance
to the discussion may be gleaned:
http://www.kenpaulrosenthal.com/manipulations.htm

[Frameworks] 2 Video Installation Questions

2016-06-20 Thread Ken Paul Rosenthal
1) For a wall mounted, flat monitor gallery installation, what is the most
efficient, low foot print means of bringing a looping digital video image to
the screen via a file rather than a dvd player? Also, recommendations for
particular types and models of monitors?

2) A hotel I'm consulting with wants to PROJECT a video image onto a wall. The
throw is about 12 feet with the projected image being about 5 or 6 feet across.
They do NOT wish to use a monitor. The projector will be permanently installed
on a raised platform and we'd like to keep the footprint as small as possible.
So do we use a very small dvd player or is there a way to play a looping
digital file through a projector? I'd also appreciate recommendations for small
projector models.

Please email me off list (in addition to on list for everyone else) as I'm
hoping to get some suggestions, particularly on question 2, by midday pacific
coast time.

My current project will likely be my last project on FCP 7. My Mac tower is

I'm seeking advice as to what additionally upgrades I can do to optimize my
tower for this project in terms of speed and safety, as I'm editing from a pool
of infinitely more images than any prior project--well over 2,500. My pool of
images and project files are backed up on two additional drives.I believe I'm
maxed out on RAM. Not looking for a comprehensive overhaul as I will likely
sell this computer after this project. Here's the specs:

OSX 10.6.8
Processor 2 x 2.66 Ghz
Dual Core Intel Xeon
Memory 66GB, 667 Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM

Is it … always an advantage to replace an indistinct picture by a sharp one?
Isn't the indistinct one often exactly what we need? (Ludwig Wittgenstein,
Philosophical Investigations)

In spite of technological advances striving for greater clarity and resolution,
visuals that counteract such perfection may never have been more appreciated.
Feature films, photography, documentaries, televisual images, music videos,
video
games, artists’ films and new digital media are currently saturated with
images that, in various ways, are blurred, noisy and non-transparent. They
invite us to see the world, yet at the same time, they obstruct our view, often
to dazzling effect. By operating
at the mercy of bodies and/or technologies that are unstable and liable to
fail, mediation is here rendered precarious. Such cases raise a host of
distinct but related questions such as:

• How can it be that the blurry image is often preferred over the sharp one?
Why is the indistinct image, as suggested by Wittgenstein, “often exactly what
we need”? What might we need such images for? How do they operate in various
domains,
media and genres? How can precarious mediation be deployed to rhetorical,
aesthetic and political effect? How does it potentially inscribe forms of
precarious existence – precarious life?

• How do the transformative repercussions of a digitalized media culture
intersect with the present surge in precarious mediation? How do analogue and
digital media materialities come forth in such cases, and how are relations
between authenticity,
 simulation and fakery played out?

• How is the presence of the camera itself inscribed through traces that point
back to its alleged mode of production and the circumstances of recording? How
might the embodied camera inscribe an ethics of the gaze, or trace attitudes
toward
danger and risk for the filming subject and those being filmed? Can the camera
take on a life of its own, be subject to terror, fear or death?

• How does the present surge in precarious mediation relate to more lasting
negotiations of blindness and insight, opacity and transparency, vagueness and
clarity, tactility and opticality, the visible and the invisible? How does it
relate
to tensions between embodied and disembodied modes of perception, suspensions
and prolongations of perception, to doubt, to concealment and to iconoclasm? If
pictures want something, do they now want to hurt themselves, to stage the life
and death of their
media materialities, to boost the lure of their ruinous decay?

The challenge for the delineation of a precarious aesthetics is to understand
the operational logics of precarious mediation, which is why we need to
interrogate this mediation historically, theoretically and philosophically.

We invite explorations of the questions above. These explorations may also
involve issues such as:

• Precarious art and the notion of precarious life

• Intersections of past and present

• Mediated memories and nostalgia

• Mourning and melancholia

• The medium as message

• Hot and cool media

• The attraction of ruinous media

• Perfect imperfection

• Poetic precision

• The enigmatic

• The sublime

• Medial and human error, finitude

• The dynamics between perfection and imperfection

• Contingency and chance

• Bootleg aesthetics

• “Poor images” and the tension between high and low resolution

• Medium-specific noise

• Noise in image and sound, glitch

• Intermedial tensions

• Temporal versus spatial disruptions of mediation

• An erotics of concealment and revelation, in image, sound, narrative

• The dynamic between transparency and opacity

• The dynamic between the disembodied and embodied camera gaze

• The dynamic between the omniscient and the situated camera gaze

• Uses of extra-diegetic versus diegetic cameras

• The camera as an actor that can live and die

• The appeal of chaos

• Epistemological and poetic vagueness

• Finitude, obsolescence

Beyond the conference in October selected papers will be invited to take part
in a special issue of the Journal of Visual Culture as well as an edited book.

[Frameworks] For Sale: 'Frame Master Pressure Plate for Super 8'

2014-07-29 Thread Ken Paul Rosenthal
The 'Frame Master' is a hard, highly polished chrome-plated piece of brass that
fits into the pressure plate of any Super 8 cassette. This precision formed
piece improves picture sharpness and steadiness both horizontally and
vertically. It also greatly reduces the likelihood of the Super 8 cassette's
plastic pressure window causing scratches on the base side of the film.

Andec Film in Germany sells this for 120 Euro, or US $161:
http://www.andecfilm.de/en/e_s8_pressureplate.htm

Mine is brand new, only used once, and I'm selling it for $75 shipping included

Re: [Frameworks] Film Festivals in General

2014-05-31 Thread Ken Paul Rosenthal
While volumes can be written on the logistical, psychological, bureaucratic,
nepotistic, and economic challenges and limitations of entering film festivals
in this day and age, I'd like to share one personal motivation and one anecdote.

I began entering festivals on the cusp of a time when sending in one's entry on
a 16mm reel was soon to be precluded by mini-dv tapes and DVDs. Given that my
lifelong singular vocational goal (since first grade!) was to teach, festival
entry and acceptance from the outset was all about beefing up my resume in
order to appear as a working artist. After a 10-year teaching career, I've
spent the last four as a touring artist-activist, endeavoring and enjoying far,
far more personal, professional, and monetary satisfaction than any number of
festival acceptances or appearances could ever offer me. In short, being one's
own 'traveling film festival' is evermore attractive in the face of competing
entries, the lack of accountability, and a host of other problematic issues
already broached on this forum that preclude the worthiness of entering
festivals.

All that said, I still enter festivals with a more pointed eye towards those
that thematically and historically support work of the nature I am entering,
again, largely with the intention to support my applications for grants,
residencies, and other related professional endeavors. Funny thing is, though
I'm making the strongest work of my career (as measured by critical and popular
response), my festival acceptance rate has shrunk considerably even as the
award rate has increased. Most alarming is that some festivals that have
traditionally accepted all of my earlier, less evolved work have full on
stopped accepting my more recent work.

As an example, one higher profile experimental fest didn't accept a piece that
I finished this past October. So for only the second time in my career, I
decided to followup with the festival. I received an exceedingly generous note
from the festival director saying they (I'm being gender neutral here) had
previewed 75 per cent of the entries but not mine, and would personally review
my film. Well, they fell over themselves with praise for my piece, so I asked
why it had not been accepted. Turns out that the other 25 per cent of entries
was farmed out to a group of non-filmmaking students to preview! The director
(whom I should point out was only in their second year as director) was aghast
and admitted to being in the process of turning things around for the better.
Furthermore, they pre-accepted my film for the following year.

Point is, this is a well-established festival in the experimental world. How
long had it been farming out previews to students, let alone non-filmmaking
ones?! Please don't ask me to name the festival. Some years back, I named
another even more reknowned fest in this forum that suddenly stopped showing my
work after screening almost all my early pieces, and my attempts to follow up
created a lot of unnecessarily bad blood between myself and the fest, resulting
in what appears to be an unrepairably burnt bridge.

Sorry for the long post, comrades. I've been trying to hold off sharing any of
my experience over the course of this thread as it the festival game as been
just that: a game with winners and losers, alas. But to conclude on an up note:
festivals at their heart are about collectively sharing and experiencing work
with our audiences. So as a working antidote for our festival entry blues, why
not conscious exploration of the wealth of possibilities for true independence
that are available to filmmakers today thanks to the relative merits of
technology and the internet. Personally, I have no interest in the internet as
a site for online festivals and screenings. But as a means of building
audiences, distribution and sales, and researching venues and institutions in
person screening presentations, the internet has been indispensable. There's
also a ton of micro cinemas and artist-curators out there--many of whom walk
the virtual hallowed halls of this forum--that program work in a more
thematically and interpersonally conscientious manner.

Cheers, Ken

[Frameworks] Such Suite Dreams: Week 3

2014-04-22 Thread Ken Paul Rosenthal

Hello Frameworkers,
As we enter week 3 of our Kickstarter campaign, I’d like to point out the
significant mental health component to our symphony of song and cinema, Whisper
Rapture: A Bonfire Madigan Suite.
In-between each song, we will hear Icarus Project collective founding member
Madigan Shive reading from her chapter in the groundbreaking anthology, ‘Live
Through This: On Creativity and Self-Destruction’. Her story of trauma and
transformation is the narrative core from which the music will emerge.
Like most of our prior work, Whisper Rapture is fundamentally a social justice
project that merges art, music, and mental health activism. Your support will
help us bring healing and hope to communities in need. No donation amount is
too small, and our thank you gifts are phenomenal!
