[Frameworks] Kinetics in Blue in The LAB Gallery, Dublin

2018-11-12 Thread Rouzbeh Rashidi
Kinetics in Blue in The LAB Gallery, Dublin

*Opening: Thursday 15 November, 6-8pmLive Performance: Thursday 15
November, 6-6.45pmExhibition run: 16 November 2018 - 12th January 2019 *

The LAB is
pleased to present *Kinetics in Blue
*
*,* new work by *Atoosa PourHosseini *.

In Ben Street's A History of Art in Four Colours (2018) he describes blue
as the colour of longing. Historically employed by landscape painters to
depict that which is out of reach, the sky, the distance, the edge of
visibility, it's origins in the semi precious stone lapis lazuli mined in
Afghanistan also ensured that it was at one time more valuable than gold.

Working through film and sculpture, Pour Hosseini took Derek Jarman's film
"Blue"(1993) as a starting point to further consider this sensory
relationship to colour and landscape, ideas of displacement and
immigration. In Jarman's work the narrator describes "Blue is more than
colour. It’s more than a mood, a sensation, or the frequency at which we
can see super-hot flame. It is a state of being. It “transcends the solemn
geography of human limits”.It can be as violent as red, as morose and
foreboding as black, or as pure as white.”

Pour Hosseini has developed a series of new works layered throughout the
LAB Gallery inviting the viewer to enter a landscape at once inviting and
out of reach reflecting experiences of a shifting sense of self when
displaced from a familiar landscape and thrust into a strangeness like the
character in new film, a hybrid woman/ bird of prey.

We are pleased to present a special live performance by Pour Hosseini and
her collaborator *Karen Power * on the
opening night.

The exhibition is supported by a project award from the *Arts Council Of
Ireland / An Chomhairle Ealaíon * and is
accompanied by a specially *commissioned text
*
by *Alice Butler* and *Daniel Fitzpatrick* are Co-Directors of *AEMI
*.

[Frameworks] Phantom Islands & Inside @ Festival de Cine Experimental de Bogotá

2018-05-12 Thread Rouzbeh Rashidi
Experimental Film Society (EFS) is thrilled to announce that two of its
recent features will be screened at one of its favourite festivals,
Cineautopsia / Festival de Cine Experimental de Bogotá in Colombia. The
inclusion of Phantom Islands (Rouzbeh Rashidi) and Inside (Vicky
Langan/Maximilian Le Cain) in the 2018 edition will make it the third year
running that EFS films have been shown at this wonderful festival. A visit
to Cineautopsia last year revealed it to be a model of friendliness,
professionalism and vision. 16th to 19th May.

[Frameworks] Phantom Islands & Inside @ ECRÃ Festival

2018-05-05 Thread Rouzbeh Rashidi
Two recent feature films from Experimental Film Society (EFS) will screen
as part of the Festival ECRÃ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this July. Phantom
Islands (Rouzbeh Rashidi) and Inside (Vicky Langan/MaximilianLeCain) are in
many ways complimentary films that mirror each other in several aspects.
Both are wordless, delving back into the origins of cinema to conjure
portraits of characters and couples immersed in psychic breakdown within
vividly rendered Irish landscapes. Both present extremely fragmented
narratives that blur inner and outer worlds, and are driven by intensely
atmospheric visuals and soundtracks. And both rely on boldly physical
performances that owe as much to performance art as to screen acting. ECRÃ
Festival is an experimental film festival that arose from the desire to
question the film industry and its “primordial elements” and to give space
for filmmakers to experiment freely in audiovisual production. It takes
place between July 17th and 22nd at the Cinemateca do MAM Rio, Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil.

Luminous Void: Experimental Film Society Documents

*Filmbase <http://filmbase.ie/>,* 2 Curved St, Temple Bar, Dublin 2.
experimentalfilmsociety.com <http://www.experimentalfilmsociety.com/>

Experimental Film Society <http://www.experimentalfilmsociety.com/> (EFS)
is pleased to announce the publication of *Luminous Void: Experimental Film
Society Documents*, a book chronicling the history of EFS. The book launch
will take place at Filmbase <http://filmbase.ie/>, Dublin, and feature a
special live performance by Vicky Langan
<http://www.vickylangan.com/>* & *Maximilian
Le Cain <https://maximilianlecain.com/>.

*EFS* is an international group of filmmakers dedicated to the creation of
personal, formally challenging cinema. Originally founded by Rouzbeh
Rashidi <http://rouzbehrashidi.com/>in Tehran, EFS has been based in
Dublin since 2004 where it has been responsible for injecting a new energy
into Irish alternative film. Its defiantly independent vision, both deeply
informed by film history and radically modern, has animated over five
hundred films as well as numerous performances, installations and sound
works.

*Luminous Void: Experimental Film Society Documents* chronicles this unique
chapter in contemporary underground cinema by compiling a series of essays,
interviews and manifestos that set out and explore the ideas that drive and
emerge from EFS filmmaking. It includes new texts by renowned film
critic Adrian
Martin <http://www.filmcritic.com.au/index.html>, and by *Alice Butler &
Daniel Fitzpatrick*, the curatorial team behind AEMI <http://aemi.ie/> (artists
and experimental moving image).

Vicky Langan <http://www.vickylangan.com/>* & *Maximilian Le Cain
<https://maximilianlecain.com/>’s longstanding filmmaking partnership has
recently expanded to include live performance collaborations. They
performed at the 2017 Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival and at
TULCA Festival of Visual Arts where their feature film *Inside* (2017)
premiered. Le Cain makes experimental films that explore a personal
relationship with cinema as a site of haunting, while Langan’s practice
operates across several overlapping fields. Her vulnerable, emotionally
charged work envelops audiences in an aura of dark intimacy.

*Copies of **Luminous Void: Experimental Film Society Documents (edited
by Rouzbeh Rashidi <http://rouzbehrashidi.com/>& Maximilian Le Cain
<https://maximilianlecain.com/>, 164 pages) will be on sale at the launch
priced €15, or can be ordered directly by emailing

[Frameworks] The Experimental Film Society Statement

2016-10-22 Thread Rouzbeh Rashidi
Very happy to announce that the most detailed and comprehensive Experimental
Film Society <http://www.experimentalfilmsociety.com/> statement is now
complete. It includes ideas, strategies, methods, and discussions of the
practical aspects of filmmaking and cinema that I have been developing and
contemplating from 2000 until the present. Every dimension of this
statement is born of personal experience accrued over years of making
films. I'd like to thank all of my colleagues at EFS without whose support
this project wouldn't have happened. Special thanks to Maximilian Le
Cain for his advisory role. This statement is a work in progress and will
be published in our upcoming book entitled The Luminous Void next year.
Hope you enjoy reading it!

brand new design by freelance web developer Ciarán Hickey, it covers every
aspect of EFS activity: news, events, projects, comprehensive member

where over forty feature and medium length films are available to stream or
download. The site also features links to our online journal EFS
Publications and to an archive of all past news. We have added a
subscription facility, so you can sign up for automatic updates on our
screening events, and a donate button for anyone wishing to help support
our creative activities. A big thank you to the amazing Ciarán Hickey for
his superb design and all the work he put into creating this site from
scratch.

[Frameworks] The Last of Deductive Frames

2012-01-22 Thread Rouzbeh Rashidi
The Last of Deductive Frames is a collaborative omnibus feature film
being made gradually over time by the members of Experimental Film Society.
It is a film that starts but never finishes. Each filmmaker will contribute
a ten minute section to it. These sections will be assembled in the order
in which they are completed. This constantly growing work will initially be
for the internet, but will eventually be presented on the big screen. The
only strict rule at the outset is that each segment must last exactly ten
minutes, although further rules might be added as the film develops. The
Last of Deductive Frames is a living cinematic organism designed to forget
its creators as it evolves.

The film cane be watched here:
